the occasional quite obscure bandcamp etc. release does get reviewed but it's not common or anything and i wouldn't expect it to be.

ufo, Sunday, 29 November 2020 09:23 (five years ago)

Have they given a full-length review to an unsigned artist since this one? (Serious q)

meditate in my direction (morrisp), Sunday, 29 November 2020 16:56 (five years ago)

we went over “they only reviews wilco and white guitar music” like 2-3 weeks ago and Austin stopped short of posting the rough draft of the manifesto he’ll post when he shoots up p4k hq like a week after that

― flopson, Saturday, November 28, 2020 1:05 PM

ignoring that you are essentially speaking out of turn for me, i have a couple of genuine questions-

1. have i ever said anything that was specifically offensive to you? in here or anywhere else? truly sorry if so.

2. when have i ever given the impression that i am not posting at least partially in jest? especially in this topic?

i don't think it's any secret that i don't like pfork and i never have. but that's where it ends. i might say, "fuck these people and everything they stand for!!!" but that's, like, part of the joke because i legitimately don't even read the site that often - maybe once a week, for less than ten minutes. it does upset me that so many people place such a high authority in what they publish, but oh well. it's a shitty music rag, what can i do?

(jokingly talk shit about it, that's what)

insinuating (even jokingly) that i'm the kind of person who would even consider violence as a reaction to something as meaningless as a music reviews site is disappointing and very disturbing. it's even more upsetting because it's such an egregious leap to make.

it's silly that i even need to clarify, but i just want it said: i have no ill will towards anyone on ilm who also contributes to pfork (or any major music publication). you guys are living your best life and are alright by me.

maybe suggest reviewing the slovenly catalogue for one of their sunday retrospectives? just to see the reaction. now that would be funny.

do you like My Life

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 November 2020 17:23 (five years ago)

slovenly second most underrated sst band behind saccharine trust

both bands would be great candidates for a cool remaster/reissue series and critical reassessment (like the pylon box) but frankly it's hard to fault Pitchfork for not caring about Greg Ginn's label when he doesn't himself give a fuck about the bands or label

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 29 November 2020 17:36 (five years ago)

slovenly went to my high school, maybe i will pitch a sunday review.

tylerw, Sunday, 29 November 2020 17:38 (five years ago)

need clarification, alfred: do you mean the album or, like, your existence?

actually, y'know what? doesn't matter because my answer is the same in both scenarios: i think the world is a better place for it/you being here.

ums: sst catalogue purgatory is a very sad and very real phenomenon that deserves its own topic. it would be wild to see pfork (or any other comparable publication) just dive into highlighting something that's been out of print for decades and is not really accessible in the contemporary world.

if anybody should write that piece, ot should be you, tyler \m/

Chance the Rapper is probably the most obvious example

jaymc, Sunday, 29 November 2020 17:44 (five years ago)

they just reviewed Roc Marciano

they reviewed MIKE when he was just bandcamp

signed/unsigned is an increasingly hard distinction to make in hip hop though

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 29 November 2020 17:54 (five years ago)

they reviewed a lot of Griselda stuff before the Shady Records deal

Are there any other written music review outlets (those solely dedicated to music, I guess) besides pitchfork at this point

Bongo Jongus, Sunday, 29 November 2020 18:16 (five years ago)

Stereogum does well.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 29 November 2020 18:17 (five years ago)

"contemporary guitar driven music, which is overwhelmingly mediocre."

it's true that the majority of the guitar driven music they choose to cover is mediocre, and most of the best rock since the mid 2010s has never been covered by pitchfork.

billstevejim, Monday, 30 November 2020 20:32 (five years ago)

they have somewhat covered african guitar stuff and the post fahey underground diaspora stuff but i'd push back on "guitar driven" music necessarily being U.S./U.K. rock bands too

man - is Ian Cohen’s new Smashing Pumpkins review good or what!

meditate in my direction (morrisp), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 15:53 (five years ago)

it's definitely or what

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 15:54 (five years ago)

Listening to Saccharine Trust's We Became Snakes - I didn't know this band were this good. This is a modern jazz album, basically.

what does p4k have against sault??? has anyone gotten to the bottom of this?

voting in the readers poll, most albums auto-populate but sault doesn't come up with anything

pitchfork is dumb

blue6ave, Thursday, 3 December 2020 05:39 (five years ago)

they didn't review either sault album, their list of albums for the autofill in the readers poll is always mostly just things they've reviewed

ufo, Thursday, 3 December 2020 05:53 (five years ago)

they only covered the Sault album in an Albums You May Have Missed list

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 3 December 2020 14:04 (five years ago)

lol I put 8 songs from Visions Of Bodies Being Burned on my tracks ballot because fuck you, Pitchfork

DJP, Thursday, 3 December 2020 15:03 (five years ago)

Giving them your data will definitely show them!

why are the ads on Pitchfork the absolute dregs of the shittiest content in the entire universe, I mean I feel unwell and sullied just seeing the images / taglines. It's like looking at a Daily Mail article.

assert (MatthewK), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 21:14 (five years ago)

lol @ pfork ever having standards higher than daily mail status.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 02:20 (five years ago)

well I thoroughly enjoyed the Fiona Apple interview they were polluting, but I take your point

assert (MatthewK), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 07:14 (five years ago)

I mean, generally how it works is if you can't sell ads you farm out that space to served ads which you don't necessarily control what shows

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 12:36 (five years ago)

also lmao like any media outlet can afford to be snooty about who's paying the bills in 2020

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 12:38 (five years ago)

it's actually kind of infuriating honestly, people hate paywalls but then bitch about ads

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 12:38 (five years ago)

I only loathe their beer promo articles like Margo Price knows more about beer than you wtf man i don't care about any of that

black dice live ft. jerry garcia (rizzx), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 13:12 (five years ago)

the beer thing is mystifying, everything I've read is so awkward and forced

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 13:43 (five years ago)

can't wait until full legalization and they start a cork sniffer weed column. that should be good for a few laughs.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:00 (five years ago)

I've never clicked on any of the October things... do they tie in product names? Or does it bring you to a page with relative ads outside of the content?

Evan, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:03 (five years ago)

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:06 (five years ago)

fwiw, i am pretty sure margo price does know more about beer than i do

la table sur la table (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:07 (five years ago)

I'm still kinda surprised that out of all the various Pitchfork spinoffs/partnerships that have happened over the years, October seems to be the one that has lasted the longest.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:10 (five years ago)

Your album opener “Dead Writer” mentions drinking. Have your drinking tastes changed over time?

Totally non-socipathic question to ask about these lyrics:

"Pour the booze down the drain
Cuz I don’t want to disappoint you anymore"

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:11 (five years ago)

^OMG!

Btw - how do people even find these "newly released" craft beers? Do they order them via mail? (I'm a beer guy, but I just pick from the usual selection in the local stores.)

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:12 (five years ago)

omfg to that question! what is wrong with them

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:14 (five years ago)

Maybe the lyrics were about her worrying her house guests were judgmental about her pedestrian choices in beer.

"Margo are you kidding me? A Citrus Gose in late fall? I will not drink something lighter than amber during sweater season you fucking idiot"

Evan, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:26 (five years ago)

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:45 (five years ago)

tbh brent dicrescenzo probably could have written a kinda funny essay about weekly beer releases

(also, there are weekly beer releases?)

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 17:46 (five years ago)

is brent dicrescenzo rich? did ryan schreiber and whoever else cashed out every go back and hook up the people and colleagues who got him to a place where he could cash out?
