i have a couple seldom scene records here. unless i sold them...

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)

I guess I didn't post about it here, but a regular customer gave me a three record set of privately pressed LPs by BIG SLIM, THE LONESOME COWBOY. He was apparently one of the regular performers on the WWVA Jamboree show and these LPs were issued after he passed away (as they are called the Big Slim Memorial whatever.) Anyway, they're pretty cool. I guess his deal was that he was one of the only non-bluegrass acts on the jamboree, specializing in a very well played kind of western/cowboy country. since it was all stuff recorded for/on the radio, the line-up varies quite a bit. some tracks will have fiddle, some steel, etc. There's not much info about him online as far as I can find.

ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

my dad played w the seldom scene a couple times!

69, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

my brother in law gave me some cool stuff to sell in the store. peter plonsky album Op.30 Hairy Vibe & Double Identity. (90's boot of old plonsky tape of cut-up craziness. i'd never heard it, very cool!) also, 80's album by function disorder. also, very cool! only thing i can find about function disorder on the web is a mutant sounds post.

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

should i put self-titled jo-ann kelly album on epic out for 20 or 25? super clean u.s. copy. like, really clean.

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

theres a buy-it-now up for 18.99 and a ringworn EX- copy with a few bidders at $4.21 with a day left -- sounds like $20 to me?

69, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, that's what i was thinking. but i kept looking at how pretty it was and i got greedy.

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

whoa escalator over a hill is really awesome

69, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

ian, does your store sell the sunbeam double album reissue of the first clark hutchinson album? i'm trying to find the best price. i haven't searched all the online stores yet. or amazon, for that matter. might be able to find a deal there. not that i can really afford it right now, but, um, i want it...

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

Hey scott.
I dunno if we have it in stock or not at the moment, it's my day off. but i can check. sunbeam stuff is really expensive in general :( i am sooooo over buying expensive psych reissues.

ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

it's really good though. and i can't afford an original. plus, it has an album of unreleased stuff. my brother in law played me the second album and i want that too now. one just sold for 50 bucks on ebay. i think it's actually worth 50 bucks.

hahaha, fuck you i hate you volume two:

On offer here is a VERY rare LP (especially in this condition!!!!) by Clark Hutchinson called "Retribution" and is an ORIGINAL 1970 UK 1st Pressing on the 1st Press Deram label!!! THIS LP IS SERIOUSLY RARE AND VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!!!! THIS IS ONE OF CLARK HUTCHINSON'S RAREST LPs EVER - AND VIRTUALLY NEVER TURNS UP FOR SALE!!!! JUST TRY AND FIND ANOTHER ONE!!!! BACK IN 1970 WHEN THIS LP WAS FIRST RELEASED - IT ONLY EVER SOLD IN ABSOLUTELY TINY AMOUNTS, AND WAS ALMOST IMMEDIATELY DELETED!!!! AS A RESULT IT IS SERIOUSLY RARE AND INCREDIBLY HARD TO LOCATE TODAY!!!! NOT ONLY THAT BUT THIS LP IS IN GREAT CONDITION OVERALL!!!! JUST TAKE A LOOK AT THE PICTURES!!!! THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 1970 UK 1ST PRESSING ON THE 1ST PRESS DERAM LABEL, 1ST PRESS INNER SLEEVE, AND 1ST PRESS 'SENOL PRINTING' LAMINATED COVER!!!! The record labels are in SUPERB condition (see pictures) with NO writing, NO wear, and only a few light spindle marks!!!! The vinyl is in GREAT condition overall!!!! Most of these 60s/70s LPs had been to a lot of wild parties and are usually found totally worn out, and almost unplayable. This one is NOT - but it does have 3 or 4 VERY light hairlines, a few visible scufflines (NON sounding!), and only a VERY few of the lightest paper scuffs only visible under light!!!! THE RECORD STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL 'JUST PRESSED' LOOK!!!! It is also great to find that the playing of the record is as STUNNING (if not BETTER!) as the visual!!!! It plays with NO nasty loud pops, only a few light clicks, NO jumps, NO sticks, and barely ANY crackle AT ALL!!!! The sound quality is simply SUPERB with NO groovewear and NO distortion either!!!! The record is also VERY slightly uneven - though this does NOT affect play in the slightest!!!! The record must MEGA STRICTLY grade Good++++ if not better!!!! Believe me this record is NOT overgraded in ANY way!!!! I use STRICT RC grading standards - it is not in my interest not to!!!! Brillant!!!! The record also comes in its ORIGINAL 1st Press inner sleeve which is in BRILLIANT condition!!!! The 1st Press 'Senol Printing' Laminated Cover is in BRILLIANT condition!!!! It has NO edge wear, NO spinal wear, only VERY slight corner wear (NOT through the colour!), only a few VERY light creases (cover is VERY flat looking!), shiny laminate, and NO writing!!!! The opening edge is beautifully straight with NO feathering!!!! Even the unlaminated back of the cover is in BRILLIANT condition with NO yellowing, NO grubbyness, NO ringwear, NO rubbing, and NO writing!!!! The cover must grade Very Good++ if not better!!!! THIS LP IS SERIOUSLY RARE AND SIMPLY IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCATE - SO DONT MISS OUT ON THIS ULTRA RARE OPPORTUNITY!!!!

