tracks 2 and 3 are the pinnacle (maybe 7 too) but yeah

imago, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 18:29 (five years ago)

"cloud city" -> "folding"... lysergic guitar bliss

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 18:34 (five years ago)

yeah that too i almost threw in cloud city

imago, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 18:34 (five years ago)

god though the end of 'in the den'

imago, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 18:38 (five years ago)

an ending so powerful they do it again on the next track and it's just as good

imago, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 18:45 (five years ago)

relistening to DiH in preparation and it's now obvious to me that Hum are the shane carruth of rock. no I will not be taking questions

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 19:02 (five years ago)

Well then, this is a bit oceanic, innit...

Maresn3st, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 20:05 (five years ago)

they get ross robinson in to produce this thing??

j., Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:09 (five years ago)

It's reminding me of that last Cave In record, that one that was mostly works-in-progress, but really good.

Maresn3st, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:12 (five years ago)

kind of too bad to lose brian st pere, his neil peart energy was a big part of this band's charm

j., Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:12 (five years ago)

i want the drums to be . . . bigger? i guess not everything can be big

mookieproof, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 23:11 (five years ago)

i really like "the summoning". most impressed by the last half really.

it's actually kind of mellow imo, a few tracks feel laggy tbh but overall it's a .. really cozy security blanket?

crystal-brained yogahead (map), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 23:31 (five years ago)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Goddamn I am so happy

I want to change my display name (dan m), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:09 (five years ago)

Step Into You and Cloud City seem like the most classicly Hum songs on this

He's listed on the Bandcamp fwiw

I want to change my display name (dan m), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:38 (five years ago)

saw a thing that said they replaced him

j., Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:43 (five years ago)

from what i can tell, jason gerken of shiner replaced st. pere for a brief period in 2015 but st. pere rejoined?

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:49 (five years ago)

not sure who's drumming on this record but more likely than not it's st. pere

feeling this. it's heavy but it doesn't really rock out much, which i think is fine? it's more just going for a vibe.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 00:50 (five years ago)

this Hum shit, it ain't for everybody man. it's a motherfucking vibe. it's for motherfuckers that's patient.

(about to play)

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 01:23 (five years ago)

is....is that a sax winding through this first song?!

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 01:35 (five years ago)

I can already tell this is gonna be a "front to back listens only" album

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 01:42 (five years ago)

so many bands have been striving for this and never getting there

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 01:53 (five years ago)

has this band gotten more psychedelic or am I just stoned: a memoir

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 02:09 (five years ago)

I get a real Slowdive vibe from the first track

I want to change my display name (dan m), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 02:22 (five years ago)

"Shapeshifter" is possibly their "Faded"/"Purple Rain"

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 02:23 (five years ago)

hold up now, it's been 12 hours

mookieproof, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:01 (five years ago)

I said possibly!!

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:03 (five years ago)

Extremely good album indeed.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:05 (five years ago)

am I mad or is there possibly Deftones cross-influence on this

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:07 (five years ago)

i hear it too

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:32 (five years ago)

been forever since i've listened to hum but this is sounding fantastic

ufo, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 03:40 (five years ago)

I think "The Summoning" is my fave so far. So heavy, and the fake-out ending is beyond dreamy

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 04:51 (five years ago)

I have been craving these tones... excellent news

brimstead, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 05:43 (five years ago)

cloud city >>>>>>

Spottie, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 05:58 (five years ago)

This is fucking fantastic. First song indeed heavy Slowdive/MBV vibes. The Summoning -> Cloud City -> Folding is just *all time*. What a comeback, man.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 08:46 (five years ago)

Genuinely never heard of these before. An Angelic Process reference? I'm in.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 09:20 (five years ago)

Devin Townsend too

imago, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 09:28 (five years ago)

How are the vocals on this? That's always kept Hum records at arms length for me, the guitars and landscapes always sounded great but the vocals were like bland cardboard and dragged everything down to earth. Corgan is a pretty divisive voice but you can't deny his vocals add character.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 10:35 (five years ago)

I'm listening now and oh good they've drowned him under enormous floods of guitars.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 10:57 (five years ago)

Sound reminds me of the first My Vitriol album as well, as another possible cross-influence

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 11:31 (five years ago)

The vocals are mostly super low-key, very 90s.

Maresn3st, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 12:23 (five years ago)

no one is listening to Hum for the vox but it is kind of remarkable his voice hasn't changed at all in 20+ years

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 12:25 (five years ago)

listening to Shiner's Schadenfreude, their first in 19 years, which is an impressive hiatus in itself! also 8 tracks with most of them on the longer side. kind of mining a similar vibe in spots. pretty good!

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:53 (five years ago)

I listen for the whole package. Matt Talbot's vox match the songwriting tone - appropriately understated.

Bryan St Pere is definitely playing on this. One reason why they took their time completing the record was due to working around everyone's schedule. I think they only toured in 2015 with the dude from Shiner.

The drumming in "Cloud City" rules pretty hard.

So far this is easily top 10 of the year for me

billstevejim, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:55 (five years ago)

This is pure comfort food.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:57 (five years ago)

The Summoning -> Cloud City -> Folding is just *all time*.

Nailed it

billstevejim, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:00 (five years ago)

It's kind of cool how you expect the closer to blossom out into oblivion but instead it recedes into something like a Perfect From Now On outtake.

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:01 (five years ago)

I would really love to call tracks 5-8 "a solid Side B" but I checked and of course this is one of those two-songs-per-side audiophile deals.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 17:03 (five years ago)

i love that they continue to put the running time on the album cover
