best out of the current-ish crop of post-punk bands people and algorithms keep telling you to listen to

I've got a vague thought that Dry Cleaning's guitar remind me of early Suede in a weird way. I can't really articulate what it is, though (in part because I haven't actually heard Suede for ages) but something like ... there's a swagger to Dry Cleaning that could almost be missed in the deadpan-ness, the lyrics declaring "He's a dick".

Squid singer was a bit much

(Not sure that makes any sense or is remotely evidence based - but I like seeing how absorbed in playing Dry Cleaning bloke is).

Bummed that Lithics are opening for Idles but not until the first show after Dallas. I don't think I'll make it to Phoenix for an opener slot.

haven't heard the new stuff, but his old singing amused me because of how much it reminded me of larry blackmon of cameo

again, i say Flasher is kinda blowing it by not being in the middle of all this.

maybe we need a separate thread for, like, the "American post-punk band" thing from 3-5 years ago (Flasher, Omni, Protomartyr, Lithics, Priests) which somehow feels distinct from this weirder(?) Euro strain

also Tropical Fuck Storm is the best band on this list but probably shouldn't be on it, don't really have much in common

they are v different but they often show up on the same playlists, recommendations etc

TFS emerged from the ashes of a 20-year previous band, giving them something of a leg-up, but it's still kind of mad that Liddiard's able to make the wildest music of his life at the age he is

like i don't think they really succeed at what they seemed to be going for (a slightly jazzier gy!be? are people really getting excited about post-rock stuff in 2021?) but there's bits and pieces where you can hear some potential, but then his vocals are truly dreadful

the disconnect between ILM and RYM is quite funny sometimes. folks over there going ham over squid

I just found out about this album and came to post about it here, thinking it was some hidden treasure for all you weird postpunkzolofreaks. then I find out it's incredibly popular on RYM, #1 for the year with nearly 4000 ratings. I think it's good! vocals like some young Andy/young Colin fusion but I liked the early XTC and I've really dug this so far (I'm a couple songs in)

I loved them right away, have listened a lot this week. Perfect mix of energy and weirdness and annoying shouty vocals for me.

a friend described dry cleaning as "like the smiths with jo brand replacing morrissey" & i don't think he meant it as a putdown

they remind me a lot of Elastica, definitely nail the mannerisms and are good but it feels too professional, no weirdness of the original post punk

though the music doesn't remind me much of the Smiths, like at all

Have to say not loving the newest Crack Cloud as much as previous releases, and furthest away from "post-punk" influences they've gone probably. Always happens when angry young bands get more mature and subtle and leave behind some of that edge. Not all of it, and it def has moments. I've only listened to it once so really shouldn't be quick to judge. Still my favorite thing going these days mostly.

most def still post-punk though is Automatic, playing in NYC soon. Can't wait.
