Kept waiting for Kevin to say that they’re taking a back to basics approach, just four musicians in a room trying to get back to the heart music

calstars, Thursday, 1 April 2021 16:05 (five years ago)

Lucky to snag analogue copies of both and that gorgeous You Made Me Realise tee.

The EP’s being unavailable on vinyl is definitely annoying

beamish13, Thursday, 1 April 2021 17:56 (five years ago)

still love the fact that re the 2012 reissues : lots of news re the 2cd edition of Loveless having a remastered edition of the digital and analogue version.
then they supposedly mixed up the labelling on the cds.
not that it was possible to tell any difference from what i can recall.

~ please tell me if i need to rip the other cd in my 2cd set (no idea which one i ripped at the time) and experience a massive difference ~

mark e, Thursday, 1 April 2021 19:13 (five years ago)

they mixed up the labeling and there was a digital error on the analog “what you want” it was a whole thing

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 April 2021 19:31 (five years ago)

to add to the confusion.. while the new deluxe versions of loveless and isn’t anything are claimed to be “fully analog” while the standard versions are from “hi res digital”, this doesn’t seem to be the case for mbv with the difference between the deluxe and the standard version being a different sleeve only, as far as i can tell from the description.

and don’t forget about the 2018 analog remasters including rejected pressings of isn’t anything as extras (at least that’s what i got, were there similar pressings of loveless?)

Ilx hive mind obsession with this band is puzzling. Sacred cows

calstars, Thursday, 1 April 2021 19:54 (five years ago)

summary : loving vinyl is hard work.

mark e, Thursday, 1 April 2021 19:56 (five years ago)

i will only be listening to a needledrop of the digitally mastered vinyl tyvm.

This album better be good.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 1 April 2021 19:57 (five years ago)

Still got no idea what the heck any of the remastered versions are supposed to be

PaulTMA, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:16 (five years ago)

wasn’t the album recorded digitally? I remember disc 2 of the loveless cd reissue was bounced down to analog tape or something

brimstead, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:17 (five years ago)

loveless I mean

brimstead, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:17 (five years ago)

ordered the deluxe vinyl of mbv just because the cover will be better.

akm, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:27 (five years ago)

xp Recorded analogue but originally assembled digitally and mastered to DAT?

The AAA cut was reassembled by splicing tapd, I think he even said he replayed a guitar layer on Soon?

So a new "high Res" digital master will be a new transfer and assembly from the analogue recordings.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:27 (five years ago)

"Ilx hive mind obsession with this band is puzzling"

you know ilx is not the only place where mbv is revered, surely

akm, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:27 (five years ago)

i revisited the catalog a few weeks ago and decided mbv from 1988-1991 is the best band i've ever heard, can't disagree with any reverence

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:30 (five years ago)

Decent band, I’d rate them 7.5/10, maybe 8 if I’m in the right mood.

pomenitul, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:30 (five years ago)

mbv are as close to genuinely unassailable as any rock group that i can think of

imago, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:32 (five years ago)

They’re too corny to qualify, but I am a faux ILXor so you can discard my opinion.

pomenitul, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:34 (five years ago)

ppl really swear by the 2018 pressing of loveless, even on this thread, i'm inclined to believe them, which is why i just attempted to order the deluxe loveless from a record store in belgium lol

looking forward to that order getting canceled

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:51 (five years ago)

mbv aren't corny at all imo, they're almost maddeningly vague and ungraspable

imago, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:53 (five years ago)

God, I wish. But I’ve already bitched about this countless times across several threads. I’m not going to rehash my gripes here, especially since I do like MBV (I don’t love them tho).

pomenitul, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:56 (five years ago)

It's sold out everywhere!!!

