does backbeat count for the covers poll? i assume yes
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:22 (five years ago)
not that i plan on voting for any of it lol
i am however definitely going to vote for "the temple" which is my favorite non-"miles iz dead" song on congregation
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:36 (five years ago)
Forgot about that, backbeat, I mean. How exactly is it relevant again?
― Blue Yoda No. 9 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:37 (five years ago)
Faded is great, Black Love is great overall, but its second half is really superb eh.
Also I agree with whoever was repping for Bonnie Brae upthread, it's gonna be high up on my list if I can find it a spot! Lockless too.
― Will (kruezer2), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:37 (five years ago)
Oh, GD provided vocals.
― Blue Yoda No. 9 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:38 (five years ago)
btw that frank ocean cover they did in 2012... is the best
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, May 26, 2021 2:02 PM (thirty-six minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink
better than the original (which i like) by a lot imo
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:38 (five years ago)
always enjoyed the cheekiness of putting "train in vain" drums under their cover of "lost in the supermarket"
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:39 (five years ago)
and then singing "stand by me" and "train in vain" over the outro
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:43 (five years ago)
Cool, never heard that before!
― Blue Yoda No. 9 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:51 (five years ago)
I mean didn't know they covered that song, never mind the other stuff.
― Blue Yoda No. 9 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:53 (five years ago)
also highly recommend their cover of tlc's "creep"
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:54 (five years ago)
Cool again, thanks again.Does anyone stan for "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic"?
― Blue Yoda No. 9 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 19:58 (five years ago)

my favorite thing about their "creep" is that it isn't a transformation like some of their other cover version, but actually a very reverent, faithful rendition
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 20:00 (five years ago)
he does quite like to sing one song's lyrics over another song's music
eg touch me i'm sick/i touch myself/let it all hang out or mother/dr jimmy/ holocaust/in the mouth a desert during live versions of 'you my flower'
― mookieproof, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 20:10 (five years ago)
does that all the time with his own songs too, mostly on opening tracks iirc
― building a hole (NickB), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 20:13 (five years ago)
one song that the whigs haven't covered but definitely should is neil young's "powderfinger"
― the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 20:26 (five years ago)
yeah if you really want
their wiki page says the whigs did cover "like a hurricane" live in the past but i can't find any recordings
their "lost in a supermarket" cover is certainly one of my favourites, it's one where i could make the case it's better than the original, and the original is one of my very favourite clash songs too
― ufo, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 20:55 (five years ago)
Backbeat soundtrack seems missing from streaming, although one can find the OCR of the musical version.

― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:26 (five years ago)
The “Creep” cover is pretty faithful but is infected with this slightly ambiguous, tense undercurrent which is something that Dulli does with his covers so well
― Master of Treacle, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:34 (five years ago)
It’s hidden on Zing, but MacZing still seems to have a bug, thought they were fixing it.

backbeat vmas performance is one of my favorite videos on youtube
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 May 2021 00:31 (five years ago)
There is something about this band that is like The Band. They have these funky little grooves that they work to death, never quite just playing a simple, um, backbeat. Also, hope I don't type everything in think in the polling thread and run out of things to say on the rollout.
― Blue Yoda No. 9 (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 27 May 2021 00:41 (five years ago)
I think Brad is onto something with "Oriole."

― mookieproof, Thursday, 27 May 2021 03:12 (five years ago)
"esta noche" is such a cool track, the way it starts out with that two note electric piano bit that continues through the entire song and that eventually becomes part of the wall of sound where you kinda feel it more than anything else, and that jazzy crescendo rules so much. interestingly kamasi washington plays on it, one of his earlier session gigs. i don't understand the live versions at all though, it's sped up ridiculously and completely loses the groove
― ufo, Thursday, 27 May 2021 06:43 (five years ago)
okay i would say best cover alongside Come See About Me has to be this one from the Beautiful Girls soundtrack... can't find the studio version on spotify but live version from the launch party:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAxIYG3bo0E
