rolling emo/pop-punk/permanent anxiety 2020

I was semi conflicted about this album at first cause some of it really does seem jam band adjacent, though rarely for that long

what are everyone's opinions of Spanish Love Songs 'round here?

i appreciate the power and the enthusiasm, and i'm not gonna lie, i will take a guy screaming "keep yr head up if you're not ok" at me right now, but

i also just can't shake the feeling that they're like a fuzzy Xerox of a Xerox of The Menzingers

should i let it go and just enjoy the tunes?

I know what you mean - they're a bit basic musically, but they write very impactful and catchy songs, and the lyrics are often great. You could reasonably say they took some shortcuts but I still like them a lot.

dude sings with an intensity you don't see too often. lyrics are great. very dark places occasionally, but relatable. I do think the new album is a step better than their earlier stuff

they're definitely a more advanced/effective upgrade on the recent Wonder Years / Menzingers template of socially anxious meat and potatoes emo

i don't really like any of the bands that fit this mold (forever disappointed that not all pop-punk records are awkward breeds by the sidekicks) so i haven't heard spanish love songs yet but i'm gonna give them a shot!

I think if they shook up their song structures and got the rhythm section to swing a bit they could really be something special

in general emo/pop-punk's shift to whining about social issues instead of whining about girls is A Good Thing even if I'm not always wild about the records

can't remember the last time i heard a record about girl problems, feel like it's been all mental illness since 2014

yeah, I guess that's down to some combo of 1) everyone getting sick of scene sex pests (not that they've been totally stomped out yet of course) 2) societal decline and 3) the influence of certain acts in the late aughts / early 10s

I'm assuming someone has already written about this somewhere though

ok so travis barker played drums on every track and co-wrote/produced the whole album now it all makes sense.

Saw an interview with Bartees Strange and he praised TV on the Radio, and that's who I hear on too many of his songs on Live Forever.

i don't know if it's "too" many but it's definitely prominent

i think he's vocally very influenced by tunde, but there's a lot more going on than just mimicry.

"panic" is fucking amazing

the singles have all been incredible

the second half is giving me massive priest = aura-era the church vibes

and the final track eventually works itself into a gish-era-sp-type jam

i had no idea it existed until tim f told me about it today but i'm really surprisingly about the springsteenian shift in their sound

warning for the general emo thread population, the acceptance record may exceed the limits of earnestness normally tolerated by the emo thread

i listened to the black foxxes record twice in a row today, it's the real deal

listened to that acceptance album yesterday, thx brad. i think its ok, about half good. i get a lot of killers sound from it.

about half good is where i landed as well, but that half is real good

dark age through wildfires is the highlight for me.

The Black Foxxes album isn't out yet, is it?
