Stevolende - that Dead compilation is fantastic, but I'm a huge fan of '73 and '74 Dead. Curious to know what you think of the 46 minute "Playing in the Band" on disc two.
I have the big box set from which that comp is pulled, it's all fantastic. My only complaint about the distilled compilation is that it misses one of my other favorite big jams from the box, the "Dark Star" from 6/24/73.

Not sure what of the recordings I already had. Do have a pretty massive folder of various Dead related stuff on a hard drive i no longer have connected to my computer. I don't think I quite had the same reaction to the other discs as i had to this disc1 but may have been what else I was doing at the time so may well revisit with some frequency. Probably just coincided with me wanting to lie in bed reading and therefore had the time to sink in this disc. PLus it is bloomin sublime.
I know I like 74 and & 73 Dead and have colours i experience in tandem with the years. I think 73 is a green and 74 a creamy yellow. Also noticing something that seems to bubble through 74 that isn't as prominent in 73. Not sure if taht would have anything to do with the amplification which I thought was the big new factor in 74. Though sounds like lesh has picked up new aspects of his technique.Like 72 too .& 68-70, not so much 71. THink they're less openly improvisatory that year.

Glad to see the Turman love, I didn't know his solo work at all until after I became obsessed with the Blizzard record he did with Dilloway, which is one of my favorites of the past 20 years or so.
Anyway, last night I had a dream that I got a drum lesson from him, and today he was mentioned on Rolling Jazz, so it was Sorey for the past while.

Haven't heard Chattaqua Suite in years but know it's right at the time Coleman was experimenting with instruments he didn't have training in.Which I think is mostly what he's playing on here. Trumpet and violin. Can't remember how that effects things.

i love chappaqua suite simply it's got moffet izenson trio action over the schΓΆnbergesque backdrops.i remember there being tpt & vn, but only got through disc 1 yest, which was trio & orch iircornette is always verging on cock a doodle do colonel bogey as per uje, but that leavens the proceedings somewhat

right was wondering if i was remembering the thing wrong. I just remember there being tpt & vn but Ornette is credited with sax on the 2 sites I've looked at since. Was wondering if i'd got a bonus disc in the double lp I had or something. Something contemporary but not of the s/trk

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/1d9aecd6811e9b7d6eb3069c1f5d8581/38466041973 set by great jazz vocalist. not quite sure what to call the jazz style on here or even if it is all one style.Band is 3 members of MIles Davis live band from teh time possibly 4 if Miles himself actually plays on this , I think he directs a bit. Dave Liebman, Mtume and drummer Al Foster plus 2 Japanese players.Very nice set anyway. Captured in a studio in japan hence the players on it including the Miles Davis band who happened to be playing live there at teh time.Would be so great if there was more music from thsi time. She had been separated from her husband Max Roach and wa sundergoing som eother personal issues. BUt voice is strong.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/e8855f543412a86cb5c00f27c9fac560/46387542nd lp by German group.Still has a bit of the Eastern tinge that is on the first s/t lp but a bit less than on that lp.So a bit more rocky, still pretty great just not as superlative as that first one.
