sleeve: what liner notes were you looking for 2 weeks ago? MTPITD doesn't have any? (my original CD has the track titles + A Chalice Recording / Graal CD002 on the back (the word Red in red, twice), then a multicolored ring on the inner artwork with john balance, thighpaulsandra, peter christopherson, drew mcdowall around it, and that's it for notes)

Anyone else still waiting on their Dais order of MTPITD? I managed to snag a first edition but no sign of it yet

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 14:22 (five years ago)

raises hand
Considering trans atlantic shipping and covid19, I'm waiting patiently..

willem, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 14:48 (five years ago)

xps StanM it's extremely frustrating, but they did write liner notes talking about the MTPITD songs specifically, and they used to be online. They were not included in the actual release.

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 15:10 (five years ago)

Can you remember what website they were on? maybe check archive.org?

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 15:42 (five years ago)

90% sure they used to be on the damn Brainwashed site! SO frustrating, I remember they described "Red Birds" as "99% Thighpaulsandra" for example. Just a paragraph or two about each song.

from wiki:

"Jhonn Balance originally wished to create a cohesive set of liner notes for Musick to Play in the Dark, which ended up only being published on Coil's website at the time.[4]"

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 15:51 (five years ago)

"In them, he outlined the meanings of songs: "Are You Shivering?" refers to MDMA trips he took part in with friends, where they "would ask if each other were shivering, as pure doses can make the teeth chatter and the eyesight vibrate", "Broccoli" is "about greens and ancestor worship", and "Strange Birds", built around a found quote, refers to a period when Jhonn "regressed to BIRD MIND and only squawked and chirruped for three worrying days".[4] He stated that Coil had begun creating "lunar consciousness musick", and were "letting in things we shut out before"; "The feminine. The tidal. The cyclical."[4]"

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 15:51 (five years ago)

Yeah that's how I found it :) Note 4.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 15:52 (five years ago)

anagram that's it, thanks!

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 15:53 (five years ago)

really wish those had been included w/ the reissue

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 15:54 (five years ago)

print it off and slip it inside the, er, sleeve :)

drip some of your own blood onto it for your own personalized Coil reissue

ooooh, nice - thanks for the link and info

definitely one for the "famous people you wouldn't expect to see together" thread

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Thursday, 17 December 2020 11:59 (five years ago)

wiki says she did a TV commercial for the Bristol & West Building Society that he worked on, presumably that's the connection.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Thursday, 17 December 2020 12:03 (five years ago)

I'd guess he would have had interactions with the artists Hipgnosis worked with too? Don't know if there's any pics of him with UFO or the Scorpions or whoever though.
Never realised his dad had a knighthood btw! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derman_Christopherson

that's a hard e-no from me (Matt #2), Thursday, 17 December 2020 12:16 (five years ago)

LSD!

manuel, Saturday, 19 December 2020 04:17 (five years ago)

was wondering when that was gonna happen

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Saturday, 19 December 2020 04:29 (five years ago)

Just purchased. Thanks! Doesn't ship till May so that'll be a nice surprise after I've forgotten about it. My fourth favorite Coil after HR, MTPIND1, and AoN, but still a perfect record

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 19 December 2020 17:35 (five years ago)

Hmm, so I've heard that the Infinite Fog version there is not necessarily a 'real' reissue. (But what is real?)

