The employees at 7/11 who consistently chin-strapped knew very well where their mask was.

i had a guy at uhaul present a disgusting new variation that i hadnt seen before: mask down, covering only the bottom lip, upper lip over the mask, as if sucking on the top of the mask. Horrifying.

Like the 'wearing a mask alone in a car' thing, I think it's adequately explained by people being forgetful and distracted (as people tend to be).
Some ppl do this b/c they don't want to touch their face to remove it until they've had a chance to wash their hands. I used to do it myself -- but now that we know surfaces aren't as likely to be a source of transmission, I'm ok relying on hand sanitizer alone. (I knew I was probably being somewhat overcautious before, but I figured better to err on that side.)

I saw three dicknoses in the hospital today; one elderly patient and two nurses. Only one of those gets the benefit of any doubt over knowing how to wear a mask.
― here we go, ten in a rona (onimo), Thursday, 8 October 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link
it's a form of checklisting. you're told you have to wear them to be in public places. you don't want to but you don't wanna get kicked out. so you half-ass it, knowing that fatigued employees are less likely to ask you to mask up or leave if you at least have it on.
it's kind of like your parents telling you that you have to finish your book report before you go to the movies, so you write a shitty three sentences that say "The grapes of wrath are about wrathful grapes." and go out anyway.
― LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Thursday, 8 October 2020 17:47 (three years ago) link
OTM. And its perfect for passive-aggressive deniability if anyone presses you on it: "oh i didnt realize it just slipped down like that, whoops"
i nicely asked the mask-sucking employee at uhaul that i dealt with to pull his mask up and he was astonished that i asked, grudgingly gave himself a dicknose, and then was doubly astonished i asked him to please pull it up all the way. ime dicknosers are generally just betting that other people will be too shy to ask them about it.

I'm trying to parse what this means. I don't disagree that Gen Xers are just as bad about mask wearing as boomers, but I'm baffled about what Green Day and Nirvana have to do with it

We had a contractor over at our house (someone I didn't want to piss off) whose nose was exposed. I thought of a way to tactfully address it -- offered him a different mask ("If you need one, I know it's hot outside," etc.). He was cool about it; pulled up his for the remainder of the visit, I think it was a case of genuine forgetfulness.

Lennon's birthday today; no way he'd NOT be one. I mean if you just look at the lyrics on Sometime In New York City, he's a classic case. Yoko too, possibly.
"Free the prisoners, jail the judgesFree all the prisoners everywhereAll they want is truth and justiceAll they need is love and care"
"We are born in a prisonRaised in a prisonSent to a prison called schoolWe cry in a prisonWe love in a prisonWe dream in a prison like fools"
"There may be not much differenceBetween Marilyn Monroe and Lenny BruceWe check their coffins.we're all water"

those lyrics are just generic leftist sloganeering; just because current conspiracy theorists use anti-authoritarian rhetoric doesn't mean everyone else who does is simpatico
Yoko Ono, who is alive, had someone edit vintage clips of Lennon to give out a stay-safe-during-covid message (my day is worse for having found this out).

from the aquarium drunkard interview with probable trumpist tobin sprout:
Tobin Sprout: Right, the masks. I was on the board of the historical society, and we had to wear the masks for an hour and a half for this meeting. It was devastating and claustrophobic. We were far enough apart that we could take the masks off if we wanted to, and then there were a couple of people that didn’t want to, so everybody had to wear them. It is what it is, I guess.
"it is what it is"

I went to a podiatrist earlier today; she wore an N95 mask, and seemed like a cool enough person (I had seen her once before)... but when the conversation turned to masks, she turned out to be something of a covid "truther." It was kind of bizarre/unsettling.

It should be a shock that FIve Finger Death Punch just released an anti-mask video:
The video opens with a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures," before launching into the action. The clip, shot in Los Angeles, starts with a Nancy Pelosi-esque political figure praising mask-wearers for being "compliant," even presenting them with a button displaying the Communist sickle emblem. There's also nods to zombies hoarding toilet paper and a work camp for the "People's Republic of America."
But eventually an uprising takes place with people ripping off their masks to head into a violent battle carrying American flags in pursuit of the female leader.
There are plenty of other symbolic nods throughout the video, including "The Great Awakening" flashing during a newscast, which is a reference to QAnon. There are also black-clad figures on leashes that are held by the female leader. They break free to start destroying property, which appears to be a reference to Antifa.
