An 11-year-old student of mine will be thrilled I'm finally getting into Juice WRLD. That song is adorable, I love it.

I really like this song from little Trust Fund-esque twee indie band Finish Flag:

New Creeper song 'Poisoned Heart' sounding a lot like both 'Soak Up the Sun', and 'Perfect Day' from the Legally Blonde soundtrack. I feel more neutrally about it than the other advance singles which were sounding great, but needed to record those connections somewhere so it doesn't drive me crazy later.

god we've been anticipating that fuckin album for over six months now. unfair

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:18 (five years ago)

Arriving in September now, apparently. ;_;

tangenttangent, Sunday, 26 July 2020 18:25 (five years ago)

acc to their site it's still this coming Friday? another delay would be silly

aaaand the Creeper album, which kicked off the thread back in January, is FINALLY out today. stoked to dig into it (what's left of it that's new, that is)

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Friday, 31 July 2020 12:14 (five years ago)

this is pretty much all mid-tempo which is a bit of a bummer on contact, but I bet it will blossom nicely over the next while. "black moon" is a wonderful deep cut

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Friday, 31 July 2020 12:49 (five years ago)

hadn't realized there's also a new Fall of Troy on the way - the concept is a little strange, though

I had paid zero attention to Creeper until this new album, obviously need to go back to the last one too. But this is reeeeaaaaally scratching that MCR gothy glam-punk itch. So many hooks, and I love that it's a little cheeky but also totally unironic in all its doomy romanticism.

I think I prefer the sugar rush of the debut but I do like the new one a lot

same here - loving this record and will check out the earlier one too. it's less emo/pop punk and way more glam than I expected? singer sounds a bit like Patrick Wolf in his lower range, similar levels of goth theatricality too.

I missed that the 8.5-minute "Badlands" was released earlier and it's...a lot

uh so this Young Jesus album

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:08 (five years ago)

lost interest in the into it over it album after reading the press release

now that i'm back i would like to say the creeper album is perfect

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:11 (five years ago)

ah I see what you mean re: IIOI

I need to give Creeper more front to back listens but I love that they exist

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:21 (five years ago)

i really love the way it splices britpop and pop-punk, it's like gerard way's career in reverse

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:23 (five years ago)

much like others were with the Beths album I was initially a bit taken aback at the mellowness but I'm learning to embrace it in both cases

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:25 (five years ago)

but seriously, young jesus. there's even a Blue Nile ref on their bandcamp, what more could you want from yr saddle creek jazz-prog emo?

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 13:40 (five years ago)

i don't get mellowness at all from the creeper, it's maximal at every turn. it's less of a sugar rush than the last one tho

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 14:29 (five years ago)

"thorns of love" reminds me of the more ambitious hair metal adjacent stuff that maura plays me whenever we're drunk and hanging out

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 14:29 (five years ago)

Thanks for the heads up about Young Jesus. Loving this so far. "Lark" is amazing.

gman59, Tuesday, 18 August 2020 17:51 (five years ago)

it's really really good and one of the few times I've been legitimately compelled to evoke j*ff b*ckl*y when describing their sound

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 22:48 (five years ago)

hoo boy i gotta hear this record

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 00:07 (five years ago)

brad I am like 99% sure you will love this

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 00:16 (five years ago)

on third listen and hearing a fair bit of sea and cake (esp "Lark")

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 02:47 (five years ago)

was wavering between annoyance and enjoyment but track 3 is a clear step up, will continue for the whole thing

imago, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 07:10 (five years ago)

pretty good? let's rescreen. not sure i got a full handle on it

imago, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 07:47 (five years ago)

yeah Sea and Cake, Tortoise (at times) and The Antlers come to mind when listening to this. some of the guitars remind me of Kinsella-y midwest emo stuff and something like Real Estate

gman59, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 16:28 (five years ago)

listened again this morning sober on my commute, a totally distinct experience (lol) but still v cool. I'm fond of the slightly more aggressive previous album as well

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 16:31 (five years ago)

young jesus > regular jesus

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 14:23 (five years ago)

I've given myself a forced break from the young jesus album to make sure I don't wear it out, but I look forward to returning

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 14:31 (five years ago)

never knew i needed an emo-adjacent bark psychosis in my life, but what do you know

whiney on the moon (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 14:39 (five years ago)

ahaha if you listen enough some truly wild comparison points start to fly out of it

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 14:40 (five years ago)

"meditations" is a really unexpected continuation of the hoover/june of 44/abilene axis of emo

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 16:10 (five years ago)

*listens to "lark"* do you think these dudes dig phish

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 August 2020 17:50 (five years ago)

I was semi conflicted about this album at first cause some of it really does seem jam band adjacent, though rarely for that long

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 27 August 2020 04:01 (five years ago)

what are everyone's opinions of Spanish Love Songs 'round here?

i appreciate the power and the enthusiasm, and i'm not gonna lie, i will take a guy screaming "keep yr head up if you're not ok" at me right now, but

i also just can't shake the feeling that they're like a fuzzy Xerox of a Xerox of The Menzingers

should i let it go and just enjoy the tunes?

alpine static, Friday, 28 August 2020 00:28 (five years ago)

I know what you mean - they're a bit basic musically, but they write very impactful and catchy songs, and the lyrics are often great. You could reasonably say they took some shortcuts but I still like them a lot.

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 02:53 (five years ago)

dude sings with an intensity you don't see too often. lyrics are great. very dark places occasionally, but relatable. I do think the new album is a step better than their earlier stuff

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:45 (five years ago)

they're definitely a more advanced/effective upgrade on the recent Wonder Years / Menzingers template of socially anxious meat and potatoes emo

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:54 (five years ago)

lmao "socially anxious meat and potatoes emo"

perfect

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:55 (five years ago)

i don't really like any of the bands that fit this mold (forever disappointed that not all pop-punk records are awkward breeds by the sidekicks) so i haven't heard spanish love songs yet but i'm gonna give them a shot!

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 28 August 2020 14:58 (five years ago)

I think if they shook up their song structures and got the rhythm section to swing a bit they could really be something special

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:00 (five years ago)

in general emo/pop-punk's shift to whining about social issues instead of whining about girls is A Good Thing even if I'm not always wild about the records

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:03 (five years ago)

that's otm

can't remember the last time i heard a record about girl problems, feel like it's been all mental illness since 2014

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 28 August 2020 15:10 (five years ago)
