xposts: how is trouble? don't think i've heard any (non-live) dead c since patience, so that must be going on a decade of releases i need to catch up on.

― no lime tangier

it hits me just right, obviously more vibe/mood/sound than tunes at this late stage in their craft, but I dig it (I always preferred their lengthier, more meandering stuff). definitely worth a listen on Bandcamp.

2nd disc of this comprehensive set of teh 60s recordings . Pretty superlative. What a voice and nice accompaniment of things like fuzz guitar and stuff.
Some great songs too.
Do wonder how much of this turned up in beat etc covers and was thought to be innovative in the white bands arrangements. Cos it does sound like it should have been recognised as pretty new in teh originals.
NOt heard either other disc yet. So something to look forward to. Though Ugly Things review wasn't overly positive, hope that was just something deeply subjective.

Reunion lp by Brighton based indie group. I thing their Euphoria is awesome and so this is not quite up to those standards.
Have heard it a bit more than last week.I think its pretty good but Euphoria is a high bar to reach so not sure how much I'm going to play this.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/3ed8c27f7107ff5c7d9cf7a0b6fbc4ec/2827989
1971 lp by Wilson Pickett sees him backed by Muscle Shoals band. Which is odd because some of teh tracks on here verge on disco which is further odd since this is about 3 years or more before that sound really popularised.
Some of this is really really funky but some just seems to get into machine repetition or something. I don't get it, maaybe need to co0mpare with an original release of the lp or something
I have this as a 2cd with the lp before In Philadelphia where the producers are Gamble & Huff before their popularity really took off.
It has some really good bonus material on where Wilson appears to be revisiting his gospel roots turning some tracks into near spoken word sermon like.
I was intrigued by what other artists better known for earlier musical styles were doing at the turn of the 70s after hearing the Little Richard lp the Rill Thing and being reminded of teh Al Green Gets Next To You lp by a thread that appeared here. So wanted to check out Wilson and some of this si good and some of it I wish was better. The In Philadelphia lp is quite great.

Spirit of Love is quite good but I think that is much better. there's a live set from 72 circulating taht i think covers several of the songs from here too.
& it was apparently what lead richard Morton Jack to launch Sunbeam since Radioactive were refusing to treat the band with due respect, pay royalties and all the respectful things one tries to get done if one is legitimately reissuing an lp/cd. So RMJ launched the label and took care of things like that, but I think they remained under the same umbrealla group as Radioactive for a while.
THere has been some great stuff out on Sunbeam since then though and the Flashback! magazines were good in depth reads. Quite heavy for mailorder delivery though.

I saw this trio live on a link from the local University's feed the week before Paddy's day. Would have been something I would have been physicially atif there wasn't a pandemic on.
I found them quite transcendental in places. on the live set. I wasn't really aware of tehm beforehand and wasn't aware taht tehir studio releases were fro the 00ies . Anyway wound up ordering this off discogs while I was watching the live set. I think the lp is also really good, it's mainly trad stuff but I can hear some other things in there, at least one track reminded me of teh hot 5s of Stephane Grapelli fame and the accordian can touch o the hypnotic.
So very glad i got this cos it is pretty beautiful. I think there's at least one other lp by them taht I might look into getting.
So, good thing to stumble onto
Cathal Hayden, Máirtín O'Connor, Seamie O'Dowd is the name of teh 3 artists though i think they were arranged in a different order on the ad.

1970 Wilson pickett lp produced by gamble and Huff. Pretty great, hard r'n'b stuff a few years before teh producers really made their name.
I enjoy this a great deal.
Looking for more great stuff along these lines fro this time. Just been listening to a few different soul/r'n'r artists around thsi time reinventing themselves i good updated gritty r'n'b/soul styles and trying to find what the best of it is.
I may still be more associating sould with what people are doing mid 60s while I have heard some later stuff and funk and other things on teh same spectrum so really interested in this update/development of the sound.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/b76a605f04c436e0aedd09a82053ba78/1326607
teh demoes disc here. Which si rougher sounding than it possibly might be but does show teh band to be pretty dashed fine.
Post punky stuff with good sense of structure and tune and atmosphere and so on ans so forth.
Worth hearing, took me way too long to . Was reissued through cherry Red a few months ago.

Odd that they would load once and not again. I now have blank images there too but did see the images appear on my computer though it took a while.

brimstead, Wednesday, 24 March 2021 01:18 (five years ago)

Most nights since Covid I pick out three CDs I haven’t played in decades. Tonight, bands with horns.

The Velveteens - The Art of Compromise (2000)
“Ska” band from Virginia, obviously more influenced by Oingo Boingo than real ska. I saw them live for some reason I can no longer remember, and got drunk enough to buy their CD.

Weapon of Choice - Highperspice (1996)
P-Funk for the 90s. Saw them at Bumbershoot.

PIC - Hiphoppunkfunkmamboska (2000)
No recollection of this one at all, probably a promo I picked up and never listened to. Title is self-descriptive.

xposts: don't think i was aware of the radioactive/sunbeam connection. the quality of the latter's releases (that i've heard, anyway) are vastly superior & presumably more legit than the former. the second lp of outtakes/unreleased/single tracks on their mm&ttlotsh reissue maybe not essential, but makes a nice addition. spirit of love i still need to hear.
