what is out there besides his s/t??

Kiptok, Saturday, 11 July 2009 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

the one they're talkin about is Backyard on (I think) Woodsist, it's pretty good

dmr, Saturday, 11 July 2009 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

Kiptok, there's a discography on his website: http://alexphelan.com/ducktails/index.html

I really like this stuff, but think I dig his Real Estate project even more: http://www.myspace.com/letsrockthebeach

Barnaby, Hardly, Sunday, 12 July 2009 11:59 (sixteen years ago)

I love Real Estate too, especially Beach Comber...
Also one of the rare myspace where the influences list makes some sens :

Paul Mccartney
Doobie Brothers
Kokomo
The Clean
The Boss
Julian Lynch

Sounds like Galaxie 500 meets Bo Hansson to me (not an insult at all.)

feelin' this, have yet to check out real estate

psychgawsple, Sunday, 12 July 2009 22:49 (sixteen years ago)

the new parasails is pretty good too. hey, does anyone feel like posting a copy of "dancing with the one you love?" mine doesn't work and i would be forever grateful

kamerad, Monday, 13 July 2009 03:18 (sixteen years ago)

i like the real estate singles. i also like that they were recorded at "yeah buddy HQ" in new brunswick, new jersey.

ian, Monday, 13 July 2009 03:22 (sixteen years ago)

real estate singles are nice, agreed.

MVC, i don't think they're available as downloads yet, but the underwater peoples 7"s come w/cds in them if that's any added attraction

pretzel walrus, Monday, 13 July 2009 03:33 (sixteen years ago)

Good live, especially when he stood up (w/solo).

ogmor, Monday, 13 July 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

A lot of this sounds like he's jamming directly over Thai music. Or sometimes like he just threw a bunch of distortion on some of that stuff. I'm not complaining. There was a period after I got back that it was the only kind of music I wanted to listen to. My friend got this CD that has 30 min songs where they just jam the fuck out on like one or 2 chords with electric 3 stringed guitars (forget their name). Sounds totally like it could have been made by jap or wburg noise kids.

Love the song titles. Sounds like a bro.

this stuff is pretty boring. what does it have going for it other than 'it reminds me of being 7 yrs old in the 80s bcuz the wooziness is like an overplayed cassette tape'

considering that every post in this thread is in praise of ducktails, what on earth is the point in coming just to talk shit? go and start a poll for the 17th greatest pop single of the 00s or something dude

i'm liking "parasails", i wouldn't normally seek out that split 7" but this is good stuff

lol u dont follow my posts at all do you
anywayz im not so sure whats wrong with asking someone to explain its appeal -- im not here to talk shit, im here to understand why ppl whose taste i follow i.e. max are repping for this when i think its pretty zzzz & im not sure what its doing thats so unique. i mean if were gonna go easy listening why not go all the way? this is a jam:

fleetwood (max), Monday, 31 August 2009 12:38 (sixteen years ago)

i don't see that liking sunlounger and ducktails is mutually exclusive, though. deej, if you don't like it, you don't like it. i'm not going to try and convince you of its endearing musical qualities. try smoking some weed.

cutty, Monday, 31 August 2009 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

fair enough if you don't like it but i dunno it just seemed like you stormed in, listened to half a youtube and decided to tell everyone it's boring in a snarky manner. my apologies if i caught the wrong end of the stick.

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Monday, 31 August 2009 13:21 (sixteen years ago)

anyway i'm not max or anything but i think it has lots of appeal beyond the lofi recording aspect, much like nite jewel, the tunes are top notch and would be great regardless of the recording context. i agree alot of stuff like this suffers by making the lofi aspect its only virtue, but at the same time "overplayed cassette" wooz and hiss is to me pretty refreshing after hearing so much immaculately produced music over the last few years

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Monday, 31 August 2009 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

nite jewel is pretty rad at least.

The song "Neptune City NJ" from Backyard has a mellow Terry Riley vibe to it. I like it.

so the ducktails dude also does real estate right? cuz the real estate album is really great. i haven't kept up much with in vogue beachcomber seaweed indie but i like this a lot. there are def songs that sound like the shins but i think it's got a very CCR quality about it imo, laid back, backwoods guitar strumming kinda thing

nog right (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)

Made a mix for my friends at the Bakery centered around the Real Estate "Fake Blues" 7" It also includes "Let's Rock the Beach" by Ducktails. They were listening to it today when I got my lunch!

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

"Dolphins..." seconded.

I missed this guy a few weeks back, too bad (saw Shoji Hano and Dean Roberts instead, which was worth it).

CharlieS, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 01:37 (sixteen years ago)

Man what has Dean Roberts been doin?

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

A few weeks ago he played a really good set with a drummer (not sure who) here in Auckland. Slow quiet improv, about what I expected his songless stuff would sound like (I'd only ever heard Be Mine Tonight). I think he's living in New Zealand again. No clue, aside from that.

CharlieS, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

Real Estate wouldn't sound out of place entertaining the evening beach crowd at the Myrtle Beach Holiday Inn. And I mean that as a compliment.

yeah, i'm talking about the s/t on woodsist, but half the songs are the same as some earlier "tour cd" i had downloaded ... not even rerecorded. i'm not complaining.

but then not saying anything about those allegations to anyone?

I'm honestly not sure if it's all that important to reach out to anyone except whoever was directly affected? Otherwise all you're doing is letting your fans know how correct and righteous you were to kick him out.

yeah i get not wanting to publicly shame someone (especially someone you were close with), but an abuser will often just keep abusing if there's not something specific put out there.

I've heard things over the years about MM but nothing specific, vague things about him being a 'creep' & a predator. Behavior that was completely at odds with the 'take it easy' 'killing the vibe' pose from him. Several years ago some friends played with Real Estate & walked in on MM doing a ton of coke right before Real Estate's set. 'Duckrails' is a name I've heard often.

"Creepy" seems like an imprecise term for people who are alleged to have assaulted people. I guess this is just what people say when they don't want to give details.

Treeship, Saturday, 14 October 2017 06:00 (eight years ago)

oh i didn't mean to imply i didn't know details. it was an open secret for at least the last... wanna say 2 years?

flopson, Saturday, 14 October 2017 06:28 (eight years ago)

I remember hearing this about Matt Mondanile some time ago... like 2009, 2010? It was after a tour in Australia. And then another independent account a few years later...

Calling someone out over their Twitter likes is a bit unfair though as I know a lot of people who use it as a bookmarking system rather than for agreeing with a Tweet's sentiment.

Not saying that's the case here but there's been plenty of threads about it in the last week now that other user's likes are showing up in people's feeds.

groovypanda, Friday, 26 January 2018 08:09 (eight years ago)

It's shite tbh and we should bh

i,CloudiOS (darraghmac), Friday, 26 January 2018 12:52 (eight years ago)

I mean, he admits he is an “abuser” in that facebook statement and kind of pleads for a second chance. He apologizes to Julia Holter. Maybe it’s not sincere — I wouldn’t want my female friends going near him — but it seems like a weird opportunity to pile on again. More people know Matt Mondanile is a predator than can name even one Ducktails song—he’s done.

treeship 2, Friday, 26 January 2018 13:32 (eight years ago)

It is a very self-pitying post, I’ll admit. But he’s trash—it shouldn’t be surprising.
