I've posted that twice..but I'll do it again. I like Tom Petty, The Cure, The Misfits, Rush, Plaid, Roadhaven, Bob Marley, Queens of the Stone Age, and Fury Monk to name a few. Although I'm not as obsessed as you, I do like Killing Joke. I'm a very firm believer that Jaz is God. Or...a least the second coming of christ.

I said that Dave Matthews Band rarely plays in tune. I didn't say it was impossible to tune woodwinds. And really, it's only the songs where they really feature the fiddle and horns playing together that it really grates on my ears.

My reasons for hating them, apart from whatever else has been already mentioned:

A guy by the name of J0hn L00 who tried to browbeat me into liking them years ago. In every single American high school and small college with a jazz band, the three 'cool guys' in the rhythm section (gtr/bs/drm) have an awful polite groovy rock band together and they inevitably will draft their one even 'cooler' poet/philosopher/rollerblader friend into playing acoustic and singing. This was J0hn L00. He was in the middle of MERELY EXPLAINING to me how 'techno' could never mean anything because it was TECHNOLOGY which could never TOUCH THE UNIVERSAL SCOPE or whatever the fuck he was saying, when (we were on a bus iirc) he asked if I liked DMB, to which I said no I most certainly do not. His respnonse: OH BUT DAVE IS JUST SO MUSICAL.

"hike up your dress a little more/ and show your world to me:" This line insenses me more than any other line from any other song ever. In any kind of just relations among the genders saying "hike...world..." would earn you derision, lawsuits, and a lonely life, and (yank away the curtain of poesy here) "LEMME SEE YOUR PUSSY" would be the gleeful playful die-rect request btw actual living bodied humans that I must believe it is. But alas that's not our world obviously, not yet, and this song isn't helping any.

I can't imagine a line more duplicitous, more violent, more ugly. It's not a world, dickhead! Yes I get it, he wants to nice-guy his way into this girl's pants, but with his cute lil met-a-phor he obliterates her subjectivity and says back to us over his shoulder "dude they're all sisters."

(god this song pisses me off) Anyone who calls your genitals "a world" is clearly a creep and pig and will never go down on you unless under extreme duress and will at that point be crap at it on purpose to spite you. You know that I am right.

That's a reason for hating them? That's a bit superficial if you don't mind me saying. First of all, when he wrote the song those lyrics weren't in it and that's not even what the song is about if you listen to more than that one line. It wasn't like he said 'hey let me write a song about looking at some girl's "world" because I'm a shallow, adamant bastard.' Dave was adlibbing, as he often does, during one performance before the song was even recorded, and people laughed. So..when they recorded it he just sang it that way. If you take into account that the lyrics in the rest of the close to 150 songs that he's written are completely respectable, I think they cancel out that one debatable line. Also..that's about 1/4 as imprudent as the bulk of music played on "the piece of shit that is MTV". That's a feeble excuse for not liking them.

I've accepted reasons not to like them from people with valid points, buddy. I accepted that his voice is kinda cooky sometimes and that could be a turn off to their music. And that you just plain don't like the feel of it, or that it's not "hard enough" for your tastes. Pretty much anything that is an opinion, I can accept, and that's why I stopped being so defensive on this thread..because the majority of you actually have legitimate, well-founded standpoints.
The reasons I can't understand are "too many people like them, and they're all hippies and frat boys" or "that one line in that one song about girls hiking up their skirts means he's a perverted pedophile and gets with like 30 groupies after every show" and all things similar to that. I do give credit where credit it due...but that's too hypercritical to give any recognition.

OK. Granted, "too many people like them" is not a good reason for hating something. But "frat boys and hippies like them" and "that line about girls hiking up their skirts" seem like valid reasons.
The former: if someone you respect likes music that you're not fond of, you might be willing to give it another chance based on that respect. It works the other way too: if someone whose tastes differ from yours completely on almost every subject (ie, hippies and frat boys) like a certain band, it might not be good reason alone not to like that band, but with other factors, it can certainly add to the hatred. Especially because if you go to a DMB show, these are the people you will almost certainly be forced to socialize with.
The latter: I'm sorry, but even if this is "only one line" and "a joke," it's a pretty fucking sexist thing to say and reflective of an attitude that's deserving of hatred. A joke can be sexist, and even if it is only one line, it's one that he chose to make public in a forum open to millions of people, which is not the wisest thing to do if you're a "completely respectable" person.

I hate him partly for the same reason I hated pink floyd the first 16 years of my life: overexposure. I once spent a summer taking courses at a college in Bham (mind you, this was 2000) and my discman held the only 2 speakers that weren't playing his music 24/7. Also, his lyrics are shit, all of his music that isn't pathetically overproduced like "the space between" sounds the goddamn same. plus he tries to pretend like he's this laid back happy go lucky guy when he's really a coke addict.
all that aside, Don Lennon's pair of songs about him make it all worthwhile.

okay...now that I got that out.
Sorry if I skip over some points on your posts, it's about 20 of you guys vs. one of me, and I'm too lazy to go back and read everthing. Basically...you're saying if everyone started liking a band you like, you should stop listening to them. If you look up at the bands I like, you'll probably see that it's not the normal roster of DMB fans, and may even have some bands you like. I'm definetly not your definition of the conventional fan, given that I listen to and play MANY diverse styles of music (DMB being far from my favorite). You're probably thinking "then why the fuck does she like DMB, who is seemingly borning and uninspiring"? I was sceptical of their music at first, also thought only the potheads listened to them and anything they like wouldn't be applealing to me.
Anyway..if you can go along with me for a second I promise there's a point to this...kinda. If any of you have had a time where even if your life is ostensibly normal, but you still feel constantly futile, you can relate. Music somtimes is the only thing that alleviates that feeling. The bands that I listened to at the time were pretty hard-line and aggressive, so I needed something mellow. What band is mellow most of the time? That's right..DMB, very good! I realized that they weren't as boring as I initially thought and they actually had a lot of talent and substance in their playing. If you can't get over the fact that one comment, which I, as a woman, don't find nearly as offensive or sexist as the majority of music produced by most artists, mainstream or otherwise, then you probably have a verrryyy modest music lineup.
People keep bringing up "the space between" which is, in my opinion, one of the shittiest songs they've written. Unless you're a tactless, imperceptive bastard, you'd at least acknowledge that Dave's lyrics are heartfelt and sincere.
By the way, his lifestyle has much changed since their early days. The comment about being a coke addict may have been accurate 10 years ago, but now it is a bit outdated.
