"the charade" is a miracle of a song, agreed

covidiot wind, blowin every time you lift your mask (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 21:27 (five years ago)

Another life is sublime, beautiful, tragic, just one of his all time best songs. Incredible. Esp that fractured vocal. Black messiah makes a lot if brown sugar sound tentative, and voodoo sound over ambitious, puffed up, and like he was trying on soneone else's clothes on. This album is when he really started showing himself.

candyman, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 21:58 (five years ago)

I don't care about 2020 opinions, I care about hearing this viny-only vanity project by some Italian keyboardist with D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Chris Dave.

it'll show up eventually

covidiot wind, blowin every time you lift your mask (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 22:54 (five years ago)

I'm surprised it hasn't already!

Ok, apparently he's not Italian. But almost certainly independently wealthy.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 14 October 2020 23:01 (five years ago)

all the descriptions of it sounded terrible tbh

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 14 October 2020 23:15 (five years ago)

the slingbaum album is indeed easy to find on soulseek fyi

ufo, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 23:28 (five years ago)

xp Karl--heck yeah, great point: haven't listened to it in a while, but yeah, the way the drum machine and synth and brief bass harmonics and guitar and vox all 'wake up' in those 25 seconds is so seemingly effortlessly exciting

And also hard agree that, while having admitted it's been a minute, Black Messiah has likewise def become my go-to D in recent years

call mr zbow that's my name that name again is mr zbow (Craig D.), Thursday, 15 October 2020 02:17 (five years ago)

I could barely even tell D was on that Slingbaum track. I think I remember one song seemed okay

bunny slopes, Thursday, 15 October 2020 03:00 (five years ago)

Another Life does this wonderful thing where it keeps switching from tentative to confident, and has these chords that are like an unsure ascent, and the infinite D'Angelos harmonise in the most bewitching and unexpected ways. It really sends me.

whoa

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 February 2021 21:00 (five years ago)

Ah, man. This was from a while back, right? Any links to a download floating out there?

Just played Black Messiah for the first time in eons, actually.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 5 February 2021 21:58 (five years ago)

I need to write down the tracklisting. I could see d'angelo as a DJ. God knows he has the time in between albums!

candyman, Friday, 5 February 2021 22:16 (five years ago)

Good thing he knows "the secret to beating writer's block".

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 February 2021 22:22 (five years ago)

Actually I have no trouble believing that he has no issue with writer's block, he just takes forever laboring over a record and deciding he wants to release something.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 5 February 2021 22:23 (five years ago)

Wonder what his discogs username is.

candyman, Friday, 5 February 2021 22:47 (five years ago)

questlove has said that he's a perfectionist and a tinkerer who never thinks his music is good enough to be released

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Friday, 5 February 2021 22:48 (five years ago)

and yet Black Messiah sounds the opposite of laboured; the influences and references are all upfront, but it still sounds fresh, spontaneous, rough almost. certainly not overproduced.

mahb, Friday, 5 February 2021 23:33 (five years ago)

i was at the press event where they played black messiah for the first time ever and i remember questlove saying that they essentially had to wrest control over the music from d’angelo during a very small window of time in order to get a track list done and the album released, or else he never would’ve put anything out. but it’s not like the songs weren’t done

J0rdan S., Saturday, 6 February 2021 02:03 (five years ago)

Hed never over produce his music. He likes early 70s stuff too much to do that I think his tinkering is more in the Coppola sense. There will always be something else he thinks of.

candyman, Saturday, 6 February 2021 04:58 (five years ago)

over under finished

it's just words

Scampi reggae party (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 February 2021 05:01 (five years ago)

also thinking about the record as a finish is just not

Scampi reggae party (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 February 2021 05:02 (five years ago)

think he's just kinda neurotic basically

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 6 February 2021 05:33 (five years ago)

unprofessional to diagnose on the fly imo

Scampi reggae party (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 6 February 2021 05:34 (five years ago)

Hopefully he has a therapist but I doubt it somehow

to demonstrate how long stuff can gestate with him, questlove leaked this version of "really love" all the way back in 2007 and while it's missing a few details that were added to the final version, it's not like it was radically reworked or anything since then

ufo, Thursday, 18 February 2021 12:10 (five years ago)

fishbone - subliminal fascism

feel that D'Angelo's Fishbone love doesn't get enough attention

Ray Cooney as "Crotch" (stevie), Thursday, 18 February 2021 13:53 (five years ago)

He’s doing a Verzuz on the 27th!

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:07 (five years ago)

exciting. i predict it wont be maxwell or anyone like that, it will just be a friendly kind of battle with his usual buddies like questlove, q-tip, etc.

candyman, Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:10 (five years ago)

he should challenge 20 different artists to pit their best song against cuts from the three albums and casually obliterate them

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:14 (five years ago)

well that seems like that's the plan right? it's "vs friends"

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:15 (five years ago)

not sure what the actual plan is, seems like it'll be more of a performance than past verzuz events

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:16 (five years ago)

it's hardly a true analogue but the only contemporary artist i can think of off the top of my head that i'd like to hear go song-for-song against d'angelo song for song is usher

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:17 (five years ago)

yeah it's at the Apollo so i think it'll be more of a performance than just pressing play and awkwardly dancing to it or whatever the fuck artists do at these things now (sorry haven't watched a Verzuz in months)

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:19 (five years ago)

xp i'd like to see d'angelo vs. badu, but she already did a charming edition with jill scott

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:20 (five years ago)

(this is the part where i say that i saw d'angelo at the apollo during the black messiah tour and that it was a top 25 concert for sure)

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:21 (five years ago)

brandy vs dangelo would have also been a fucking knockout

That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:22 (five years ago)

usher would be kinda unexpected but actually kind of cool and interesting. trying to think what dangelo would come back with when usher plays OMG though. trying to picture him singing along with "honey got some boobies like wow, oh wow".

id have loved a badu vs dangelo battle. partly to see what they picked, but really just to see what they talk about to each other.

"not sure what the actual plan is, seems like it'll be more of a performance than past verzuz events"

def hope so.

candyman, Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:30 (five years ago)

(this is the part where i say that i saw d'angelo at the apollo during the black messiah tour and that it was a top 25 concert for sure)

saw him at the (Hammersmith) Apollo on that tour and it's easily Top 3 for me

Ray Cooney as "Crotch" (stevie), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:45 (five years ago)

yeah i saw him at the playstation theater (rip) and it was totally amazing (chris dave, jesse johnson, pino palladino, can't really top that)

tiwa-nty one savage (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:56 (five years ago)

I saw the First Ave show and even though it started real late, was so crowded that you didn't even want to think about using the bathroom for fear of never being able to get back to your spot, the sound was way too loud & noisy, and my knees never hurt so much...it was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen and I'm so glad I did.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:58 (five years ago)

I know everyone was hoping for the Prince sighting/sit-in but also I think everyone knew deep down it was never going to happen. He would never do what everyone expected/wanted, if nothing else.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 18 February 2021 15:59 (five years ago)

prince was darth vader to dangelo's luke.

he would prob have preferred to slice dangelos arm off.

:)

candyman, Thursday, 18 February 2021 16:24 (five years ago)

he just took the stage for his verzuz. on instagram and apple music

maura, Sunday, 28 February 2021 03:06 (five years ago)

little johnny juul (voodoo chili), Sunday, 28 February 2021 03:09 (five years ago)

tuned into this when it was supposed to began but he was late so i tuned out.. but looking at the tracklist that he went through, oh my god this looks amazing
