I think people go to Bon Iver as penance for doing wrong in their lives, like donning a hairshirt only for your ears

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:44 (five years ago)

lmao

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:45 (five years ago)

Yeah, I was referring to his general musical collaboration, not purely vocals, though I do like his backing vocals on the chorus of "Ivy". He did the drums and electric guitar on "Cowboy." Also the banjo on "Ivy," along with the triangle, apparently.

I earnestly love The National but I seem to be allergic to everything they and their associates touch.

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:47 (five years ago)

xp fair enough, but i doubt that's what he meant or what anyone goes to Bon Iver for, his guitaring

― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Tuesday, January 26, 2021 12:43 PM (two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

Nah, I love his electric guitar solo on "Cowboy" and commented as such in the Evermore thread. Reminds me of "beth/rest"

Indexed, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:47 (five years ago)

I earnestly love The National

In my world, Alligator was the last album they released.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:48 (five years ago)

ok i stand corrected

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:48 (five years ago)

oh man i didn't realize it was ol bonnie playing that guitar solo, that's like the best part of the song and album

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:49 (five years ago)

Every time I hear Swift duet with Bon Iver or Berninger I think, "Her characters can't be as smart or observant as I or she thinks if she dates these morose trembly dudes."

I like The National in bits, Dessner's a solid collaborator, just don't think their sensibilities mesh.

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:50 (five years ago)

"My Rajneesh" really is very nice. Better luck next time on the album.

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:52 (five years ago)

(The luck is for me, I pre-ordered this last one.)

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:52 (five years ago)

yeah not sure what happened to this sufjan album but "my rajneesh" is excellent

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:53 (five years ago)

People still listen to Sufjan Stevens?

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:54 (five years ago)

did we I talk about “Jerusalema” enough?

had missed this perfect little post by Brad:

every time i listened to that hook last year it's like it cleared out all the bad air in the room

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:54 (five years ago)

i nearly preordered it on the strength of that track but figured Sufjan would be exactly the sort of person to make a B-side miles ahead of anything on the album proper

though I've only listened to The Ascension once, thought it was pretty good for the first 2 tracks then found myself incredibly bored as everything sounded the same as everything else

frogbs, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:54 (five years ago)

Somebody on ILM called Charli’s 2020 album a definitive quarantine document and now it’s hard for me to hear “anthem” as anything other than the superjacked, strobelit, ultrathirsty bedroom pop COVID keen of desperation that it is.

i never listened to this album last year bc i am allergic to gecs

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:55 (five years ago)

Yessss. Didn't vote for this one but it bangs v v v hard

imago, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:55 (five years ago)

upon listening to this nothing has changed

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:55 (five years ago)

Hard pass.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:56 (five years ago)

guess this bodes well for forever

nxd, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:56 (five years ago)

meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:56 (five years ago)

itt: dadpop bores

imago, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:56 (five years ago)

wild that the difference between #77 and #49 is only 24 points

also wild that at this stage there’s still songs placing on just four votes

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:57 (five years ago)

too low!!!

maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:57 (five years ago)

I listened to how i'm feeling now once in full and basically never since, not sure why

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:57 (five years ago)

i'm sure there are plenty of people on rym who think this is the greatest thing that happened to pop music

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:57 (five years ago)

Great album great song

abcfsk, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:58 (five years ago)

there was one song on the first Charli XCX song I fucking loved ("You - Ha Ha Ha") and nothing else she's done has been remotely as enjoyable

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:58 (five years ago)

also wild that at this stage there’s still songs placing on just four votes

already slightly regretting going unranked this year

stylish but illegal (Simon H.), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:58 (five years ago)

i realise i've been rather negative ITT so far but crikey this is a dry stretch. none of my votes have appeared yet so hoping things will get more interesting

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:58 (five years ago)

lmao "first Charli XCX album", I am tired

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:58 (five years ago)

when i hear the songs i hadnt heard before i start feeling really good abt my filter

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 18:59 (five years ago)

grins is my go to track off true romance

nxd, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:00 (five years ago)

I still cape for "Lock You Up," and maybe "Boom Clap" if I'm feeling corny, but her instincts are pure trash.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:00 (five years ago)

can't believe my eyes in here

maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:01 (five years ago)

puretrash is the point

nashwan, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:02 (five years ago)

sorry if this isn't 'tasteful' enough for u bozos

imago, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:03 (five years ago)

also wild that at this stage there’s still songs placing on just four votes

In one sense, I'm relived that only four people voted for this, but also disappointed that in the past this song would probably have been 78'ed.

I've liked other things she's done, but a big part of why I like that song is the Gold Panda sample.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:04 (five years ago)

Conversely this is the first year I’ve fully bought into charli

abcfsk, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:05 (five years ago)

I'll save my full rapturous appraisal for the albums poll, but this is one of the most fun things I heard last year. What forks said about desperation is exactly right. 'Anthems' is the epitome of quarantined liminal hysteria - the fighting of dark madness with bubblegum mania and dancing!

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:06 (five years ago)

"my rajneesh" v boring

"anthems" certainly a 'concept' but not very good or listenable

dyl, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:07 (five years ago)

My favorite Charli XCX song is "Superlove". I had no interest in 2020 Charli XCX at all.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:07 (five years ago)

count me also into the '2020 is when Charli went god-tier' bracket

imago, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:08 (five years ago)

truly the music of lockdown

imago, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:08 (five years ago)

Kind of surprised by the Charli hate, but then I'm also a gecs fan, so what do i know?

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:09 (five years ago)

And yes, she did an amazing job of capturing the quarantine vibe

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 19:10 (five years ago)
