would prefer if they did a pledge drive, but signed up anyway
― lukas, Thursday, 2 July 2020 20:54 (four years ago) link
i think a pledge drive is something most people in the UK / Europe are not very familiar with.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 2 July 2020 22:38 (four years ago) link
I just love the idea of NTS residents standing by to take my call, though
― lukas, Thursday, 2 July 2020 22:41 (four years ago) link
the funding of nts has always been a mystery to me! will be happy to sign up to this though - probably listen to about 60-70 hours of nts per month, so it's the least i could do
― Boris the Spreader (NickB), Thursday, 2 July 2020 22:45 (four years ago) link
(the joke being that public radio stations in the US do these annual pledge drives for donations where they spend what seems like half of air time asking you to call to donate, with coffee mugs and symphony tickets to entice you - it feels like you've wandered into a school selling baked goods for the girls volleyball team)
― lukas, Thursday, 2 July 2020 22:50 (four years ago) link
I am all for the pledge drive as i've always felt it is something i've missed out on.
haruomi hosono taking calls would be most excellent.

mainly happened through events & event sponsorships, which is now obviously not possible
― ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Sunday, 5 July 2020 06:32 (four years ago) link
my pledge drive thing wasn't totally a joke - they really should be much more intrusive asking for $/£/€/¥
― lukas, Sunday, 5 July 2020 23:26 (four years ago) link
(or rather, it was a joke, but I realized an opportunity to make myself seem more clever than I am)

Anyone else having problems with the app on android? Works fine listening live, but if I'm catching up on an old show, it keeps cutting out if I have the app running in the background. Am assuming it's because it's streaming from mixcloud and mixcloud seems to be generally quite shit. Or maybe it's my phone?
― kites aren't fun (NickB), Friday, 2 October 2020 16:54 (three years ago) link
Also hi to anyone who hangs out in the chat, I seem to spend more time talking gibberish on that these days than I do on ILX
― kites aren't fun (NickB), Friday, 2 October 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link
I only do that when I know the dj, but it's pretty fun when I can actually listen live (ie when the UK time zone lines up with when I'm working during the day).
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 2 October 2020 17:10 (three years ago) link
Is the chat generally very active? I think I've only checked it out on the very rare occasion I've been up in time to listen to Charlie Bones, and it has been quite active then.
― stirmonster, Friday, 2 October 2020 23:09 (three years ago) link
always busy in the mornings, but uk afternoons can be pretty hectic too for certain shows - goes mad during moxie but also for ruf dug, eclair fifi, shanti celeste, flo... it's a dead zone during the evening though i think

coolio!

loving Raga Vibrations but not providing a tracklist reeks of "hey listen to this exotic music from the mysterious Orient"
― lukas, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 22:27 (three years ago) link
that said this set has really made my day
― lukas, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 23:22 (three years ago) link
For some reason I have not been taking advantage of NTS much during this time, aside from a couple shows by friends that I always catch up on. Maybe because the endless abyss of music it represents is not psychologically helpful at present. But I'm enjoying the radio today.
Any other favorite shows recently?

Is it to possible to download NTS shows/mixes on whatever device you're using? Would like to put some on my old-ass ipod. I'm not the brightest when it comes to stuff like this! Thanks
― JackMyFruit, Monday, 8 February 2021 22:05 (three years ago) link
I think you'd have to find it on mixcloud and use a downloader?
― change display name (Jordan), Monday, 8 February 2021 22:09 (three years ago) link
in case NTS wasn't too much, this station out of Lyon/Paris/Brusells has a similar range and presentation of its archives that makes it easy to find great stuff:https://lyl.live/
found it via the Actual Grammar show, which is Joe Gilmore (Superpang) & Paul Emery

NTS tracks the history of UK Garage via six shows consisting of mixes and interviews with some pivotal figures, all UK Garage is excellent anyway but but these are particularly so.

I was listening to the DJ Narrows interview + mix the other day. Good guy, great DJ, powerful producer. The big trifecta

Got me through a lot of mornings when I was doing a dull desk job. He did ask me to be a guest on the show a few months back which was quite funny, but it never quite happened, more's the pity (if you ever listened to doyou jukebox, i'm faustapes). Anyhow some great shows in the archives - it's really had a big impact on my tastes, discovered a lot of amazing music along the way

Heartbreaking
I loved the music of course but the tone / affect of the show, the low stakes, unpressured feel of how it was run, was such a huge part of its appeal… so refreshing on today’s internet

Eclair Fifi had a bit of a mare today - she opened her show with a yasuaki shimizu track of his album IQ-179, and I think she just intended to play some interesting textural stuff to ease into the set with, but unfortunately she played the one with Hitler speeches and people sieg heiling all over the place and I'm not sure anyone was quite ready for that, I think she almost died of embarrasment. My heart went out to her but also it was quite funny. Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what shimizu's intentions were with that piece, but djs beware!
― o shit the sheriff (NickB), Thursday, 27 January 2022 19:06 (two years ago) link
Should say the rest of the show was excellent though as always, she's the best
― o shit the sheriff (NickB), Thursday, 27 January 2022 19:14 (two years ago) link
amazing.
have been enjoying the new morning lineup, flo and zakia are extremely good but john gomez, lupini and ruf dug have been killing it in the slot right after.
scratcha is unbearable though. boring selections, unending unfunny patter.
― adam, Thursday, 27 January 2022 20:08 (two years ago) link
That's too bad, I'm a fan of his music and twitter account.
(omg @ Hitler ambient)
