LOL

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Saturday, 26 December 2020 03:54 (five years ago)

it should not be a controversial music opinion to celebrate 90125 as the best album of the 1980s

I'm not sure enough people hold this opinion for it to be the subject of controversy (and I will stan all day for Yes from 1971-1977).

They sold me a dream of Christmas (Sund4r), Saturday, 26 December 2020 04:55 (five years ago)

solid work

Chet Atkins, for all his guitar prowess, is an extremely boring musician.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 31 December 2020 15:39 (five years ago)

All of Tanya Tagaq's songs sound friggin identical. The first one's a banger but there's infinitely more variety in every recording of Inuit vocal games I've heard.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 02:45 (five years ago)

that’s not what she’s doing is it?

Left, Friday, 1 January 2021 16:27 (five years ago)

There's a wide range of musical styles from Auk/Blood to Animism to Retribution!

Marconi plays the mamba (Sund4r), Friday, 1 January 2021 18:11 (five years ago)

Yeah that is as controversial as "all bop sounds the same", it's wrong, and additionally, it is wrong

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 1 January 2021 18:14 (five years ago)

Electronic beats and synth pads vs looser live instrumentation; layered looped vocals vs organic improv; beatless jams vs strongly rhythmic tracks; guest rapper vs sung alt-rock covers vs guttural vocalization vs screaming etc

Marconi plays the mamba (Sund4r), Friday, 1 January 2021 18:15 (five years ago)

Yeah, Tagaq does a whole bunch of things. I don't like most of them, and usually find myself skipping through her albums in search of one or two tracks that are what I'm actually after, but it's impossible to say it's "all the same" unless one is literally not listening.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 1 January 2021 18:31 (five years ago)

Deflatormouse deflated.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 1 January 2021 18:39 (five years ago)

enough things happen in the Retribution title-track alone to negate that opinion tbh

imago, Friday, 1 January 2021 18:40 (five years ago)

enjoy how ILM perks up at the merest whiff of Turrican lol

imago, Friday, 1 January 2021 18:41 (five years ago)

Heh, I've already divested myself of that opinion. I ended up listening to a wider sampe of her material last night than I had previously, after reading an interview that referred to her range and named corresponding tracks etc

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 19:42 (five years ago)

Tagaq had been one of my "Artists Who are Totally Your Thing 'On Paper' That You Nevertheless Do Not Like" or "Artists You Keep Trying To Get Into". I think the wall I kept hitting with was going for the same 2 or 3 videos on Youtube every time that happened to be in a similar vein. Liking the first one enough to keep going, then getting the impression that's all there is.
Anyway I'm obsessed with Tanya Tagaq rn

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 19:50 (five years ago)

^typical Turrican move ;)

imago, Friday, 1 January 2021 19:52 (five years ago)

What's a Turrican? :)

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 20:01 (five years ago)

former poster who infamously hated on The 1975 in a really annoying way, baiting their fans something rotten, then decided they were amazing and proceeded to love them in a possibly even more annoying way, now banned

dw though I'm not seriously comparing you to him lol

imago, Friday, 1 January 2021 20:03 (five years ago)

good luck on your tanya tagaq quest

imago, Friday, 1 January 2021 20:03 (five years ago)

Deflatormouse I highly, highly encourage you to see Tagaq live when the opportunity presents itself, she is one of the best live acts in the world

She gave this performance the night she won Polaris. I don't know if the video is as effective as "actually being there" was, but it was easily the single most arresting performance I've ever witnessed.

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 1 January 2021 20:07 (five years ago)

Yeah I've seen her three times and she was stellar each time.

Marconi plays the mamba (Sund4r), Friday, 1 January 2021 20:08 (five years ago)

We need to reserve the term "banger" or "slaps" solely for songs that are uptempo, with prominent drums and/or rhythm sections (as in, the sonics match the onomatopoeia). I feel misled when I read a review of a track, and it says "she just dropped another one that slaps", or "Bob Dylan's latest banger" and its a slow folky campfire-style tune with basically no percussion.

Xxxp I still haven't hearf the 1975 tbh, i always get them mixed up with DFA 1979
I am gonna check out this link and the Retribution track now, thx
Would love to see her live.
Also, she gives wonderful interviews

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 20:12 (five years ago)

Lol fair enough

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 20:12 (five years ago)

her Polaris acceptance was great, distinctly remember her leading off with 'fuck PETA' lol

imago, Friday, 1 January 2021 20:17 (five years ago)

Thank you fgti, that was the most beautiful performance I have ever seen and now I am crying in public

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 20:29 (five years ago)

Glad you enjoyed it! The addition of the Element Choir (led by Christine Duncan) was incendiary

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 1 January 2021 21:05 (five years ago)

Her book is also rather good, I thought!

"Bi" Dong A Ban He Try (the table is the table), Friday, 1 January 2021 21:27 (five years ago)

YES, the choir put it over the top for me. I'm down to check out more of their work for sure. xp

btw my use of "banger" above more or less in accordance with Prefecture's definition. That's what I meant.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 1 January 2021 21:51 (five years ago)

She performed with the choir in Ottawa when touring Retribution - it was great!

Marconi plays the mamba (Sund4r), Friday, 1 January 2021 22:07 (five years ago)

despite being otm, 'o superman' is a relentlessly terrible song

ha ha ha ha

mookieproof, Saturday, 2 January 2021 03:42 (five years ago)

No, I think you mean ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

Cow_Art, Saturday, 2 January 2021 04:17 (five years ago)

Four Jacks and a Jill (morrisp), Saturday, 2 January 2021 04:22 (five years ago)

Deflatormouse, you are totally correct on that one!

Bill Bruford's drumbeat for "South Side of the Sky": proto-dubstep? (Prefecture), Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:46 (five years ago)

Very much agree, re: 'O Superman' and Laurie Anderson in general.

pomenitul, Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:49 (five years ago)

Beta Band s/t is good as hell actually

Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:59 (five years ago)

prob not controversial in 2020

‘controversial music opinions if you’re time traveling to the year 2000’

Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Saturday, 2 January 2021 19:01 (five years ago)

wasn’t it the beta band themselves who really hated it?

brimstead, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:00 (five years ago)

anyway, I agree, will

brimstead, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:06 (five years ago)

It was, and it was a dumb move. EMI hated them for it, I gave it a cursory listen at the time.

Now, I love it.

Mark G, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:08 (five years ago)

I used to be colder on the second half but now I think the whole thing’s marvelous

brimstead, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:48 (five years ago)

I got the deluxe version with the extra disc that was "supposed to be" an extra at the time. Don't bother.

Mark G, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:50 (five years ago)

Obviously it's amazing. Not controversial at all. But nice

imago, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:57 (five years ago)

huh maybe it was the band that was dissatisfied and loudest about it

I felt like it got dunked on p hard on music nerd msg boards at the time

Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:01 (five years ago)

but yes it’s v good. tbh I’ve got time for pretty much everything they put out

Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:02 (five years ago)

Also correct

imago, Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:05 (five years ago)

it’s their Katy Lied

(which is often days my favorite SD)

Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:18 (five years ago)

I think the reviews were bad because the band said it was bad, so etc.

So, emi dropped their efforts at promotion...

Mark G, Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:35 (five years ago)

The quality of Daft Punk albums is inversely proportional to their US chart placement
