christ

rascal clobber (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 17:18 (five years ago)

Holy shit, I started laughing before he even started singing. He sounds extremely constipated. This is an annoyingly huge chorus and ubiquity away from taking "What's Up" off the Mount Rushmore of musical shit.

James Gandolfini the Grey (PBKR), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 19:20 (five years ago)

How is this not a meme by now?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 19:36 (five years ago)

it does have that inscrutable, Tommy Wiseauian quality to it

omfg this is astonishingly awful

can't get over his look in the video, it's p hot and i wish i had the hair or the incredibly close shaving skills to pull it off, and at the same time it seems pretty blatantly clear that the video director figured "this song is godawful but if i play my cards right, i could market this clip to some spoof film that wants to parody Val Kilmer's performance in The Doors"

voted for the Holocaust line just over the homophobia line. even WITHOUT those it's a trainwreck --- come back, Silverchair and Noel Gallagher, all is forgiven.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 September 2020 12:20 (five years ago)

seriously I think the only recent-ish ILM discovery i could compare this to is when Neanderthal made us all listen to "Planes"

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 September 2020 12:22 (five years ago)

Please what is "Planes"?

chap, Thursday, 17 September 2020 13:52 (five years ago)

I've always kind of loved You Get What You Give but The Truth is the awkwardness of the closing "rap" in the former blown up to song length.

James Gandolfini the Grey (PBKR), Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:01 (five years ago)

Sensual aircraft, iirc.

cuz the things that make you happy make me saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaæääd

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:20 (five years ago)

Current fave is "let it ring all month." All *month*? That's, like, 30 days of truth ringing! (but no more)

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:27 (five years ago)

most wtf lyric in Jefferson Airplane's "Planes"

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:37 (five years ago)

I don't think I am mentally capable of listening to this song and watching the video at the same time. Too powerful.

Simon H., Thursday, 17 September 2020 14:57 (five years ago)

i'm gonna need to know which month before i vote.

andrew m., Thursday, 17 September 2020 15:00 (five years ago)

honestly the lyrics are dreadful but the vocal is much, much worse

Simon H., Thursday, 17 September 2020 15:05 (five years ago)

This is a great Thurston Moore parody.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 17 September 2020 16:42 (five years ago)

The delivery on 'I ask the questions but you are the riddl-aw' is underappreciated ITT

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Thursday, 17 September 2020 23:36 (five years ago)

He was just a little boy and he sat there in his school

And that boy grew up to be... Gregg Alexander. His love of planes become love of truth.

Michigan Rain rocks.

I_Got_Loaded, Friday, 18 September 2020 04:03 (five years ago)

idk, right now "*whispering* You don't wanna know" is doing such a succinct job of summing all of it up.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 18 September 2020 04:13 (five years ago)

On third watch I think the way he repeats 'ditch' may be the most cringeworthy bit.

chap, Friday, 18 September 2020 11:28 (five years ago)

Doctor Casino at 8:20 17 Sep 20

it seems pretty blatantly clear that the video director figured "this song is godawful but if i play my cards right, i could market this clip to some spoof film that wants to parody Val Kilmer's performance in The Doors"
or ted levine's performance in silence of the lambs.

peace, man, Friday, 18 September 2020 12:08 (five years ago)

Cos when the night is falling
You cannot see the ditch
Ditch

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 18 September 2020 13:32 (five years ago)

the weird thing about this song is that it sounds like an outrageous parody, but one that isn't even funny.
how did such a terrible thing get written, performed and released without everyone involved saying "you know what, this really isnt working"?

好 now 烧烤 (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 18 September 2020 13:41 (five years ago)

voted for "Cause the things that make you happy make me me seeeeaaaaaaagghhhhd" bc the way he sings that last word is like nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying

na (NA), Friday, 18 September 2020 13:48 (five years ago)

did they not have multi-take editing back then or?

