"It’s Time to Take Enya Seriously"(?)

Maybe a teaser headline format like this shouldn't bug me, but it does - b/c it implies "we" haven't been taking her seriously, and my immediate response is - "That's on you, dude"

Also, I feel like the “it’s time to take Enya seriously” thing is like five years too late at this point

yeah, agree (maybe it's an excellent podcast, idk)

rob, Friday, 11 September 2020 18:38 (three years ago) link

As usual, writers labor under the burden of headlines. I'll bet the writer wanted to write a long essay on Enya's continuing relevance -- which is fine! Enya deserves longform criticism (Brad reviewed her album a few years ago). Teaching adults between 18-25 prepares you for the gaps in their education. It's not a big deal.

Imagine how many gaps could be filled if 18-25 year olds weren't writing the bulk of music writing today

adults between 18-25

Lately I feel like no one is an adult until 30. (40, if I'm feeling particularly uncharitable. Or until you've buried a parent.)

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 11 September 2020 19:02 (three years ago) link

I don't consider anyone an adult until they're dead, and I'm dead too.

things that make you an adult imo: paying off a mortgage over 15+ years, surgery, death of a parent, colonoscopy, writing a will

Retrospective Pod review today. Good stuff.

Agreed, Pom. I've mostly listened to the Pod demos for the past several years, should go listen to the actual record again soon...it's one of my favorites!

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 September 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

It is good, but all the Nirvana/“impact on Cobain” stuff... a bit much.

Can Butch Vig not do "dynamimcs"? (morrisp), Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

(I recognize a lot of ppl care about Nirvana, but I’m not sure why that angle needs to be pushed so hard.)

Can Butch Vig not do "dynamimcs"? (morrisp), Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:11 (three years ago) link

Maybe, but as a 35 year-old Nirvana stan who worshipped Cobain in his tweens, it jives with, and expands on my limited understanding of what was going on musically in 1990.

pomenitul, Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:16 (three years ago) link

I recoil from the NIRVANA CHANGED ROCK, MAN cliche, but I don't see the problem in this example.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

The two paragraphs about Cobain the middle are fine; I don’t think it needed to circle back at the end. (Even if it were talking about influence on my favorite all-time artist, I’d probably feel the same way.)

Can Butch Vig not do "dynamimcs"? (morrisp), Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:29 (three years ago) link

(But I acknowledge the essay takes “influence” as a central concern, so I guess it makes sense from that perspective.)

Can Butch Vig not do "dynamimcs"? (morrisp), Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:31 (three years ago) link

I found that part a bit difficult to swallow because it seems to be saying "you thought the first couple Pixies albums were a huge influence on Nirvana, but Pod is an even bigger influence, and just happens to feature Kim Deal, also of tbe Pixies."

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 13 September 2020 19:56 (three years ago) link

I read it more as 'you thought the first couple of Black Francis-helmed Pixies albums were a huge influence on Nirvana, but Kim Deal's songwriting and Pod in particular are even bigger influences'.

Apart from forcing me to re-listen to what is for me the Breeders' weakest album, the review adds historical context.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 September 2020 20:08 (three years ago) link

6 of one half...

Like sussing out how much Black Francis vs Kim Deal is in "Lithium" is kind of a self-defeating exercise.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 13 September 2020 20:09 (three years ago) link

lol I remember the Pixies influence on Nirvana being a thing mentioned often at the time--as if the Pixies were some obscure '60s group and not a going concern back then

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 14 September 2020 00:27 (three years ago) link

They were obscure compared to Nirvana.

When I first heard Nevermind, my immediate thought was oh here's a band that is blantantly ripping off Pixies. There's obviously a lot more there too, but that was my first impression.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 14 September 2020 02:23 (three years ago) link

Pitchfork gave a lot of love to this Lomelda album recently and I think i agree with them. Haven't heard much on here about it but it's been really hitting the spot lately.

more Boston than the Pixies but the quiet/loud/quiet thing was def there.

it's funny when you first hear things that end up being iconic, saw the Strokes open for Doves in a small club and thought they were doing a Smiths ripoff
