Think I'll vote for Joni Mitchell or Aretha Franklin...oh, wait...

banjoboy, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:14 (five years ago)

Geir would hate most of these.

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:18 (five years ago)

yeah 51-100 has several of my favorite records on it whereas 1-50 doesn't really have any

ciderpress, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:20 (five years ago)

I do really like the Fishmans obsession on RYM. Long Season will be in the top 10 one day.

its one of the most endearing parts of that site. amusingly I've been seeing something similar happen with Kyuusai no Gihou, it had like 15 ratings when I 5-starred it and now it's bold with over 800

frogbs, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:31 (five years ago)

don't remember Geir being into Euro pop tbh

I must be misremembering then. I thought his whole shtick was that melody rules supreme and that all other musical parameters must subside into the background in order to let the melodic line sing in all of its unvarnished purity.

hey, trust the fungus! (pomenitul), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:32 (five years ago)

As for this poll, eh, I can't decide. TPAB vs Loveless vs Abbey Road

imago, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:41 (five years ago)

Yeah, he was decidedly not a stan for Metallica, Slint, and GYBE.xp

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:41 (five years ago)

Oh yeah Spiderland is up there too

imago, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:42 (five years ago)

wait a minute, jazz exists????

davey, Tuesday, 15 September 2020 21:54 (five years ago)

kind of blue

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:03 (five years ago)

Endtroducing maybe the only one I was at all surprised to see

I listened to it a lot when I was also listening to a lot of these a lot so it didn't surprise me.

Thinking of voting for KC just bc it's good to see them on a list. My joke about Close to the Edge might actually apply with this list.

Mingus

Oh, OK, it was at 68.

Ugh, I like almost all of these, but they're super boring as an aggregate

Every body is interested in pigeons (jmm), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 22:46 (five years ago)

Checked the top 200 for female artists. There’s only three albums in there:

154 Joanna Newsom Ys
158 Bjork Post
163 Joni Mitchell Blue

I guess Portishead, Fleetwood Mac partially count too since they have a frontwoman.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 14:59 (five years ago)

56 Bjork Homogenic
69 Kate Bush Hounds of Love
79 Bjork Vespertine
81 The Jimi Hendrix Experience Electric Ladyland (mentions ladys in the title)

frogbs, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 15:05 (five years ago)

RS's list is more progressive in some ways.

hey, trust the fungus! (pomenitul), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 15:18 (five years ago)

but, more significantly: The Queen Is Dead

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 15:20 (five years ago)

I enjoy a lot of this list but ultimately voted for the last one on the list, 'Ride the Lightning.'

Loveless I guess

gman59, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 15:54 (five years ago)

I guess, if I'm being honest, Dark Side of the Moon is my boring pick. It's been a reliable album this year.

Every body is interested in pigeons (jmm), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 16:00 (five years ago)

gut instinct went with pet sounds, cause i've loved re-learning all those songs on the piano recently

i got a homogenic björk wine farmer permabanned (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 16:08 (five years ago)

They're inderectly responsible for a whole lot of generic "cresndocore" post-rock but Lift Your Skinny Fists holds up for me, beautiful album

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 16 September 2020 16:31 (five years ago)

more xs and ps

but, more significantly: _The Queen Is Dead_

see, this kind of disjointed post is why I should stay out of this so-not-for-me thread. now people might think I voted for The Smiths. no, I didn’t and wouldn’t. #iabstain

voting for the album that features the most ODB verses

turn the jawhatthefuckever on (One Eye Open), Monday, 21 September 2020 13:54 (five years ago)

every album on this list that I like, I like a little less because of it appearing on this list

assert (MatthewK), Monday, 21 September 2020 14:05 (five years ago)

lol is it because it's RYM or because seeing them all huddled so close together is too normative for comfort?

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:10 (five years ago)

Four Beatles albums sounds ok but four Radiohead albums? That is ridiculous. And there isn't even their by far best album - Amnesiac - there!

walking towards the sun since 2007 (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 21 September 2020 14:14 (five years ago)

It's my second fave but its omission is indeed unforgivable.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:14 (five years ago)

This list looks like it was made by the Radiohead forum I used to post on in 2000/2001 (GYBE, Sigur Ros, Boards of Canada etc.)

cajunsunday, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:28 (five years ago)

Whatever happened to Melissa btw? She was the ultimate RH stan back in ILM's early days, fighting the good fight.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:31 (five years ago)

It's sort of what I like about it? There's no real pretence of objectivity. It just looks like someone's favourite albums from their collection. If you really like Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson, there's a good chance you'll like the whole list. Not everything has to be Pitchfork.xp

The nexus of the crisis and the origin of storms (Sund4r), Monday, 21 September 2020 14:33 (five years ago)

yeah the "music guys" I used to hang out with in college (circa 2006 or so) would've made pretty much this exact same list back then, mins Kanye and Kendrick. so many of these albums I heard for the first time through the same people. at the time the RYM list was pretty much all 60s and 70s classic rock + Radiohead.

in high school a lot of my classmates were big into classic rock stuff like Floyd, Zep, and the Beatles...music our parents and teachers liked. I guess for the current generation of teenagers that would be Radiohead? maybe why they got 3 albums in the top 10

frogbs, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:43 (five years ago)

There's maybe like 3-4 albums on this list I don't really care for so clearly it's doing a good job of catering to my demographic.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:53 (five years ago)

It's still astonishingly boring, though.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:53 (five years ago)

Let's also poll and moan about ... Acclaimed Music's Top 50 Albums of All Time

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:16 (five years ago)

It's almost as if their star-rating methodology has nothing to do with designing a fun listicle that can logically compare to ones compiled by journalists.

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:41 (five years ago)

Master Of Puppets and Red are the ones I listen to most lately.

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:43 (five years ago)

Is there an updated Rolling Stone albums canon that I missed?

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:49 (five years ago)

The 2003 list was revised in 2012 and a brand new one is apparently imminent.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:54 (five years ago)

We'll be polling it as soon as it drops, of course.

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:54 (five years ago)

Before it drops as ILM is that hip

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:55 (five years ago)

:)

pomenitul, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:56 (five years ago)

pro tip just poll this one again

how do i shot moon? (Noodle Vague), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:58 (five years ago)

remember NME used to produce a list but deliberately out in a troll entry like Andrew WK to annoy readers/clickbait

Oor Neechy, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:01 (five years ago)

um Andrew WK has 3 albums better than the majority of this list

frogbs, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:02 (five years ago)

Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets are about equally good and I'm happy the results reflect this.

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 16:04 (five years ago)

three weeks pass...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 14 October 2020 00:01 (five years ago)

also, i'm down to do a mashup cover of "money" and "c.r.e.a.m." if you are.

Man, every good idea's been taken.