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 18 September 2020 13:50 (five years ago)

the weird thing is this song is not that far away from "you get what you give" which i love

na (NA), Friday, 18 September 2020 13:53 (five years ago)

it really isn't. there are loads of lyrical similarities. luckily he worked out how to sing a bit better by 1998

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 18 September 2020 13:57 (five years ago)

This is better than You Get What You Give - less boring.

chap, Friday, 18 September 2020 14:10 (five years ago)

feel like i can divide my life pretty cleanly into before i heard "the truth" and after

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 18 September 2020 14:52 (five years ago)

Enjoying the completely superfluous Danielle Brisebois backing vocal that pops up on the 2nd chorus

Reckon I might be able to work up the courage to listen to "Smoking In Bed" next week

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 18 September 2020 15:28 (five years ago)

This is better than You Get What You Give - less boring.

"This year's Thanksgiving? It was alright, I guess. Last year's was more memorable because I got food poisoning."

This is so fag v hitler v slow ride.

James Gandolfini the Grey (PBKR), Saturday, 19 September 2020 02:28 (five years ago)

Wow, the look on my wife's face when slow ride kicked in changed from general annoyance with being asked to watch this travesty to revulsion bordering on horror.

everything deserving got a vote. you love to see it.

Simon H., Sunday, 20 September 2020 02:20 (five years ago)

I saw my wife was logged into the joint Spotify at home, so I remotely played this song from my phone as a fun gift for her

regrettably due to poor 4g reception it took a while to load, by which time she had joined a work-related zoom call and couldn't figure out how to make it stop blaring out of her work computer

Dadjokke (Sgt. Biscuits), Thursday, 1 October 2020 16:58 (five years ago)

oh excellent

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 October 2020 17:03 (five years ago)

first three songs actually all end in really weird ways. "I Hope I Didn't Just Give Away the Ending" he's doing what, an Isaac Brock impression? and yes the lyrics are all wtf. he's such a weirdo. taking all these great songs and stepping on them. I mean "Jehovah Made This Whole Joint For You" is such a great power pop song and then it ends "it's so wonderful...it makes me feel like crying...crying...crying...DYING...DYING!!!" and the last song was "I Don't Want To Die Anymore"!! this dude really was one of a kind.

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 January 2026 04:00 (four months ago)

never listened to this album before and wow... this is nuts. almost makes The Truth sound normal in a way. just from "Mother..." and "I Hope I Didn't Just Give Away the Ending," this is like someone skipped straight past the tidal wave smash debut, to the coke-fueled maximalist personal idiosyncracy version of a New Jersey. it's wrapped up in an airy prettiness you usually don't encounter on those types of albums but there's NO filter on this guy!

Hiphoptimus Rhyme (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 21 January 2026 12:57 (four months ago)

obviously wouldn't have gotten this the first time around but the chorus on "Mother" is just Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough"....here comes the lawsuit baby!!!

frogbs, Wednesday, 21 January 2026 14:26 (four months ago)

the New Radicals album connected with me in a bizarre way that no other album could the year it came out, was 18 graduating high school and in my feels and for some reason this weird fuckin collection of songs just did it for me.

I tried to cover "I Hope I Didn't Just Give Away the Ending" once and then kept hemming and hawing as to *how* to do the first part where he's basically slurring consonants over jazz chords

Bertolt Blecch (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 21 January 2026 18:11 (four months ago)

i really want to see the Sony/Epic promo packet that came with this CD—what market was it aimed at?

Gentler Death Squads Please (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 21 January 2026 18:57 (four months ago)

also, how did he get away with including no fewer than five songs from his previous album, three of which are the EXACT SAME RECORDINGS from his first album, on A & M no less not some self-released thing

Gentler Death Squads Please (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 21 January 2026 19:03 (four months ago)

You're talking about his second solo album, not MYBBT, right?

This Thrilling Saga is the Top Show on Netflix Right Now (President Keyes), Wednesday, 21 January 2026 19:07 (four months ago)

oh I see you guys were talking about the New Radicals album

Gentler Death Squads Please (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 21 January 2026 19:10 (four months ago)

yeah I was talking about Intoxifornication

Gentler Death Squads Please (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 21 January 2026 19:10 (four months ago)

as a "You Get What You Give" hater this is sweet bias confirmation
