“Umuhle Ntombi” is the only other track I had checked out. It’s good, but I prefer “Luthando”.

Listening to his other tracks featuring Sandile now: “Buya” is all about the last two minutes when the harmonies really kick in, “Intokazi Yohlobo” is beautiful triphoppy amapiano, that beat is great. “Noyana” from *the other* album Vico da S released this year is also very very nice (wow at that vibraphone break), and “Ndod’mnyama”, Sandile’s Vico-produced solo single, is weirdly mixed but those muffled dubby handclaps remind me of the Peech Boys’ “Don’t Make Me Wait” (speaking of tracks with unexpected rock guitar!) and now I’m very happy.

btw Sandile is also on a track on one of the two (sigh) excellent amapiano albums released this year so far by Future Majestics.

It really is a shame how much good music is being released on a weekly basis in South Africa alone.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Thursday, 27 August 2020 20:59 (five years ago)

^^to be clear, this is not meant to be snarky, all this (potentially) great music that is being released within the various SA house genres is a blessing, but it’s quite literally impossible to keep up with

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Friday, 28 August 2020 16:24 (five years ago)

Update: just noticed Vico Da Sporo dropped *yet another album* over the weekend, 81 minutes, 17 tracks, 6 of which with Sandile. Needless to say, I haven’t had time to listen to it yet. Where does he find it?

Anyone in need of some Simmy?

Okay, I will post the other Samthing track on CN’s new album too. There’s less of him this time, but I’ll take every bit of Samthing I can get and Nyovest is less intrusive on his own track here:

Cassper Nyovest ft. Samthing Soweto • Ngwanesu

huh, that guy also has Anthony Hamilton on this album! Unfamiliar with him.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:30 (five years ago)

he’s one of SA’s biggest rappers

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:42 (five years ago)

now that you mention it, i think i remember ngud

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 17:49 (five years ago)

he’s also on amapiano hits like Kabza’s “Phoyisa” and “Sponono”, and “Monate Mpolaye” by DJ Sumbody.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 16 September 2020 07:39 (five years ago)

three weeks pass...

Sun-El has a credit on this track on the new Black Motion album - I'm posting the performance on music show Live Amp on SA television:

(there are also tracks with Simmy, Ami Faku, Tresor and Nokwazi on the album btw, just to name a few)

Mlindo the Vocalist on "Yaz Abantu" is absolutely fucking killing me right now, issa vibe

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 01:07 (five years ago)

anybody know who the other guy (not Gwamba) providing vocals on this track is?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 01:09 (five years ago)

that’s wonderful. according to the YouTube comments the other singer is Masiano. he is also on “Yekela”, that Mlindo track from earlier this year (it’s somewhere upthread).

Gwamba himself is from Malawi btw.

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 07:19 (five years ago)

found all of five more credited features on Spotify, of which I like this recent one the best:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m65hr9-jbC4
Meez ft. Masiano & DJ Mdix • Syavana

(there are a few more tracks on YouTube, with Meez and others. he’s also a producer, this is a rap track he did, with himself on the hook.)

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 08:37 (five years ago)

ha, this just in: the new DJ Mdix features Mlindo and is produced by... Masiano:

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 08:47 (five years ago)

But is any of this on a par with “Yaz Abantu”? The answer, I would think, is no, so please to proceed accordingly.

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 08:48 (five years ago)

(don’t get me wrong, DJ Mdix is great: check “Ngiyazfunela” with Mpumi (2020) and Kaylow’s “Isgubhu” (2017) (both posted on this thread), or the brilliant “Umvulo” with Zanda Zakuza (2016))

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 13 October 2020 09:24 (five years ago)

Good sleuthing, thanks!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 15 October 2020 18:43 (five years ago)

“Never Never” is lovely, such a gorgeous slow build.

Tim F, Thursday, 15 October 2020 19:43 (five years ago)

well, here’s your Taking Sides for this Friday:

Sun-EL Musician ft. Nobuhle • Never Never

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rqdvi8AO-04
Simmy ft. Da Capo & Sun-El Musician • Emakhaya

(I’m going with Simmy here, for now)

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Friday, 16 October 2020 11:03 (five years ago)

<3 that simmy tune

nxd, Friday, 16 October 2020 11:58 (five years ago)

now listening to “Never Never” less cursorily, and yes, while not nearly as immediate as the Simmy track it’s gorgeous in its understatedness. the way everything swells up with the organ towards the 4-minute mark and then culminates in those horn blasts, wow!

(sure, take this out of context if you must)

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Friday, 16 October 2020 12:40 (five years ago)

both good but i especially like "emakhaya"

ufo, Friday, 16 October 2020 13:04 (five years ago)

Emakhaya is amazing

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 16 October 2020 19:58 (five years ago)

they’re both amazing, is where I’m at right now

Nobuhle live:

(the first song hasn't been released yet)

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Sunday, 18 October 2020 20:41 (five years ago)

i think i might prefer "never never" for now! but they're both essential and i can't wait for their albums

dyl, Sunday, 18 October 2020 21:46 (five years ago)

both gorgeous. this and the rolling afropop thread have opened me up to the best new stuff since I’ve been on ilx - thanks!

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 18 October 2020 22:21 (five years ago)

please don't yell at me for saying so, but the melody of some of the backing vocals in "emakhaya" reminds me of bob sinclar's "world, hold on"

dyl, Monday, 19 October 2020 00:03 (five years ago)

don't think even Simmy is going to yell at you, she retweeted several tweets like this:

Another one I posted on the Baby Are You Coming? thread, but I feel people here could do with some amapiano relaxation as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWo9vo9ZgvA
Kota Embassy ft. Cue • Sugar Mama

(this possibly outvibes even DJ Stokie’s “Senorita”)

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Monday, 19 October 2020 14:39 (five years ago)

oh thank goodness! xp

dyl, Monday, 19 October 2020 15:51 (five years ago)

lovely video for "Emakhaya":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kkdRc4FCs0

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Friday, 23 October 2020 20:33 (five years ago)

fun fact: Simmy calls herself (or at least her albums) “Tugela Fairy” because she’s from Tugela Ferry in KwaZulu Natal province, a town named after the ferry across the Tugela River that operated here and has since been replaced by the steel bridge you see in the video.

Welcome to Nonrock (breastcrawl), Friday, 23 October 2020 20:57 (five years ago)

Wow that's the heart of Zululand, it's not far off Isandlwana, and I checked, the area is King's land (Ingonyama). She's basically in the homelands stepping on the skulls of dead British soldiers :D

Nabozo, Saturday, 24 October 2020 16:26 (five years ago)

lol the Sun-el album is 159 mins long

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Saturday, 24 October 2020 17:27 (five years ago)
