2276 points were received for ALL Born Slippy nominees combined: Born Slippy, .NUXX, Deep Pan, .TELEMATIC and Long Slow Slippy. Born Slippy Nuxx 2003 did not receive any votes.

4188 points were received for all ostensible Dark versions combined (excepting Spoon Deep, because c'mon) Dark & Long, Dark Train, Thing In A Book, Most 'Ospitable, 215 Miles, Dark Hard and Burts.

But on one of the two ways this poll was counted, our combined #1 is

No music collection is complete without "Rez".

Rez/Cowgirl KCRW session 2011 video

'Rez' was a rare example of a video making me dislike the track more (which i initially thought was ok, then liked a lot) as opposed to the other way round. still prefer 'Cowgirl' tho.

― blueski, Tuesday, June 29, 2004 11:28 AM

Sure I like their more mellow new tunes, but I still would absolutely kill to hear them do another total rockin' monster 12" banger like "Cowgirl" or "Cups" or "Spikee." Hell, NOBODY does totally rockin' monster 12" bangers anymore. Ah well.

Rez/Cowgirl 6 Music Festival 2016 video (link at 1:03:05)

I also went to one of the concerts (Broadcast on Radio 1!!!!!) at around the time of "Dubnobass...", (The same night as they found the body of Kurt Cobain!!!!) and it was grebt/GRATE/etc!!!!! Unlike the recent "live" album, it was one big long DJ mix style jam, mixing in various bits of their songs. The track on the live album which mixes "Cowgirl" and "Rez" is nearest equivalent- imagine a whole concert like that with most of the tracks from "Dubnobass..." and an early version "Born Slippy"!!!!

great poll, thank you sic

Dan S, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 03:20 (three years ago) link

where would "cowgirl" on its own placed? i definitely prefer it to the combined version and don't particularly care for "rez" on its own

ufo, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 03:21 (three years ago) link

all of their songs feel like a continuum linked to one another.

Rez/Cowgirl was a really inspired combination

Dan S, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 03:28 (three years ago) link

anyway, thanks for running this sic. loved all the alt versions and covers you've dug up for this immense rollout. they really have such an incredible discography

ufo, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 03:51 (three years ago) link

Thank you sic!!!!!!

Tim F, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 04:54 (three years ago) link

The combination of "rez" and "cowgirl" is so indelibly imprinted on my brain that anytime I listen to "rez" by itself and it ges to that milling synth section at the end which is like the floodwaters lapping around your knees after a tidal wave has ripped through town and then receded, and karl doesn't start chanting "everythingeverythingeverythingeverything" I always get a little shock.

Tim F, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 04:56 (three years ago) link

This was a perfect roll out. Thank you!

I am using your worlds, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 05:10 (three years ago) link

I like "Rez" standalone way more than "Cowgirl", but the moment Tim mentions on the combined version from Everything, Everything is such a joy. So good they named the album after it! Thanks for the amazing rollout sic

This was a fantastic poll and tons of fun. Well done, sic.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 07:45 (three years ago) link

Everyone is super-welcome, it’s been an exhausting pleasure. Massive thanks and praise to nashwan, who has been slaving furiously over a hot screen, behind the scenes, to stay barely ahead of the rollout. Bespoke images of any kind would have been enough to elevate my efforts, but this degree of gloss & style was beyond beyond. He was as keen as me to do a full 77, and then to blow it out to a hundred as well - and having such consistent, polished graphics anchoring each placement rly enabled/encouraged me to go to town with scrappy gatherings of supplemental material. (And then he also got carried away and whipped up another killer design & output for all the alt-universe placings too, AND pitched the Chonky Floof entry...)

Thanks and applause to everyone who voted and/or posted along the way in either thread, too. Lurkers can have a quiet nod of appreciation, if they’re near a mirror.

A single list, and other updates & ephemera, will follow tomorrow and later. Hopefully some part of the final day’s rollout took place in every regular reader’s awake time zone, and have fun catching up, anyone who’s reading this first.

thanks all, you completely renewed my interest in this amazing band. can't believe how much I discovered. still blown away by the existence of Dopropet and the original Always Loved a Film bassline and the Drift videos Underneath the Radar covers and the list goes on and on. great work, sic and nashwan!

