This is the correct attitude imo. They nearly make or break a trad doom band for me.

I mean they do kinda tend to be pretty dominant in the mix for starters

I guess what I meant to say, after Gott Punch, is that trad doom activates my pure subjectivity centres even more than other metal subgenres. For instance, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is one of my favourite albums of all time, but I can't stand most of the band's discography due to Messiah Marcolin. It feels unfair somehow, but how I am supposed *not* to reel from his singing?

I'm liking the two GT songs well enough so far, but neither have knocked my block off like their last two albums did. I'm hopeful the rest of the album delivers.

Just now getting around to the Iotunn record that pom mentioned last month, really scratching an itch as far as progressive metal goes. Really hard to nail this kind of combination of epic scale space rock with actual death metal intensity, it's not just patching death vox over bog-standard prog metal.

Also finally received my copy of the new Ruins of Beverast, I really like how open and spacious that one is.

Speaking of prog metal, I've been seeing a couple people saying really good things about the new Chevelle record, of all things. Anyone brave enough to check that out? I don't think I've knowingly heard anything from them since their alt-rock radio songs around the turn of the century, but I've seen it being called very good TOOL inspired stuff.

I don't recall them from back in the day, and I can't tell whether this should make me more or less likely to check out their latest.

"Send the Pain Below" was their big hit, I don't recall ever hearing a full album by them but they were sold as kind of the "brainier" nu-metal band at one point.

I was initially disappointed by the major (complete?) reduction of 'death' in their death/doom sound vs the older releases that I've heard. but it's blossoming now that I'm over that.

I am really liking the new Emptiness. It's all a kind of dark ambient goth sound, not metal at all, but a natural evolution for them.

It makes me think of In Rainbows, for some reason.

Bits of it are genuinely beautiful, which is no mean feat. Even its running time is justified imo.

It's fine not to like this style. I'm guessing the hate is mostly a function of expectations. The same listeners probably wouldn’t go out of their way to rate a band that started as goth or post-punk and put out this album.

I think it's a fascinating turn, though. Very strange, subtle, and creepy. The whispery demonic vocals have even gotten kind of seductive.