man, i hate it when my records sneak out at night to party. always come home looking like hell, reeking of cigarettes & gin.

ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

FRAT ROCK youre grounded

69, Monday, 6 July 2009 18:08 (sixteen years ago)

I just got a personal holy grail record I've been trying to find for like 9 years! It's not actually rare at all, in fact I got it for £1 + shipping off Ebay, it was more that I didn't know what record the song was on in the first place.

I got this studio version of Great Big Kiss by the New York Dolls off Napster in around 2000 or so, one of the first mp3s I ever downloaded, and I'd never been able to find out where the hell it came from (wasn't tagged with the album) - I'd downloaded all these rarities comps which all had either demo or live versions of the song, I finally found out the only place it's ever been released is on this comp that came out in the 80s called Night Of The Living Dolls. Anyway, now I own it and am a happy camper.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Haven't bought any records in a few weeks but I'm going to Chicago this weekend, so...

Trip Maker, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

record store found me a copy of jesus lizard singles 9-pack huzzah huzzah

Snop Snitchin, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

wheelchair epidemic is probably my fave jesus lizard single. i had them all at one point. the only time i ever bought anything by nirvana! cuzza the split they did with the lizard.

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:29 (sixteen years ago)

scott have u never heard nirvana's "bleach" lp cuz i mean seriously dude that shit is killer.

ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

hit up Bagatelle Records in Long Beach before heading over to a party in Playa del Rey, picked up:

- Beach Boys, Holland (w/ 7") - I'll need to get another copy since this one skips right in the middle of Dennis' big song on side two, but um yeah this album is AMAZING. will be swinging by Amoeba today in search of Carl & the Passions.

- Todd Rundgren, Runt - meh, it's no AWATS, but it was only $5 so w/e

- Harry Nilsson, Knniillssonnn (or whatever) - great record in AMAZING condition, would be worth it for "All I Think About Is You" even if the rest of the album sucked ass

- Talking Heads, Fear of Music - "Cities"/"Life During Wartime" is one of the best 1-2 punches in the history of music

- Phillip Glass, Satyaragha 3xLP - seventeen bucks! and it's in perfect condition! exclamation points!

passed on the lead in "all i can do is crossups cuz ihave no skills" (jamescobo), Monday, 6 July 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

i think i heard the tape once? i don't remember much about it. i liked tad back then. seriously, neither one of them is as great as fudge tunnel though. or killdozer for that matter.

x-grunge-post

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

i still need to hear that melvins album though. the gluey porch treatments one. cuz if it's good enough for eyehategod then it's good enough for me. er, speaking of grunge-related stuff.

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

no thoughts on my taped-up reissue calamity?!

I intend on posting to this thread more often by the way, just to brag about the cool stuff I've found recently.
For now: I got Holger Czukay's "Movies" and am psyched, since I've wanted it for quite awhile. Also got another copy of Vangelis' "Earth" on Vertigo t replace my 80's reissue.

Now I need some new stylus cleaner.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 6 July 2009 20:07 (sixteen years ago)

oh and I passed up a Ron Geesin record from '77 for $20. was that a mistake?

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 6 July 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

well.. it could have been a reissue also, in which case, no, not really.

ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

Scott, is A=MH2 the first Clark Hutchinson album? I got that on eBay about six or seven years ago, cost me about £4 off some Cornish guy. Is it worth much? It's a stereo version on Decca Nova, not in the greatest shape, but passable.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Monday, 6 July 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, no, I've found the answer to my own question - Blues is the first one, right?

Enemy Insects (NickB), Monday, 6 July 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

oh wait i don't know then. i thought a=mh2 was the first one. that's the sunbeam reissue. and the original does go for buxx. haven't heard Blues. just a=mh2 and retribution. retribution is right up my screaming guitar action alley. a=mh2 has that whole raga drone thing going on. the sunbeam reissue apparently includes a whole unissued album of stuff that was supposed to be their first album but wasn't for some reason.