Shenanigans. I had made my peace with "Juanita" coming in at #2, but #4 is some bullshit.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 15:04 (three years ago) link

oooooh i missed the whole end because i was running my trivia night thing! here are some really stupid notes i had written before

9. Whenever I think about A hundred days off i think "yeah i don't like that album as much" but then I hear TWO MONTHS OFF and I'm like "oh yeah that song is all time"
8. *well now that i know how high this song ranks i'm worried to post this one but) CUPS is a song I would've rated higher if the last two minutes were longer and the first nine minutes were shorter, but I still love it!
7. GOD TALKING
6. That skidding wheels bit though SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRI SKRIIIIIIIITCH THUNK i think about it a lot
5. Making a song this sweet and like... not cloying? is an incredible achievement (and uh no pun intended)
4. Not my personal fave, but probably the song I'd recommend to people who ask "what is Underworld?" The AUDACITY of making this track 1 lol
3. Tin There is actually perfect. Pearl's Girl too I guess but especially Tin There.
2. Dirty Epic was my (and apparently many others') My number one. It wasn't my introduction to Underworld, but the number of hours I spent listening to it on repeat at various points in my life cannot be understated. Such a sadness to it, really one of the most evocative Karl stories.
1. If you could wear out a DVD, I would've worn out the Rez/Cowgirl part of everything everything. Weird to hear them separate to this day. so you can imagine my delight to see them combined!

bonus story - we fostered two cats starting in february so they've been with us a few months and we "upgraded" that i guess to fully adopting them. they are sweet but they are still pretty feral so we can't touch them yet. we collectively refer to them as "the boys" and occasionally call them each just "boy". well i want them to get more comfortable with me so i talk to them a lot even though i can't pet them yet, and for the past week i've started doing this ting where i start singing NUXX to them but changing the lyrics to be about what they're doing? "cat boy small boy chewing on cardboard boy in the kitchen boy he is a fuzzy boy" shit like that. they don't seem amused but i like it and it is actually making me like that song more again OK THE END

I disagree with the ordering of the top 20 but that's true of all these artist polls I never vote in

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 19:40 (three years ago) link

hard to argue with the #1. I don't think anything will ever match the high I got from hearing "Rez/Cowgirl" live on Everything Everything for the first time. I was 16, I think. Still, I thought "Juanita" would take it. was cool to see some newer stuff in the Top 20. Three of my top 5 were from the last 5 years.

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 19:47 (three years ago) link

Shenanigans. I had made my peace with "Juanita" coming in at #2, but #4 is some bullshit.

you only have yourself to blame tbh

Juanita partistans are very much encouraged to think of it as the alternative #1 - I was actually planning to formally count down 6, 5, and 4 as the "real" top three, until literally yesterday I realised that with four different versions of Snake voted for, that didn't really work.

(J : K : TDOL still would have beaten Jumbo without votes for Juanita.)

Have there been any other polls where the #1 got no #1 votes?!

Not really fair to compare :)

okay here we go with PLAYLISTS for relistening:

the MAIN COUNTDOWN playlist is designed just for listening: if there's a remastered version of a single, or a Drift piece that got reworked after the video, then the audio-only version will generally be in here. Most of the sibling tracks also appear in more than one form.

the VISUAL PLAYLIST is designed for either watching, or putting on the TV for your going-about-your-day listening. Everything that has a video of some kind has one of those videos appear, anything else which I could find a standalone pro-shot live video for shows up with one of those, and there are some audience-shot live videos of varying quality for a few others.

the ALTERNATE VERSIONS playlist has a different take, or a live reworking, of most of the countdown (The 15-minute Peach Tree and 20-minute Ancient Phat Farm Coat are both only here, as the Riverruns are on the countdown, and Spoon Deep is also here instead of the main countdown).

also, wow. i was gonna joke about how long this rollout took but you really put together everything, everything

mookieproof, Tuesday, 23 June 2020 22:56 (three years ago) link

At the risk of making Brad sadder, I feel compelled to note that while I like "8 Ball" a lot I don't really think of it as a peak UW tune - it kinda sounds like the band was asked to write a soothing instrumental dub of "Pure Shores".

Doubtless everyone will tell me "yes, that is why it is great" - and I agree it's nice! - but not so exciting that I would put it above anything else in the top 50 or so.

(although with such depth of quality in tunes that's not at all the put-down it looks like)

Tim F, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 04:40 (three years ago) link

compelled to note "+1" on this, lest Tim feel alone with his take.

could swear there was a top 100 in text posted here, did I dream it or is it in another thread?
