i'm not satisfied by the dialogue i've seen about dua lipa, maybe i just haven't found the good stuff. nothing is good at describing how successfully she occupies this space of having been around the block re: love and relationships but maintaining this clear line from what she knows is real love to how it may or may not play out for her. the register of her voice, the craft of the songs all highlight this appeal. when people accuse it of being generic i think they .. aren't available for this kind of direct, concise, surprisingly deep and worldly discourse on love from a contemporary pop star. she has been very good and successful and convincing at giving us variations on this not generic but general theme. i have a hard time thinking of pop stars who i can satisfactorily compare her to for this reason.

it occurred to me that she's like if Amy Winehouse wasn't reactionary, a la "oh contemporary pop music is so bad, I want to sound like when it was so pure" etc etc… it so happens that her voice is very similar to AW's, but it is used atop state of the art pop stylings…

dua lipa is fine. I'm a little suspicious of how pop stars are rewarded commercially and sometimes critically for having very manicured, "always on", don't-rock-the-boat personas (the recent twitter thing an amusing aberration) but she's got a bunch of jams it would be silly to deny

I'm confused by that tweet up there. I worked out belatedly that The Black Madonna has changed her name to The Blessed Madonna. Featuring actual pop star Madonna ( I misunderstood and thought she was being referred to as Blessed) also featuring Missy E but there other person in that pictorial collage is not Missy.

My elementary aged daughter loves a couple Dua Lipa songs, especially Break My Heart, and her crusty old dad loves Moodymann. I'm looking forward to this bizarrely.

My hot take here is that I would much rather hear peak Neneh Cherry or Missy or Stevie Nicks repurposed here than what they're doing now, especially in the hands of Larry Heard or Moodymann or even JLC (whose track will almost certainly be the laziest here).

personally i think it's really fun! i was very underwhelmed by the madonna & missy remix, but it sounds a little less drab in context and there are many other entertaining moments. "boys will be boys" finally making sense as a samba workout! jayda-g doing "cool"! mr fingers elevating "hallucinate"!

i haven't heard it yet but I was under the impression that BM was playing curator for these remixes by other people. def changes things if it's a mix.
