I think Deafman Glance is where he started really leaning into the Chicago post-rock vibe and is one of the best rock records of the last few years. It's so damn TASTY

J. Sam, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:00 (five years ago)

i love all his stuff. rang dizzy is great, excited for new album

flopson, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:35 (five years ago)

i love the album but if you put ‘primrose green’ on for someone who hadn’t heard him before there’s no way they would guess it was from the current century lol

flopson, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:36 (five years ago)

the bill mackay collab is really great

global tetrahedron, Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:37 (five years ago)

I feel like it's worth noting that RW is a huge Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 fan, speaking of 90s post-rock influences

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Sunday, 14 February 2021 18:53 (five years ago)

he did a collaboration with Bill MacKay that I never heard, maybe tyler did

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, February 14, 2021 12:49 PM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

He did twice actually! Of the two I'm more familiar with Land of Plenty and I return to it ALL the time.

Evan, Sunday, 14 February 2021 19:12 (five years ago)

love the dave matthews record. love the thinking fellers t shirt. love the leonard cohen trolling.

i only liked about half of "golden songs" but that aside dude has an impressive hit rate

adam, Sunday, 14 February 2021 19:40 (five years ago)

Ooo do you have a promo? I'm looking forward to him stepping up the prog on this one given how much he's been raving about Genesis for the past couple years

yeah there's definitely a genesis-y flavor at times ...

tylerw, Sunday, 14 February 2021 19:51 (five years ago)

He's been a really interesting guy to follow for the last 6-7 years. The first time I saw him it felt like more a sum-of-influences, though super talented and energetic. But by 2nd time he was much more sounding like his own thing, and the 3rd time a couple years ago he was, as they say, really on his shit. I loved that album, Deafman Glance. Looking forward to the new one. And need to check out the Kikagaku Moyo too.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 14 February 2021 21:38 (five years ago)

Hmmmm. I really struggled with Deafman Glance... maybe I should revisit.

I have one Mackey collab that I enjoy. He was great live. I'll definitely check out this new one.

Duke, Sunday, 14 February 2021 22:26 (five years ago)

Looking forward to this one, he’s been in a roll for the past few years. I do like that he’s turning into a full-on Chicago post-rock dude only after moving to NYC.

Little Common Twist with Charles Rumback is fantastic

corrs unplugged, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 14:36 (five years ago)

yeah thats the one i probably listen to the most

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 17 February 2021 14:43 (five years ago)

I truly love Ryley's music and playing but I admit sometimes his singing style can really get on my nerves. Sorry, I should have said I truly lo-hove Ryley's musi-hic and playing but I admit someti-himes his singing style ca-han really get on my ner-herves.

Evan, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 18:41 (five years ago)

OK Land of Plenty just happened to come up in shuffle just now and it's still so great and comforting.

Evan, Wednesday, 17 February 2021 19:07 (five years ago)

His sty-hyle of singing grates with mee-hee as well sometimes.

Duke, Thursday, 18 February 2021 13:51 (five years ago)

Yeah I mean it just gets a little distracting for me if I think about it while I'm listening. Wish he did that specific thing a little less often. Only other thing that bothers and distracts me is my jealousy of people like him who can make their guitar do whatever they want effortlessly.

Evan, Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:49 (five years ago)

i like his singing but if u don’t i guess the good thing is he has like 4 releases per year of instrumental jammin

flopson, Thursday, 18 February 2021 19:51 (five years ago)

his singing is basically on par with bert jansch's singing for me, not a benefit or a detriment generally

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 18 February 2021 20:44 (five years ago)

he definitely has some ticks, but initially I liked his singing because it didn't fall into the standard indie rock modes.

tylerw, Thursday, 18 February 2021 21:32 (five years ago)

For me it's literally just that one thing. Once I notice it it's all I hear!

Evan, Thursday, 18 February 2021 22:57 (five years ago)

I love Jansch's vocals!

