deciding when to not take someone seriously on political and social issues is something that’s lacking in our current marketplace of ideas

music, music videos, etc. seem fine but ol’ grimey’s world view is basically tumblr + skimming wikipedia articles

mh, Thursday, 3 June 2021 14:32 (five years ago)

I’ve been feeling like I woke up in the movie Idiocracy for a couple of years now.

Where is grimes content, that seems to be a twelve year old girl. (n.b. I have never knowingly seen or heard her speak before.)

I was born anxious, here's how to do it. (ledge), Thursday, 3 June 2021 15:08 (five years ago)

Why is there a Reebok logo on her nose?

Maybe they're sponsoring her on TikTok.

over a certain income/wealth level it should cost you 100k per published take on any social media format

Love it when a millionaire married to a billionaire lectures on "true equality".

Huh, she reminds me of anglo Montrealer girls I worked with in a call centre 20 years ago.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Thursday, 3 June 2021 16:46 (five years ago)

Grifter implies that she’s getting something out of this. She’s just dumb.

I know the boat story is old news but I can't ever shake it from my when Grimes comes up (cuz I live about a mile from where they "moored") and I love this detail from the Strib article where they talk about how you can't be Tom Sawyer anymore cuz the "man"

They got a copy of Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," which neither of them had read

no clue how much money she might have in the bank, but afaict she is not married

mh, Thursday, 3 June 2021 17:53 (five years ago)

Ok they aren't married, but are you suggesting she sees no financial benefit from her boyfriend and the father of her child being one of earth's richest people?

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 June 2021 17:57 (five years ago)

i feel like a lot of social media is this divide between serious self-proclaimed polymath intellectuals and ppl who are just vibing and both take issue w/grimes

mh, Thursday, 3 June 2021 17:58 (five years ago)

xp she undoubtedly does, but I don’t really know or care? making art that kind of played around with fashion/sci-fi/tumblr nerd themes is supposedly what led her to speak with EM to begin with. she was on the silly “vibing about ai” train before they ever met!

mh, Thursday, 3 June 2021 18:01 (five years ago)

Right, it's just that my feathers get ruffled when anyone with that much money lectures about "true equality". Even setting aside her partner's insane wealth hoarding and gross market manipulation, I can't imagine she's hurting for money.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 June 2021 18:07 (five years ago)

credibility meter’s hovering near zero on that topic for sure

mh, Thursday, 3 June 2021 18:08 (five years ago)

grimes views on pretty much everything are tone-deaf, unrelatable and irrelevant. she abandoned her community and her fans for money and power and she is hungry for more. send tweet.

— Ashley Obscura (@hologramrainbow) June 3, 2021

sean gramophone, Thursday, 3 June 2021 18:44 (five years ago)

was she really embedded in any community (honestly idk?) how does one abandon a parasocial relationship

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 3 June 2021 18:48 (five years ago)

I mean she was pretty embedded in the mtl arty pop scene for a few years (I was there!)

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Thursday, 3 June 2021 18:50 (five years ago)

yeah absolutely, she was a pretty big part of Artbutus Records which was (near?) the nucleus of a certain scene; Ashl*y above was connected to that

sean gramophone, Thursday, 3 June 2021 19:00 (five years ago)

very strange girl! (unf, i also think she might be one of those people for whom an accelerated hype-cycle is a bad thing. hope i'm wrong.)

surely it's one of the logical endpoints of the "fail early, fail often" philosophy to where you just forget the following steps and continue failing while suckering people into throwing money at you

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 June 2021 20:09 (five years ago)

Tbc the worst thing that can happen is something not being a vibe. A common criticism of the Great Leap Forward.

surely killing a vibe involves the destruction of a vibe and os therefore worse than a vibe that simply never was?

bogo jumbo junbi boba (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 3 June 2021 20:32 (five years ago)

Something about her parcours is becoming incredibly fascinating. I think no artist is aggregating so much of what is wrong with today's culture quite like her?

GUYS WAIT

HEAR ME OUT

WHAT IF

what if the vibe was the memories we were creating the entire time???????

This is a classic case of an interesting and valid idea worthy of serious discussion being discarded due to the very sloppy way in which it was expressed and presented, or perhaps that a young woman wearing face paint was presenting it, I don't know.

I've had similar thoughts to what Grimes expressed in her post for years. AI (if implemented correctly... this is a huge huge IF) is indeed the only way I see for humanity to actually have long term global equanimity and social stability that is protected from the inherent human failings of corruption, racism/xenophobia, short sighted greed, and vanity from wrecking all the things. And by AI I don't mean sentience, per se, but advanced tools that actually supersede and hold sway over the ruling class, long term ideally removing them from said class. Now how the ruling class will allow such a system is another thing. Perhaps an entity like the EU begins to incorporate some aspects over time. It certainly has institutional structures in place that could support such a concept, especially if it leads to the massive potential benefits. But dismissing the above "because it's Grimes" is as dumb as people are painting Grimes to be here.

corruption, racism/xenophobia, short sighted greed, and vanity from wrecking all the things

are these in fact all inherent human failings

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 4 June 2021 02:12 (five years ago)

i guess yeah destroying capitalism is probably more difficult than implementing ai

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 4 June 2021 02:13 (five years ago)

my day job is directly in the ai/agriculture sphere lol

mh, Friday, 4 June 2021 02:34 (five years ago)

The EU is not known for depriving the wealthy and elite of power.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Friday, 4 June 2021 02:37 (five years ago)

(also AI thus far has proved to be even more racist than humans)

Joe Bombin (milo z), Friday, 4 June 2021 02:38 (five years ago)

Good example Milo, AI is much more at risk of repeating or worse even amplifying said inherent human failings than doing the opposite. If we were able to create an ideal world, I beliebe we would have.

What people are dismissing is technologism as solution, and Grimes is sorta the ambassador of such ideology in the pop and art world.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 4 June 2021 02:43 (five years ago)

the thing is that grimes doesn't actually have anything particularly interesting to say there at all (and yes she presented it in a particularly stupid way). plenty has been written about how advances in automation could lead to a post-scarcity economy, including by marx himself, who viewed it as a key part of a communist society, but claiming that "AI is the fastest path to communism" is just poorly thought out tech-utopian nonsense from grimes. the level of automation required for post-scarcity communism wouldn't even need the sort of strong AI (like, greater-than-human intelligence that can just 'solve for abundance' and 'prevent corruption') that she's talking about anyway, and just improving automation technology isn't naturally going to lead to post-scarcity communism either, as marx argued.

i guess yeah destroying capitalism is probably more difficult than implementing ai

the sort of AI that grimes means is an absurdly difficult problem that is not going to happen within any of our lifetimes. destroying capitalism for socialism/communism, while very hard & unfortunately unlikely, still isn't that degree of impossible.
