Most of the English language tracks are very cringey for me. Couldn't get through them.

The Samthing EP is glorious!Upbeat, uptempo amapiano with producer De Mthuda at the helm for most of the tracks. I love Aymos and Daliwonga, but it’s a real treat to hear The Original Vocalist flexing again. Opener “Chomi” had me jumping around in the early morning, “Tilili” is one for the ages (love the interplay with his own voice and co-vocalist MalumNator), first single “Weekend”, which I liked not loved, falls perfectly into place here, and the live medley of previous hits with the Mzansi Youth Choir brings joy to the world.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dox4zTHHoHQSamthing Soweto ft. I'm 3/4 into the Sun-El and I find it ridiculously consistent and pleasant. I guess it's the kind of fuck you artists can give to music nerds obsessed about quality over quantity or the need to produce tracks that can go into ILM polls. South Africa's obsession with Aaliyah's "Try Again" is funny.

So is no one listening to the new Samthing? Try “Tilili” at least, folx!(please don’t tell me y’all are too wrapped up in the noms bizz. December is part of 2020 too, the busiest part in SA in fact when it comes to new releases)
― obsessed with quality over quantity or the need to produce tracks (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 15 December 2020 12:25 (five years ago)
The songs are a little bit too squarely in the amapiano norm: not a problem as background to his fantastic voice but lacking the dynamics of his hits. Tilili is the best but the track still moves like a slug you could find at the end of any KDS album.
Yesterday I listened to every Dj Manzo SA / Comado / Mthandazo Gyata song and these guys have true potential.
― Nabozo, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 19:57 (five years ago)
yeah the samthing EP (lol that 36 minutes is now an EP with amapiano track lengths) is decent but sometimes feels a little too amapiano-by-numbers and isn't as strong as last year's album. still pleasant though

Sun-El's new album African Electronic Dance Music is out today, a little more palatable than the last one at "only" one hour & 3 minutes. The first four and last two tracks on initial contact seem like the highlights

honestly, i slept on the last one. it's definitely way too long, but i really like disc 2 and disc 1 has several great tracks too
― dyl, Saturday, 6 November 2021 02:23 (four years ago)
I love him but his work is so samey it can be hard to pick out highlights. Not really a criticism but if I’m enthusing about him, I’ll still send friends to Akanamali first.

Or Emakhaya. Ok there’s a few…
― Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 6 November 2021 13:22 (four years ago)
yeah the last album definitely suffered from being nearly 3 hours, i'm sure it would have been much more enjoyable if you cut it down to the best hour or less, but getting to that point would be a real challenge
new one seems better on first listen, though the vocal tracks are notably stronger than the instrumentals
― ufo, Sunday, 7 November 2021 00:16 (four years ago)
love the album all the way thru
tho he has something of a signature aesthetic i don't know if it's quite fair to call his music samey. there are a few tracks on here that i would not have guessed were by him if they'd been in the middle of a mix/comp or something
― dyl, Monday, 8 November 2021 00:26 (four years ago)
it's only really an issue over the course of a 3 hour album
― ufo, Monday, 8 November 2021 00:30 (four years ago)
The number of tracks seems to come from a place of generosity, though, rather than “lack of quality control”
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 8 November 2021 14:32 (four years ago)
Three quarters of this - the first half and last few songs - are excellent. "Amateki," "Higher," and "Bestfriend" especially. "Amateki" is an immediate mood boost. "Higher" has a spiritual quality to it and is one of my favorite tracks of the year. The third-quarter of the album, which consists of instrumental afro-house tracks "Jozi", "Spiritual Bomb," and "Alone" I wish was about 10 minutes shorter.
