rolling emo/pop-punk/the fireworks album is never coming out thread of 2021

listened to the citizen a couple more times, I think what they're up to here is basically 75% ersatz revival of mid-aughts alt radio stuff(eg bloc party, franz, and especially early killers) with 25% modern emo signifiers - vocals sound quite a bit like manchester orchestra, occasional screaming, downcast lyrics. etc. what sets the best songs apart is the sheer shamelessness - "death dance approximately" in particular is so aggressively hooky that I sort of found it repellent at first!

speaking of shameless "show me something that you like and I'll write you something better" is a pretty good fake pete wentz like

Good track. So can somebody trace the growth of vocal processing in emo/pop-punk/etc? Feels like it's become more and more prominent, not just Autotune but feeding vocals through all kinds of effects. I don't mind it, I think it can be used well, I'm just unclear on when it really permeated these genres.

the more juvenile lyrics keep me at arm's length but I recognize this is a Me Problem

I'm real finicky about lyrics lately for some reason

the juvenile lyrics are a pro for me because i am a grown-up child having a midlife crisis. every time that Taco Bell song comes i close my eyes and am back in my '91 Ford Taurus with my buddies after playing basketball all night.

no denying they are overflowing with ideas and ambition but I just have not been able to get into this yet. I liked the last one too but I think these lyrics are preventing me from really clicking with it. Going to keep trying.
