New Creeper song 'Poisoned Heart' sounding a lot like both 'Soak Up the Sun', and 'Perfect Day' from the Legally Blonde soundtrack. I feel more neutrally about it than the other advance singles which were sounding great, but needed to record those connections somewhere so it doesn't drive me crazy later.

aaaand the Creeper album, which kicked off the thread back in January, is FINALLY out today. stoked to dig into it (what's left of it that's new, that is)

this is pretty much all mid-tempo which is a bit of a bummer on contact, but I bet it will blossom nicely over the next while. "black moon" is a wonderful deep cut

hadn't realized there's also a new Fall of Troy on the way - the concept is a little strange, though

I had paid zero attention to Creeper until this new album, obviously need to go back to the last one too. But this is reeeeaaaaally scratching that MCR gothy glam-punk itch. So many hooks, and I love that it's a little cheeky but also totally unironic in all its doomy romanticism.

I think I prefer the sugar rush of the debut but I do like the new one a lot

same here - loving this record and will check out the earlier one too. it's less emo/pop punk and way more glam than I expected? singer sounds a bit like Patrick Wolf in his lower range, similar levels of goth theatricality too.

now that i'm back i would like to say the creeper album is perfect

I need to give Creeper more front to back listens but I love that they exist

i really love the way it splices britpop and pop-punk, it's like gerard way's career in reverse

much like others were with the Beths album I was initially a bit taken aback at the mellowness but I'm learning to embrace it in both cases

but seriously, young jesus. there's even a Blue Nile ref on their bandcamp, what more could you want from yr saddle creek jazz-prog emo?

i don't get mellowness at all from the creeper, it's maximal at every turn. it's less of a sugar rush than the last one tho

"thorns of love" reminds me of the more ambitious hair metal adjacent stuff that maura plays me whenever we're drunk and hanging out

on third listen and hearing a fair bit of sea and cake (esp "Lark")

was wavering between annoyance and enjoyment but track 3 is a clear step up, will continue for the whole thing

yeah Sea and Cake, Tortoise (at times) and The Antlers come to mind when listening to this. some of the guitars remind me of Kinsella-y midwest emo stuff and something like Real Estate

listened again this morning sober on my commute, a totally distinct experience (lol) but still v cool. I'm fond of the slightly more aggressive previous album as well

i appreciate the power and the enthusiasm, and i'm not gonna lie, i will take a guy screaming "keep yr head up if you're not ok" at me right now, but

should i let it go and just enjoy the tunes?

I know what you mean - they're a bit basic musically, but they write very impactful and catchy songs, and the lyrics are often great. You could reasonably say they took some shortcuts but I still like them a lot.

dude sings with an intensity you don't see too often. lyrics are great. very dark places occasionally, but relatable. I do think the new album is a step better than their earlier stuff

they're definitely a more advanced/effective upgrade on the recent Wonder Years / Menzingers template of socially anxious meat and potatoes emo

i don't really like any of the bands that fit this mold (forever disappointed that not all pop-punk records are awkward breeds by the sidekicks) so i haven't heard spanish love songs yet but i'm gonna give them a shot!

I think if they shook up their song structures and got the rhythm section to swing a bit they could really be something special

in general emo/pop-punk's shift to whining about social issues instead of whining about girls is A Good Thing even if I'm not always wild about the records
