listened to the citizen a couple more times, I think what they're up to here is basically 75% ersatz revival of mid-aughts alt radio stuff(eg bloc party, franz, and especially early killers) with 25% modern emo signifiers - vocals sound quite a bit like manchester orchestra, occasional screaming, downcast lyrics. etc. what sets the best songs apart is the sheer shamelessness - "death dance approximately" in particular is so aggressively hooky that I sort of found it repellent at first!

speaking of shameless "show me something that you like and I'll write you something better" is a pretty good fake pete wentz like

lol forgot how brilliant "footloose cannonball brothers" is

i know i compared the album to johnny foreigner vs. everything upthread but it is also extremely is a real boy

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 16 April 2021 13:58 (five years ago)

very nice

I keep seeing the term "fifth wave emo", does it actually mean anything other than "new emo"

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 16 April 2021 13:59 (five years ago)

no

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 16 April 2021 14:08 (five years ago)

i haven't seen any evidence that suggests we've moved on from the "fourth wave" whatever that is

never heard of palette knife before but this song sounds good

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 16 April 2021 16:51 (five years ago)

I like their album title

manchester orchestra, origami angel and dawn richard all dropping on 04/30, incredible

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 16 April 2021 17:05 (five years ago)

I personally have no ska nostalgia so I have no use for this (clever as the new arrangements are) but some of you might!

this band doesn't really fit this thread but i'm hard pressed to think of a better one, plus everyone here should be into it. whole album is very good. riyl: charly bliss, specific members of boygenius... idk, it's occurring in that spot. full disclosure i'm dating the person who signed this band lol

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 20 April 2021 14:57 (five years ago)

so that's why you hardly post lmao

imago, Tuesday, 20 April 2021 14:59 (five years ago)

The Alternative posted this with a RIYL of Oso Oso, Fountains of Wayne and Macseal ... i punched a hole in my mouse clicking on it:

https://snowellet.bandcamp.com/album/suburban-indie-rock-star

It's not the best thing you'll hear today but it's pretty snappy indie-pop-rock.

Good track. So can somebody trace the growth of vocal processing in emo/pop-punk/etc? Feels like it's become more and more prominent, not just Autotune but feeding vocals through all kinds of effects. I don't mind it, I think it can be used well, I'm just unclear on when it really permeated these genres.

Like I love the way Fritz uses vocal fx on this track.

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Thursday, 29 April 2021 14:42 (five years ago)

for!!!! real!!!!!

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

it seems unfair that there's already a band called tiny moving parts because that's the perfect description of their sound

the samples are a riot

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:25 (five years ago)

gami gang assemble

here’s where the fun begins

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 30 April 2021 03:43 (five years ago)

first time listening to gami gang the whole way through since i got the promo... a true 2021 scene classic

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 30 April 2021 14:24 (five years ago)

it's so exhausting but in mostly a good way

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 30 April 2021 14:27 (five years ago)

album cured my adhd

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 30 April 2021 14:32 (five years ago)

we need way more goofy bands

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Friday, 30 April 2021 14:33 (five years ago)

Gami Gang album is great
but wtf is up w/ that cover

alpine static, Friday, 30 April 2021 17:43 (five years ago)

fuckin gami gang

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 22:05 (five years ago)

i LIKE THAT
you’re COOL AS SHIT
everybody else is fuckin LUDICROUS

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 22:06 (five years ago)

yeah ... this album is just awesome. those dudes are clearly just exploding with ideas, pretty much all of them good.

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 08:10 (five years ago)

I'm not sure it's actually better than Somewhere City which makes sense since apparently a bunch of this material predates it? but it clearly rules

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 12:47 (five years ago)

easily better imo tho both great records

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 12:50 (five years ago)

i too am surprised that i find the double album more consistent but every song is a hook factory

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 13:18 (five years ago)

the more juvenile lyrics keep me at arm's length but I recognize this is a Me Problem

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 13:23 (five years ago)

I'm real finicky about lyrics lately for some reason

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 13:24 (five years ago)

the juvenile lyrics are a pro for me because i am a grown-up child having a midlife crisis. every time that Taco Bell song comes i close my eyes and am back in my '91 Ford Taurus with my buddies after playing basketball all night.

alpine static, Wednesday, 5 May 2021 20:53 (five years ago)

maybe I'd feel differently if I ever had a pokemon phase

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 20:55 (five years ago)

ok gami gang is really fun, wildly overflowing with hooks & ideas

ufo, Friday, 7 May 2021 06:37 (five years ago)

no denying they are overflowing with ideas and ambition but I just have not been able to get into this yet. I liked the last one too but I think these lyrics are preventing me from really clicking with it. Going to keep trying.

alpine static, Monday, 17 May 2021 20:21 (five years ago)

Hеy, man
You tried your best today
And it wasn't all that great
But who really cares
No one
The answer is no one does
Nobody gives a fuck
It's sad but it's true

alpine static, Monday, 17 May 2021 23:00 (five years ago)

more screamo than anything but should work for this thread I think. from what i understand this will be their final release and is a re-working of past material but I really like this short and sweet energy bomb of an album
https://youthnovel.bandcamp.com/album/youth-novel

Guitarist Maya Chun is great as always. Apparently was involved in Serpent Column too which I love.

gman59, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 18:00 (five years ago)

I love that Youth Novel album
