also... saturday night wrist is their best album
― Spottie, Thursday, 20 August 2020 17:07 (five years ago)
I generally like them well enough but have trouble telling their records apart (even their songs tbh). Maybe a tad good monolithic and compressed for me.

oh whoops not premiering until midnight lol
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 21 August 2020 02:01 (five years ago)
xxp the “pink cellphone” outro is so damning to that album.
― Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 21 August 2020 05:33 (five years ago)
great song.also, 'koi no yokan' is their best album, imo
― Nourry, Friday, 21 August 2020 10:24 (five years ago)
I have no be honest, not a fan of the new album cover. reminds me of mudvayne
― unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 21 August 2020 11:20 (five years ago)
That is a Big-Ass Rock Song. Almost reminds me of Antenna-era Cave In.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 21 August 2020 12:17 (five years ago)
yeah I can hear that. the major keyness is unusual for them.
― unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 21 August 2020 12:28 (five years ago)
relistening to saturday night wrist the other day made me realize it's their first album that really reaches the level of space rock
could def hear an argument for it being their best; i thought it was their best when it came out, but then of course they released diamond eyes and koi no yokan both of which i like more
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 August 2020 13:40 (five years ago)
but like nothing on previous deftones records sounded like "beware" or "xerces"
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 August 2020 13:43 (five years ago)
they always sound like them but I do like ezrin's angle
― unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 August 2020 14:14 (five years ago)
it is sort of amazing how uniform deftones records are (10 to 12 songs, 46-52 minutes, many w the same producer) and yet no album is particularly similar to any specific other
― unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 August 2020 14:26 (five years ago)
always different and the same
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 August 2020 14:28 (five years ago)
the perfect band

the teaser promised at the very least a kind of dreamy intro to this
aaaah this record's gonna be so good
gonna hold out for the album, it's so close!
― Simon H., Friday, 18 September 2020 02:03 (five years ago)
song is fucking incredible especially once that bridge/outro section starts
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 18 September 2020 16:37 (five years ago)
Long Stereogum review of the new album by Luke O'Neil, whose Welcome To Hell World emails I skim until I can't stand it anymore (usually 3-5 paragraphs in). Looking forward to hearing the whole album.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 21 September 2020 14:13 (five years ago)
Stereogum is great for its headlines, but read any of their write-ups at your own risk; some of them are so unbelievably cringey they actually feature phrases like “this music RULES”
― beamish13, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:15 (five years ago)
Stereogum is great for its headlines
strongly disagree
― billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 18:44 (five years ago)
stereogum is good for the genuinely admirable breadth of what it covers, mostly not for the writing
anyway, I'm stoked for this. a "very good Deftones album" would be more than good enough.
― Simon H., Tuesday, 22 September 2020 01:44 (five years ago)
luke o neil is good at twitter but his writing is absolutely terrible
― global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 02:54 (five years ago)
chino mentioned in the vulture interview that clams casino is one of the black stallion remixers, pretty rad
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 22 September 2020 14:26 (five years ago)
yeah, fingers crossed that quality control is exerted and it ends up as one of the 5 good remix albums
― Simon H., Tuesday, 22 September 2020 14:33 (five years ago)
holy shit this album
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 19:09 (five years ago)
it's in my hot digital hands and I will be listening 3-5x while on this evening's delivery. extremely stoked

"error"... that's the hit
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 19:21 (five years ago)
so far (up to "Pompeij") this sounds like a less obviously hooky KNY. tons of weird chord progressions.
― get a mop and a bucket for this Well Argued Prose (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:15 (five years ago)
no idea how Chino can still shriek like that
― get a mop and a bucket for this Well Argued Prose (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:22 (five years ago)
yeah it’s sorta like kny cross-pollinated with the s/t. i am so about it
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:25 (five years ago)
I feel like there's more double/triple tracked Chino and I support that
― get a mop and a bucket for this Well Argued Prose (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:26 (five years ago)
the riff that opens “urantia” is so gnarly, and then the song immediately goes dreamy. really amazing twists in these songs
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:28 (five years ago)
it’s nigh-pumpkins-y????
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:29 (five years ago)
“error,” again, the best song ever made
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:32 (five years ago)
lol I wish I was still getting high
― get a mop and a bucket for this Well Argued Prose (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:35 (five years ago)
let me tell you: it’s great
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 21:38 (five years ago)
it's wild that this is this good but still might not even end up in my top 5 deftones albums
― get a mop and a bucket for this Well Argued Prose (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 September 2020 23:31 (five years ago)
i think it's shot up into my top three already but who can say
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 00:01 (five years ago)
it's certainly the best-sounding deftones record since the s/t
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 00:04 (five years ago)
Terry Date undefeated, for sure
― get a mop and a bucket for this Well Argued Prose (Simon H.), Friday, 25 September 2020 00:09 (five years ago)
Really loving this on first listen.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 25 September 2020 12:50 (five years ago)
I can't shake the feeling that someone lopped off the actual opening track, but otherwise the sequencing is great. "Ohms" is a splendid closer.
― get a mop and a bucket for this Well Argued Prose (Simon H.), Friday, 25 September 2020 13:57 (five years ago)
really enjoing it.'pompeji' is an immeditate highlight.and am I the only one who thinks of... no doubt while listening to 'headless'?
― Nourry, Friday, 25 September 2020 14:21 (five years ago)
occurred to me this is the most well-integrated the different sides of their sound have ever been. there's never a moment where the riffs clear out for something purely meditative and gorgeous like "sextape," "entombed" etc. it's just crushing and beautiful in countervailing waves, all the time. think they had a real breakthrough here
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 19:47 (five years ago)
"urantia" is the best
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 19:48 (five years ago)
i forget about the synth fantasia at the end of "pompeji" every time and it's always like i tripped into a black hole