In any event, Wax Trax have announced their own specific reissue for June:

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 01:22 (five years ago)

that makes... much more sense

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 01:26 (five years ago)

Rather.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 01:28 (five years ago)

Check out this all-Coil two hour mix. I don't know if it's an introduction for newbies or a best of or what but I know what I like.

paolo, Thursday, 31 December 2020 17:57 (five years ago)

My understanding is that MTPITD and Ape Of Naples are the fans' favourite albums but what would be the top tracks if there was a poll? I'm guessing Tainted Love would be up there.

paolo, Thursday, 31 December 2020 17:59 (five years ago)

I think Broccoli would be my fave.

paolo, Thursday, 31 December 2020 17:59 (five years ago)

the book is really quite amazing, but it's a bit frustrating that all the magazine articles reproduced are almost all at least partially obscured, I'm guessing to avoid copyright issues

the full page color artwork stuff is just fabulous, and some of the correspondence is too (Cosey getting pissed about the Assume Power Focus boot LP)

otm about Broccoli

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:01 (five years ago)

Would anyone care to scan and upload the entire book for those of us currently in the poor house?

Not serious btw!

I'd be very surprised if Tainted Love made a top tracks Coil poll, much as i love it.

My no. 1 has remained the same for near enough 3 and a half decades. Ostia, always and forever.

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:10 (five years ago)

Broccoli at 2. Going Up at 3. Beyond that, a crapshoot.

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:11 (five years ago)

Someone do a Coil poll!

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:13 (five years ago)

Please.

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:18 (five years ago)

Why the hell not, what better way to see in the new year

paolo, Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:35 (five years ago)

I've never run a poll, but I would try that

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:47 (five years ago)

Yay!

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 18:50 (five years ago)

I'm in for a poll

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 31 December 2020 19:15 (five years ago)

The Ape Of NaPOLLs - it's the Coil albums poll

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Thursday, 31 December 2020 19:16 (five years ago)

wait so what is the deal with the infinite fog reissue? is it not authorized?

akm, Thursday, 31 December 2020 20:50 (five years ago)

arguably none of the reissues are authorised. i think the infinite fog one is one step away from being a bootleg.

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 20:55 (five years ago)

It's a little um, unclear what "commissioned artwork by Steven Stapleton" means. I mean.. it was originally wasn't it?

Germs! Germs! Germs! (Noel Emits), Thursday, 31 December 2020 20:57 (five years ago)

This is all probably upthread somewhere, but did neither of them have any relatives or anything? Surely the assets of an estate would revert to the next of kin under the rules of intestacy, or failing that the Treasury (which would mean the Crown could legally reissue Coil LPs, lol).

meanwhile back at the song (Matt #2), Thursday, 31 December 2020 21:20 (five years ago)

Yes, there are relatives but it is ultra complicated and it seems nobody is able to agree on anything so it all sits perennially in limbo.

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 December 2020 21:28 (five years ago)

consensus feeling that wax trax reissue will be better than the infinite fog one? didn't see any mastering details and infinite fog's bandcamp page is almost impossible to read with dark text on a dark background.

akm, Thursday, 31 December 2020 23:01 (five years ago)

I ordered the Infinite Fog one before I saw the Wax Trax reissue announcement so I hope the Infinite Fog one is legit in the sense that it, uh, arrives

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 1 January 2021 00:24 (five years ago)

three weeks pass...

Really into S&CS for a few months now. The alternate versions of "Futhur" and "Love's Secret Domain" blow me away every time. Could anyone recommend other stuff in this vein, not necessarily Coil-related?

manuel, Monday, 25 January 2021 22:30 (five years ago)

I wish there was more music (by anyone) that sounded anything like Batwings.

toby, Saturday, 30 January 2021 20:43 (five years ago)

two weeks pass...

Yowsa!

I'm honored to say that I have written the liner notes for the 30th anniversary re-release of Coil's "Love's Secret Domain" LP on WaxTrax! Records. Thanks to @beeradam and Stephen Thrower for assistance coordinating the interviews. Persistence is all.https://t.co/fp8VoWUcQt

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 February 2021 00:43 (five years ago)

My liner notes draw upon new interviews w Stephen Thrower, Annie "Anxiety" Bandez, Marc Almond, Billy McGee, Rose McDowall, Charles Hayward, Stephen Stapleton and more to shed more light upon the writing, recording & release of this uncannily prescient album.
RIP Geff & Sleazy
