i mean, stakes is high the title track had an amazing beat (also just the best song on there IIRC). the rest though, it was a bit weak.

candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:16 (five years ago)

the internet made a man out of pussies from around my way who usually wouldn't have a fucking thing to say.

classic, obvs.

stakes is high is one of my favorite albums by the beloved hip hop band de la soul
they are rappers

i forgot about 4more and big brother beat.

candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:50 (five years ago)

'This is like the hiphop fan version of "my best friend is black!!"'

The other reason this is wrong is that buhloone mind state is totally unlike the first two albums. It's much more sober, less chaotic, and has none of the earlier playfulness.

candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:56 (five years ago)

It’s also fantastic, as is The Grind Date

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Monday, 15 February 2021 20:06 (five years ago)

buhloone is my favourite

the first four are perfect, and i like a lot of the AOI records too. Much More! Shopping Bags!

not at all playful

THERE IS NO R N B IN THIS SONG

Ray Cooney as "Crotch" (stevie), Monday, 15 February 2021 20:09 (five years ago)

They should have just continued doing goofy, silly songs like “My Brother’s a Bashead” and “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa”

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Monday, 15 February 2021 20:15 (five years ago)

I can't decide between Buhloone and Art Official Intelligence: Bionix

I enjoy the 1993 album "Buhloone Mind State" from the all-time great rap band De La Soul.
I also enjoy the 2001 album "Art Official Intelligence: Bionix" from the excellent rap band De La Soul.
These album, along with most of their albums, are very good albums.
Thanks for your time!

the all-time great rap band De La Soul

yes.

the excellent rap band De La Soul

also yes.

Yeah, Art Official Intelligence: Bionix was surprisingly good - Mosaic Thump didn't feel like much past a few good singles, so I wasn't sure if they had it in them to make an album like that. The first three, Stakes Is High and Bionix are all excellent-to-great.

i always forget how good Held Down is

i thought mosaic thump was disappointing at the time. it's okay, i guess. bionix was a clear and obvious return to form.

even though it was an obvious attempt to get on the radio, i liked "shoomp" a lot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9tEhwnr2qs

shame they didn't end up including it on the grind date. i thought it continued the feel good vibe of bionix perfectly.

"They should have just continued doing goofy, silly songs like “My Brother’s a Bashead” and “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa”"

The thing is, buhloone is musically much more of a cynical or at least deflated record than the earlier two, even DLSID. Doesnt take a PhD in hip hop to see that.

candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 21:11 (five years ago)

More than that though, I think its the album they really sounded like mature adults.

candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 21:14 (five years ago)

what d'you know about music, hamster penis?

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 15 February 2021 21:23 (five years ago)

I've forgotten more than you'll ever know buttcrust

candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 21:27 (five years ago)

you're starting to sound just like mc shan.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 15 February 2021 21:42 (five years ago)

how does BM sound "cynical"?

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 February 2021 22:08 (five years ago)

for real, that's legitimately ridiculous. it's not.

nothing de la ever did could be considered truly "cynical." not after de la soul is dead.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 15 February 2021 22:18 (five years ago)

I feel like cynical is a word people use about music when they want to criticize something but don't really have anything concrete

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 15 February 2021 22:57 (five years ago)

hella cynical of you to say that

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 February 2021 22:59 (five years ago)

Cynicism is curdled sentimentality: a bitterness that the world didn't turn out the way you expected.

Buhloone Mindstate is cynical?

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 February 2021 23:03 (five years ago)

My name is Cynical, I be 4'11"

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 00:08 (five years ago)

I like some of De La's stuff but their voices have always been the biggest stumbling block for me

Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 01:19 (five years ago)

Sometimes ppl say something is “cynical,” when what they mean is that they have a cynical view of the motives behind it. This can be confusing

babe for the weekend (morrisp), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 01:23 (five years ago)

wtf wrong with their voices lol

Buhloone Mindstate is not cynical - if they sound angry or downbeat in places it's because they care, not because they don't

Ray Cooney as "Crotch" (stevie), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 07:30 (five years ago)

yeah this voices thing is weird, I have no idea what that is about

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 13:16 (five years ago)

also I really perplexed by this one

Halfway there but for you at 11:15 15 Feb 21

Someone once said that De La Soul were the first rappers whose beats were more important than their words and voices. Is this a controversial take

most people's first exposure to them was Me, Myself or if you were more into hip hop "Potholes in My Lawn", in both cases their lyrical style, lyrics, the whole boho vibe was super important

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 13:18 (five years ago)

yeah like i said upthread Candyman just needed to stop with the lame takes in this thread

(•̪●) (carne asada), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 13:27 (five years ago)

candyman's takes in this revive make me feel like we are listening to two different things.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 15:45 (five years ago)

"i always forget how good Held Down is"

YES

Pos and Dave both have unmistakable voices, and the low-key-ness is part of the appeal, not a lack

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 16:12 (five years ago)

it's a bummer, De La being essentially missing from streaming has really affected their historical profile

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 17:13 (five years ago)

^^ yup

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 17:15 (five years ago)

Chris Rock jokes that he still buys CD's because if someone "takes down the cloud, I'll still have Luther!"

I guess that's me with De La Soul, except they never were on "the cloud."

birdistheword, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 17:49 (five years ago)

lol i said this awhile back and whiney flipped out at me

anyway de la soul are incredible, cant think of a candyman contribution to a thread ive appreciated yet...

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 18:51 (five years ago)

I've read some of your reviews and could say the same.

candyman, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 09:49 (five years ago)

Also arent you the guy who said hip hop is jazz? Lol.

candyman, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 10:10 (five years ago)

arms too short to box with god ^^^

Ray Cooney as "Crotch" (stevie), Wednesday, 17 February 2021 10:46 (five years ago)

^^^lyrical references too hackneyed to really zing

you guys can pile on me, i dont mind, glad to help with the community bonding on this site, and i'll admit sure my buhloone reading is a bit off (was going on memory really, and a song like i am i be) but i stand by the notion that they have boring voices. i get that saying such a revered group has 'boring' voices might irk when worded in that way (low key might have been fairer) but compared to rap voices like say (and im only using others from the same era to be fair), q tip, kool keith, wu-tang, snoop, souls of mischief, del, de la are hardly the most interesting vocal characters. id say the same about gza, mos def and plenty other rappers who still make good songs and good albums.
