This video was my first exposure to Post punk band Dry Cleaning. Yep, they’ve got the formula down

the notion that for her merits she is even in the same ballpark as sue tompkins is grandly calumnous tbh

imago, Tuesday, 6 April 2021 23:04 (five years ago)

A lot of these bands I just find myself wishing I was listening to Art Brut instead.

Have you tried Yard Act? You won't know you're not listening to Art Brut instead.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 6 April 2021 23:59 (five years ago)

Ha, I just listened to a Yard Act song. I get what you mean. There's another band called Sports Team who do a similar thing. They almost had a number one album last year! I didn't realise just how many of these bands there were now.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:38 (five years ago)

I was told there are no more bands! and yet here there are so many, right in one thread

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 02:41 (five years ago)

Who will do the Landfill Post-Punk thinkpiece in six months?

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:03 (five years ago)

Ha, didn't see this poll previously, but Tropical Fuck Storm are totally a band that was recommended to me by a spotify algorithm and that I thought "Hey, these guys are pretty good!"

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 05:09 (five years ago)

That's because unlike most of the bands here, they do their own thing and don't sound like Ought

imago, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 08:56 (five years ago)

, who are themselves derivative and dull

imago, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 08:57 (five years ago)

Metz is a weird inclusion here? post-grungey band on subpop and their debut was 9 years ago...
I guess Ice Age fit the sound somewhat too, but again their debut was a decade ago.

Viagra Boys are a lot of fun live, but both live and on record i'm still just wishing it was some new Pissed Jeans

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 09:35 (five years ago)

That’s all of them. All the bands.

In on the killfile (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 13:25 (five years ago)

one local band I always thought was brilliant and never got its due was Brute Heart, but they were more i guess post punk in the slits/young marble giants way...but also very original they had their own sound, loved this band so much

was just going through a bunch of old records, Mother of Fire was great too

I don't mind Viagra Boys...but in 2021 I'm not listening to an album called "Welfare Jazz" by a band called "Viagra Boys"

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 13:52 (five years ago)

look buddy if I had to dodge all the bands with dumb names I wouldn't listen to anyone

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 14:07 (five years ago)

it's more welfare jazz that gives me a vibe I don't like

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 14:13 (five years ago)

I listened to a small clip of Dry Cleaning the other day and I remember suddenly wanting to listen to Animals That Swim?

otm

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 16:01 (five years ago)

it’s a good album though

flopson, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 21:59 (five years ago)

Like about 80% of the bands in this thread they are fine

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 22:18 (five years ago)

they’re in my top 2-3 (with tropical fuck storm and dry cleaning) in this list before a big drop. my fav music is like midwestern garage punk and pigfuck styles of obnoxious punk music with dumb band names and jocular humour though

flopson, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 22:59 (five years ago)

you ever listen to The Blind Shake?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 23:17 (five years ago)

ya! they’re great :) saw em around 2010 with michael yonkers

flopson, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 23:32 (five years ago)

it’s p funny that Viagra Boys are swedish . i had assumed australia

flopson, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 23:33 (five years ago)

yeah that period when they were working with yonkers was great

tho hope you get to see them without him, they were a lot more restrained w him obv

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:02 (five years ago)

like the nicest guys

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:03 (five years ago)

my top 4 would be the same as the results just in a different order

I also like Iceage and Metz. liked a couple of songs by Viagra Boys and Fat White Family but not really a fan of either. never heard any of the others.

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:03 (five years ago)

oh Amyl & The Sniffers are alright too but Simon forgot to actually include them as a poll option

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:07 (five years ago)

oh are they good?

the name made me think there were one of those retro sleaze l.a. punk kinda things

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:15 (five years ago)

I actually did listen to and consider them for this poll but they struck me as musically up to something less self-consciously arty than most of these bands

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:20 (five years ago)

I'm not sure I would say they were good, but they are alright. only heard a couple of things

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:48 (five years ago)

Just catching up on Dry Cleaning, this is nice

Dana Jel Pey (DJP), Thursday, 8 April 2021 13:55 (five years ago)

wow way to show off your pandemic privilege

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 April 2021 14:05 (five years ago)

also fun Australian sort-of-post-punk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j58V2vC9EPc

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 14:56 (five years ago)

it's the anti-"Slack Motherfucker"

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 14:57 (five years ago)

love their album from last year.

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Thursday, 8 April 2021 15:09 (five years ago)

I wouldn't have said either A&TS or The Chats were "post-punk". They're just... rock bands?

emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:41 (five years ago)

more violins in post punk!!
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown)

You know it!!

emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:42 (five years ago)

^^^ yes!

pomenitul, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:43 (five years ago)

yeah I only mentioned them because Simon did in the OP

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:43 (five years ago)

I'm fine with calling both bands punk but no, not post-punk by any definition I recognise

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:44 (five years ago)

I was going to say punk but then I'm not even sure that The Chats are that. But nah, I guess they are.

emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:46 (five years ago)

I guess The Chats are like the Sham 69 version of punk? That's okay by me.

emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:47 (five years ago)

The Chats are Australia's answer to HMHB

imago, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:48 (five years ago)

Last album a blast too yeah

imago, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:48 (five years ago)

They’re as post-punk as Idles, which is to say not much but they have elements (groove, MES sprechsang-y bits) that aren’t just ‘punk.’

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:49 (five years ago)

I would err toward the broad church when it comes to a genre that fundamentally just means ‘came after the first half of 1978 or so.’

Joe Bombin (milo z), Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:52 (five years ago)

Not knocking The Chats here (though I'm not into it enough to make it through a whole album, I still get 'Smoko' stuck in my head every now and again), just can't see a world in which they belong to the genre of post-punk, as elastic as that genre might be. It just feels like it doesn't suit either the music or their own intentions.

emil.y, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:55 (five years ago)

I also endorse Brute Heart, they were great.

I think “Welfare Jazz” was referring to some Swedish program to provide funding for musicians that was oriented towards classy/respectable styles of music.

JoeStork, Thursday, 8 April 2021 16:55 (five years ago)

love "smoko"

The Chats are basically a live band Sleaford Mods
