my label keeps 82% of bandcamp revenue, including on bandcamp day, and the remaining 18% goes towards my debt i will never pay off :-)— Austra⁷ (@austratalks) July 20, 2021

I doubt Shields has the same deal.
Wouldn't this be a "signed digital rights over to a label" issue rather than a Bandcamp one per se?
― Noel Emits, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:05 (two years ago) link
Yeah that's what it reads like, or that it was built into the label deal from the start.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:07 (two years ago) link
Yes, bandcamp would have nothing to do with how the revenue is split up
She talks more about things here:
i released hirudin almost a year ago and it's streamed on spotify around 4 million times. based on a payout of $0.0038 per stream and taking into account my deal with my label, i've earned around $2662.38, all of which goes to my label debt, meaning i've pocketed $0.— Austra⁷ (@austratalks) July 20, 2021
― rob, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:08 (two years ago) link
So 20% is supposed to go to publishing? This shit is so confusing and everyone does it differently. I recently spent a lot of time looking into whether I should be getting any streaming revenue for a song that I produced for another artist, and in the end the answer I came up with is 'no', unless you specifically strike a deal that includes it. But since I do have half the publishing, it seems like I should be getting half of 20%, but I've never been able to make that happen.
― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:47 (two years ago) link
Yeah I'm aware it's not Bandcamp's fault, just interested in what a typical digital sales revenue split looks like for artists. Name and shame maybe.

Self-plug: Got two new releases out today on my label.
https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2784114773_10.jpg
Reels is a duo album by pianist Matthew Shipp and drummer Whit Dickey. They've been playing together off and on for over 30 years, in the David S. Ware Quartet, Shipp's own trio, and with saxophonist Ivo Perelman, but this is only their second duo session. It's beautiful. Get it.
https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3479908077_16.jpg
Echolocation is a collaboration between cornet player Graham Haynes and electronic musician Submerged. If you like early '00s Techno Animal or stuff on the Electric Ladyland and Macro Dub Infection compilations, or music on the WordSound label, you'll like this. Very heavy beats, piercing horn, warped sounds to dive into and swim around in. Get it.

Don't be shy--I know you're all buying plenty of music to support artists, but still--let me buy you one more album/ep!

only just now noticed that "The Time Has Come To Open Thy Heart/Wallet" popups are more frequent on some releases than others, I'm assuming this can be set by the label?

like, some never have it and some have it up all the time
or is it related to # of listens?

You can set how many free listens to give people, and to turn off the popup altogether if you like.

This is very odd.
I’m excited to announce that Bandcamp is joining Epic Games, who you may know as the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, and champions for a fair and open Internet.
Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.
Since our founding in 2008, we’ve been motivated by the pursuit of our mission, which is to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans. That simple idea has worked well, with payments to artists and labels closing in on $1 billion USD. And while over the years we’ve heard from other companies who wanted us to join them, we’ve always felt that doing so would only be exciting if they strongly believed in our mission, were aligned with our values, and not only wanted to see Bandcamp continue, but also wanted to provide the resources to bring a lot more benefit to the artists, labels, and fans who use the site. Epic ticks all those boxes. We share a vision of building the most open, artist-friendly ecosystem in the world, and together we’ll be able to create even more opportunities for artists to be compensated fairly for their work.
Whether you joined Bandcamp recently or have been with us since the beginning 14 years ago, thank you for being a part of this incredible community, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come!