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

i got this the other day and it's cool if you like spider's brand of oldetyme blues/rock.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270417306009&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&salenotsupported

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 20:35 (sixteen years ago)

aha yes I'm going to assume everything is a reissue from now on and look very very very closely at it.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 6 July 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

i like the notes that come with the spider john album:

cost notes:

15 reels of tape: $120.00

mastering at sound 80: 120.00

1000 pressings in sleeves, delivered to Mpls. less than 600.00

1000 jackets from Chicago Album Specialties: 120.00

rubber stamps, revivifying liquids, curling vapours, high living, wear and tear, phone calls less than 150.00

total for 1000 copies in our house: $1110.00

We sell them for $2.00 wholesale to stores in bunches. We sell them for $2.50 to everybody else (everyone helps pay everyone's postage). If you would like to buy a stack and become a bigtime record distributor our address is:

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

the sunbeam reissue apparently includes a whole unissued album of stuff that was supposed to be their first album but wasn't for some reason.

Ah okay Scott, maybe that is this Blues thing that gets mentioned here:

Andy Clark and Mick Hutchinson recorded four semi-legendary LPs of drug/scatter/raga-blues between 1969 and 1971. The first album – Blues – wasn’t released until a long time after the band had split up. Its been described elsewhere as "...a great record of swinging, pumping blues that fits the pattern of early British blues rock, when bands like Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack or Groundhogs started to explore their own new sounds, leaving behind the limitations of the traditional blues form". There is some fine guitar work on this – as on all Clark Hutchinson albums – but the standout track for me has to be "The Summer Seems Longer". Nearly ten minutes long, this slow, reflective blues song looks back at a lost time and hints at the sad, troubled mood which dominated their last recording, Gestalt.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Monday, 6 July 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:07 (sixteen years ago)

Cletic Forst

Oh, and a Rock Goddess LP. Looks a bit like Girlschool. Haven't played it yet though. Waiting for my new needle.

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:10 (sixteen years ago)

I bought a used copy of Amon Duul II's "Yeti"...

i saw this in the racks also! the cover looked a little too pristine for it to not be a reissue- re-printed covers have a certain photocopied look to them sometimes and it kinda gives it away. i avoided buying a copy of goblin's phenomena ost for similar reasons

psychgawsple, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

lol they have that Rock Goddess in one of my local charity shops, I nearly bought it because it looked a bit like Girlschool! I downloaded it tho and well, it's OK but it's no Girlschool. 99p though can't complain

xpost

Colonel Poo, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

Ha. In the end, I couldn't say not to the song titles 'Satisfied Then Crucified' and 'Heavy Metal Rock n Roll'

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

Some other cheapo bits and pieces I've found recently:

Mike Pinera - Isla Dunno who this dude is, but it was sealed and on Capricorn. Much later than Captain Beyond etc though.
Lou Reed - The Bells
Hiroshima s/t
(like Dorothy Ashby goes disco)
Alice Cooper - Easy Action
V/A - Time Between
(bit suspect-looking Byrds tribute with the Chills, Thin White Rope, Dinosaur Jr, Richard Thompson, Giant Sand)
Rare Earth - Ecology
Yma Sumac - Legend of the Sun Virgin
Tangerine Dream - Thief
Stravinsky - The Fire bird
(The Rest Is Just Noise homework)
V/A Deep Heat 1989 2LP house comp with Stakker Humanoid, Kevin Saunderson, Adeva amongst some possible dross

gnarly sceptre, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

I know... I think I wanted to be fooled... it looked way to good to be an older issue. I just did a quick glance for any barcodes or recent dates and convinced myself that for $20 it was old. Opened up it's *super* obvious. Sleeve printed on clean white cardboard, super pristine inner labels, etc. I felt like a fool when I pulled it out.

I haven't seen Goblin reissues that weren't clearly out on Dagored or something like that... was the one you saw also taped up? I feel like that is always kinda meant to give the illusion that the record is something special.

Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 6 July 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

amoeba's LP-taping is like the MOST ANNOYING THING EVER

69, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

with regards to the logistics of removal, let alone sneaky reissues

69, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

wait, don't they let you open it before you buy it??? and can't you return it?

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

i wanted a record in a store and it was taped shut and i went to the dude and said: can you open this, please? and he said: i'm sure it's in great shape. ???????? uh, i'll be the judge of that. so finally he opened it. and it was fine. but i ain't gonna pay more than a couple of bucks for anything not sealed unless i can look at the whole package.

scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, its just annoying because the amoeba LPs are mummified w tape. i understand its a big store, and security can only do so much to supervise customers, but having to go find a clerk to help you look at every used LP you want can be annoying, especially when you want a bunch of em...

69, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

yeesh, that sounds like a friggin' nightmare.
