he definitely has some ticks, but initially I liked his singing because it didn't fall into the standard indie rock modes.
― tylerw, Thursday, 18 February 2021 21:32 (three years ago) link
For me it's literally just that one thing. Once I notice it it's all I hear!
― Evan, Thursday, 18 February 2021 22:57 (three years ago) link
I love Jansch's vocals!
But I also get that they aren't traditionally what you'd consider great esp when contrasted with his playing
― Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:01 (three years ago) link
I don't dislike either Jansch or Walker's vox, they do the job just fine for me, I just wouldn't ever say wow these guys are great singers
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:09 (three years ago) link
Walter's singing can be annoying because of the si-hi-hinging style. I don't understand why we need to compare him to Jansch.
― Duke, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:25 (three years ago) link
If anything Jansch can be oddly annoying because he breathes loudly through his nose while playing
― Duke, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:26 (three years ago) link
― Duke, Friday, 19 February 2021 00:25
I mean *Walker's* of course. Autocorrect

singing on ‘rang dizzy’ is lovely imho
― flopson, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:48 (three years ago) link
New one is great — maybe his best? Very gastr del sol
― tylerw, Sunday, 14 February 2021 17:26 (five days ago) bookmarkflaglink
Apparently he's been playing with David Grubbs for a while now and they have a duo recording coming out soon
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 19 February 2021 00:36 (three years ago) link
Little Common Twist with Charles Rumback is fantastic

The Kikagaku Moyo collab reminds me of La Novia, minus throatsinging. At least until it turns into Gottsching territory.

the soul patch in the reaction video really brings it home
― adam, Monday, 8 March 2021 16:21 (three years ago) link
I don't mind Ryley leaning into comedy now that he's sober. Also thought it was funny that I pre-ordered his new one on CD Thursday and got a shipping notification within an hour.

same thing with the Kikagaku Moyo record I bought - he's on top of things!
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 March 2021 17:10 (three years ago) link
I mean, I'm assuming in this case the shipping notification is just the label being printed/created, just never seen it move that quickly. And it's already out for delivery today!
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 March 2021 17:12 (three years ago) link
He's always been great at playing characters (has great instincts). Wonder if he's ever done improve or considered it.
― Evan, Monday, 8 March 2021 17:23 (three years ago) link
half the times i've seen him there have practically been ten minutes of standup material during the set
― global tetrahedron, Monday, 8 March 2021 17:37 (three years ago) link
lol i love that he keeps trying to get his mind around 4/4

just found out he plays psych guitar on the Spiral Galaxy record with Plastic Crimewave folks etc.

Oh wow, I didn't know that either! I've been meaning to check that one out, I'll bump that higher on my list. Thanks.

Yeah, this new is fantastic.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:00 (three years ago) link
"new one", that should have been. Really great and probably my favorite thing he's done yet.
― soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:01 (three years ago) link
It's wonderful in every way except for the songs themselves, which haven't reeled me in at all, save for the closer, 'Shiva with Dustpan', which finally rises to the level of 'memorable'. It's probably just me, though.

Great album, very Jim O’Rouke
― akm, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 04:48 (three years ago) link
where are yall hearing this? my bandcamp library still says "pre-order"
the kikagaku moyo collab is a burner and it's like the heaviest vinyl record i own, 1800g lp
― adam, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 14:57 (three years ago) link
xxpost i haven't heard the new one, but your experience lines up w/ mine, generally speaking ... for years now. i love everything about Ryley but i've just never been able to really latch on to his vocal melodies.
― alpine static, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 17:25 (three years ago) link
just from the singles this sounds pretty damn good
― intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 17 March 2021 17:48 (three years ago) link
his vocal melodies
Yeah, that's the main sticking point for me as well. I assume this is why I loved the (instrumental) Kikagaku Moyo collab so much.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 19:01 (three years ago) link
Yeah I still haven't gotten the digital version, but my CD copy showed up like two days after I placed the pre-order. Was definitely not expecting that to be the case.

This week I’m two years sober off dope, coke, and booze. Still don’t have the key to happiness or all the answers. Just know it’s 100% possible to live without picking up. Nothing comes before sobriety. Couldn’t have done it alone. Asked sober people what they did and listened.— Ryley walker (@ryleywalker) March 21, 2021

I love Ryley but I get a headache from this record! Really bums me out :(
― black dice live ft. jerry garcia (rizzx), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 10:32 (three years ago) link
first one i've heard and really enjoyed it. the Jim O'Rourke vibes are very strong, but so few people do anything in that style and where Jim doesn't do song records that often, i'm totally fine with it.
― Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 7 April 2021 10:45 (three years ago) link
Dude's on a roll. His new record with David Grubbs is exceptional! Started out kinda like I would have expected, but gets really weird and out fairly quickly.

I'm really enjoying this new(ish) one. It's grown on me. His vocal has for the most part lost the si-hi-hi-nging style of the last record. Maybe I should give that one another go.

Clad With Bunk ends with a guitar riff like Drag Racer by the Doug Wood Band. Known to older UK listners ad the theme to the snooker.

Any ilxors who have ordered the new Post Wook from his bandcamp received theirs yet? According to the bandcamp email I should have had it a few weeks ago, but nothing yet. It still says "ships out within 5 days" and no notices about any delays, so it doesn't seem to indicate any delays.
― a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 5 January 2022 14:50 (two years ago) link
I haven't ordered it yet but my previous experience was ordering the Ryley/Kikagaku Moyo album and it shipped out almost immediately so it might be worth emailing just to make sure it didn't fall through the cracks
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 5 January 2022 14:54 (two years ago) link
yeah, i'd just email — ryley is pretty responsive, I've found. cool record! he might even have done it a bit of a disservice with the jokey title, haha.
― tylerw, Wednesday, 5 January 2022 15:16 (two years ago) link
Yeah, I'll do that. I dunno, I kind of love when he gets all goofy. Kicking myself for missing that Steve Gunn drone tape.

it's kind of cool to read the thread title: Ryley Walker (Jansch-style vocals, finger-picking folk guitar with double bass and violins grooves)
and realize how much he's changed and evolved, that doesn't even come close to describing him now
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 5 January 2022 19:07 (two years ago) link
i guess if you were going to find a good comparison, it'd be john martyn — which means Ryley is about to make his One World?
― tylerw, Wednesday, 5 January 2022 22:08 (two years ago) link
I wouldn't hate that.

had the pleasure of seeing Ryley live with his band, absolute beast of a bass player Andrew Scott Young and two(!) drummers
he seems so effortless in his playing

ryley walker is hella good. i had no idea...

Post Wook is really great. Have been dipping into his back catalog stuff I haven't heard and it's so diverse. He has a really creative and ambitious musical mind, that takes him in pretty different directions from a lot of his brethren in the post-Faheyverse. Going back to his older stylez search also SpiderBeetleBee w Bill MacKay

playing bass last night with the Moles. been a while, good to see him. and yes, he was having a good time up there.
Moles warming up for a GBV opening spot they have coming up, Ryley also has a show with Tara Jane O'Neil in April, as the TJO Duo.