But I also get that they aren't traditionally what you'd consider great esp when contrasted with his playing

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:01 (five years ago)

I don't dislike either Jansch or Walker's vox, they do the job just fine for me, I just wouldn't ever say wow these guys are great singers

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:09 (five years ago)

Walter's singing can be annoying because of the si-hi-hinging style. I don't understand why we need to compare him to Jansch.

Duke, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:25 (five years ago)

If anything Jansch can be oddly annoying because he breathes loudly through his nose while playing

Duke, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:26 (five years ago)

― Duke, Friday, 19 February 2021 00:25

I mean *Walker's* of course. Autocorrect

Duke, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:28 (five years ago)

singing on ‘rang dizzy’ is lovely imho

flopson, Thursday, 18 February 2021 23:48 (five years ago)

New one is great — maybe his best? Very gastr del sol

― tylerw, Sunday, 14 February 2021 17:26 (five days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Apparently he's been playing with David Grubbs for a while now and they have a duo recording coming out soon

Ward Fowler, Friday, 19 February 2021 00:36 (five years ago)

Little Common Twist with Charles Rumback is fantastic

trip maker, Friday, 19 February 2021 16:54 (five years ago)

The Kikagaku Moyo collab reminds me of La Novia, minus throatsinging. At least until it turns into Gottsching territory.

trip maker, Saturday, 20 February 2021 00:55 (five years ago)

Jeff W, Monday, 8 March 2021 16:18 (five years ago)

the soul patch in the reaction video really brings it home

adam, Monday, 8 March 2021 16:21 (five years ago)

I don't mind Ryley leaning into comedy now that he's sober. Also thought it was funny that I pre-ordered his new one on CD Thursday and got a shipping notification within an hour.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 March 2021 16:35 (five years ago)

same thing with the Kikagaku Moyo record I bought - he's on top of things!

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 March 2021 17:10 (five years ago)

I mean, I'm assuming in this case the shipping notification is just the label being printed/created, just never seen it move that quickly. And it's already out for delivery today!

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 March 2021 17:12 (five years ago)

He's always been great at playing characters (has great instincts). Wonder if he's ever done improve or considered it.

Evan, Monday, 8 March 2021 17:23 (five years ago)

half the times i've seen him there have practically been ten minutes of standup material during the set

global tetrahedron, Monday, 8 March 2021 17:37 (five years ago)

lol i love that he keeps trying to get his mind around 4/4

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 March 2021 17:40 (five years ago)

just found out he plays psych guitar on the Spiral Galaxy record with Plastic Crimewave folks etc.

I like signing up to dead sites (sleeve), Monday, 8 March 2021 23:32 (five years ago)

Oh wow, I didn't know that either! I've been meaning to check that one out, I'll bump that higher on my list. Thanks.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 8 March 2021 23:34 (five years ago)

Yeah, this new is fantastic.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:00 (five years ago)

"new one", that should have been. Really great and probably my favorite thing he's done yet.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 March 2021 22:01 (five years ago)

It's wonderful in every way except for the songs themselves, which haven't reeled me in at all, save for the closer, 'Shiva with Dustpan', which finally rises to the level of 'memorable'. It's probably just me, though.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 00:51 (five years ago)

Great album, very Jim O’Rouke

akm, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 04:48 (five years ago)

where are yall hearing this? my bandcamp library still says "pre-order"

the kikagaku moyo collab is a burner and it's like the heaviest vinyl record i own, 1800g lp

adam, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 14:57 (five years ago)

xxpost i haven't heard the new one, but your experience lines up w/ mine, generally speaking ... for years now. i love everything about Ryley but i've just never been able to really latch on to his vocal melodies.

alpine static, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 17:25 (five years ago)

just from the singles this sounds pretty damn good

intern at pepe le pew research (Simon H.), Wednesday, 17 March 2021 17:48 (five years ago)

his vocal melodies

Yeah, that's the main sticking point for me as well. I assume this is why I loved the (instrumental) Kikagaku Moyo collab so much.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 17 March 2021 19:01 (five years ago)

where are yall hearing this? my bandcamp library still says "pre-order"

Yeah I still haven't gotten the digital version, but my CD copy showed up like two days after I placed the pre-order. Was definitely not expecting that to be the case.
