Deftones: Underrated?

it's wild that this is this good but still might not even end up in my top 5 deftones albums

i think it's shot up into my top three already but who can say

it's certainly the best-sounding deftones record since the s/t

Really loving this on first listen.

I can't shake the feeling that someone lopped off the actual opening track, but otherwise the sequencing is great. "Ohms" is a splendid closer.

occurred to me this is the most well-integrated the different sides of their sound have ever been. there's never a moment where the riffs clear out for something purely meditative and gorgeous like "sextape," "entombed" etc. it's just crushing and beautiful in countervailing waves, all the time. think they had a real breakthrough here

"urantia" is the best

i forget about the synth fantasia at the end of "pompeji" every time and it's always like i tripped into a black hole

“Pompeji” into “This Link is Dead” is great.

This is such a great album, I've ended up listening to it all day. One thing that stands out is that a lot of the vocal melodies (e.g. 'Urantia') seem atypically bright and hooky for them.

my honeymoon period with this one is giving me the exact feeling koi no yokan did at the time: they put out another masterpiece

today i think "headless" is the best song. so much of this record sounds like their entire discography enfolded into single songs, and this one kinda migrates from the s/t to saturday night wrist in the verse/chorus and then slips backward into an odd time signature like all of my favorite stuff on diamond eyes

I see Chino is still croaking into every first word whenever he sings a clean part. That pained vocal fry thing is far too grating for me to deal with even if the guitar tones and the yelling sound as good as ever

xxp.there was a response chino had during an interview for this album where he danced around the “both sides” issue that had me wary of his views.

From the vulture interview this year:

No matter who you are or what you do, I think most people deal with that dichotomy in life, having days of feeling like you’re your better self than others. I’m a work-in-progress. But yes, the song is acknowledging that. But it’s also about being frustrated with the times and how everybody, not to be so literal, because it’s not political or whatever — but it’s like everybody’s right. Everybody has an opinion. Everybody’s barking at each other through the fence, and it drives me fucking mad. I don’t want to have to pick a side. I want balance. I want to be able to make a decision that doesn’t have to go along with any one side of any argument. You know what I mean? That song actually also speaks to that, I guess, whatever. Everything is so polarized.