HuskerDoolittle, Thursday, 1 April 2021 21:59 (five years ago)

I suppose what makes the new digital source for Loveless worthwhile (and obviously ymbvmmv in that regard) is it will be truer to the original release than the analog cut and also closer to the recording than the original release.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 1 April 2021 22:01 (five years ago)

ymbvmmv

new album title

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 April 2021 22:01 (five years ago)

It's a fact of human biology that neither Kevin Shields nor anyone who heard Loveless in 1991 has hearing that can still distinguish any differences in these remasters

so tonight that I might ramona quimby (f. hazel), Thursday, 1 April 2021 22:06 (five years ago)

The intro to “only shallow” reminds me of Skippy the bush kangaroo

Mark G, Thursday, 1 April 2021 22:07 (five years ago)

ymmvbv

calstars, Thursday, 1 April 2021 22:13 (five years ago)

yes the guitar does sort of sound like that

Evan, Thursday, 1 April 2021 22:18 (five years ago)

The MBV store is also refusing to sell me anything but mbv. Fucking weird

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Friday, 2 April 2021 02:13 (five years ago)

ugh, pitchfork

But, to make things that much more complicated, listeners in North America still can’t hear You Made Me Realise or Feed Me With Your Kiss.

unless they have a CD player, own the original singles, or have access to Youtube or Soulseek. Otherwise, yes, impossible

The A-side, no relation to Deana Carter’s mid-’90s country smash of the same name

you don't say

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 2 April 2021 09:42 (five years ago)

deluxe Loveless seems to be back in stock at the webshop, don't sleep

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 2 April 2021 09:55 (five years ago)

and it wooooooooon't be looooooong

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 2 April 2021 10:01 (five years ago)

aaaand it's gone

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 2 April 2021 10:12 (five years ago)

Re that Pitchfork list; Slow is on Spotify as part of the ‘EPs’ compilation, at least in the UK. Must be missing for some reason in the States.

piscesx, Friday, 2 April 2021 10:35 (five years ago)

the EPs compilation isn't available on streaming in the States because of some issue with the rights to it being owned by Warner there according to the NYT article

ufo, Friday, 2 April 2021 10:58 (five years ago)

"unmatchable in its sonic brevity" (Domino hype.)

What? I guess when everything has been said all that's left is complete nonsense.

Sonic brevity.

Noel Emits, Friday, 2 April 2021 11:25 (five years ago)

XP ahh right yeah.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 2 April 2021 11:54 (five years ago)

Haha. Yes, that was my thought as well.

Noel Emits, Friday, 2 April 2021 12:03 (five years ago)

many xps--Speaking as an MBV stan, I have to admit that they are *definitely* kinda corny, especially on Isn't Anything. Some of those lyrics...yikes

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 2 April 2021 12:35 (five years ago)

which is especially funny considering how shields said he obsessed over the lyrics for loveless almost as much as the music because he didn't want them to be bad

ufo, Friday, 2 April 2021 12:46 (five years ago)

tbf the audible lyrics of loveless are not bad

clunkiest classic mbv lyric: "slow"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 2 April 2021 12:56 (five years ago)

I actually don't mind the (generic) lyrics all that much, they're barely intelligible anyway. It's the melodic contour of a song like 'Blown a Wish' that impels a kind of visceral disgust on my end. Maybe it's, uh, genetic – I've always hated twee-sounding music, even when I was a wee kid. Come to think of it, much of what I dislike about Loveless is of the same order as what I dislike about Pet Sounds, except MBV peddles quantifiably less of it and has those awesome geetars to make up for it.

pomenitul, Friday, 2 April 2021 13:08 (five years ago)

Loveless > Pet Sounds confirmed

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 2 April 2021 14:52 (five years ago)

I've never once heard any MBV lyrics stand out as distractingly weak or bad.

billstevejim, Friday, 2 April 2021 15:00 (five years ago)

I've never once heard any MBV lyrics stand out as distractingly weak or bad.

class project pat (m bison), Friday, 2 April 2021 15:01 (five years ago)

Right, I'm referring to the 15% of the time when one lyric or phrase is audible.

billstevejim, Friday, 2 April 2021 15:03 (five years ago)

I'm pretty sure the point was that they're supposed to be felt more than heard, not emphasized above the music as something that could potentially distract. None of their records had lyric sheets.
