he's right that being in a union won't save your job -- journalists aren't cops. but it's also one of the best pitches for creating a union. get money now by extracting structural raises and get money later by bargaining and ratifying severance for when you get thrown out on the street, bcuz they will throw you out on the street

never mind the business, how does one grow the hops that make the perfect session ipa

Best New Reissue today for an album titled Get in Union.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 19 June 2020 11:37 (five years ago)

The new Neil Young album was awarded "Best New Reissue," but I don't think it's a reissue (the material is old, but it's a new album)?

OG Honeymoon Ave (morrisp), Thursday, 25 June 2020 14:50 (five years ago)

it's not a reissue but it's hard to fit what it is into stamp form. "best new formerly lost music"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 25 June 2020 14:51 (five years ago)

anyway even though it's not accurate i think it fits that tag better than bnm

October is the most embarrassing shit

https://oct.co/essays/sylvan-esso-interview?utm_source=p4k

In particular, what type of wine do you guys like to drink?
Nick: Well, it's hot out, so there's been a lot of Italian whites.

Amelia: Yeah. A lot of Italian whites.

Nick: There's no way to talk about what wine you're drinking without sounding like a turd.

Amelia: It's a beer publication. You can say whatever you want.

Nick: I guess that's true.

Amelia: Yeah. Into Italian whites right now. I like anything from the Loire Valley. Mostly white, unless we're having food, or steak. And then we'll go for really solid Nebbiolo.

Is this different from when you're out on the road? What's the tour drink of choice?
Nick: Gin.

Amelia: Yeah, yeah. I have gin and then we put grapefruits on the rider, so that I can make like a gin, La Croix, fresh squeezed grapefruit drink every night.

Nick: That's kind of like the tour drink. That and, like, Peroni.

i don't like Sylvan Esso's music but i don't understand the issue here. it's not like they're bragging about popping magnums of Dom Perignon or whatever.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Friday, 26 June 2020 17:49 (five years ago)

real indie heads only drink rubbing alcohol

rob, Friday, 26 June 2020 18:15 (five years ago)

I remember when October was a real beer site. Now there's all this "woke" wine talk there.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 26 June 2020 18:49 (five years ago)

I'm not going to spew any elitist bullshit, but white wine? Oh my fucking God. I'll stay for a little while to see if October still serves my needs, but with today's interview, I'm not counting on it. I understand the career move, but I just don't think it's going to serve me any more.

OG Honeymoon Ave (morrisp), Friday, 26 June 2020 19:00 (five years ago)

I wonder if it's going to serve anyone's needs. I don't think a web- only publication can attract readers interest in Barefoot and Ecco. To my knowledge, no one actually hunts down information about such wines. People just see it on the shelves and that's it. Let's give October a few months, until the corporate contributors pull the plug.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 26 June 2020 19:02 (five years ago)

let's not and say we did.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Friday, 26 June 2020 22:06 (five years ago)

I've started to hear good things about October, seems like it's breaking down barriers between genres by allowing token appreciation of drinks that beer kids usually look down on.

coptic feels (seandalai), Friday, 26 June 2020 23:47 (five years ago)

maybe it's time beer kids got looked down on, not pandered to.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Saturday, 27 June 2020 00:40 (five years ago)

I don’t know. Before October came around you had to actually go to a show to find out that your favorite band were a bunch of farty drunks

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Saturday, 27 June 2020 00:54 (five years ago)

Enjoyed this review today, although most of the music on that compilation is the sonic equivalent of lentil soup.

Remember seeing ads for Pure Moods a lot on TV (didn't we poll it?). I had never heard "Return to Innocence" before and the 10-second snippet they played really made me want to hear the whole song

Vinnie, Monday, 29 June 2020 04:23 (five years ago)

I really liked this review, because even though I own and adore that compilation, the writing put a new perspective on it, the piece is a really good justification for why it's worth them doing these Sunday revisits

boxedjoy, Monday, 29 June 2020 07:04 (five years ago)

Some good lines in that review, for sure. (Quoting Sontag on camp is a bit of a “Webster’s Dictionary defines ________ as...” move, but the citation feels earned in the 2nd reference.)

Pat McGroin (morrisp), Monday, 29 June 2020 07:53 (five years ago)

this is one of my favorite pieces of writing of the year (I've wanted to pitch an enigma sunday review for a while but have never quite gotten the courage)

a little confused on this, I think they are reviewing a 97 edition with a different tracklist than the one President Keyes posted?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 June 2020 15:20 (five years ago)

The review itself mentions that there was an original UK version, which was tweaked for the later US release. Not clear on what the changes were tbh.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 29 June 2020 15:36 (five years ago)

yeah, great review!

as for track lists, yes, they changed pretty significantly

geoffreyess, Monday, 29 June 2020 20:04 (five years ago)

is this the first time they've slotted a track review in to whats the album reviews area? (for posterity the new kanye song)

devvvine, Tuesday, 30 June 2020 23:45 (five years ago)

I think so, yes! I'm not mad about it.

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 30 June 2020 23:57 (five years ago)

probably.

also, kanye should have stayed quiet. last thing anyone needs right now is his narcissism.

"IF YOU LISTEN TO KANYE, YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM"

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 30 June 2020 23:59 (five years ago)

Weird review. Why did they bother?

Pat McGroin (morrisp), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 00:57 (five years ago)

because kanye is one of their top-five defining artists since the conde nast takeover became complete?

j., Wednesday, 1 July 2020 01:03 (five years ago)

So review it like any other Kanye track? Why break precedent for this one, just to be... “Ehh, this sucks”

Pat McGroin (morrisp), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 01:14 (five years ago)

(Or does today just happen to be the beginning of a new era, in which track reviews are mixed in with album reviews, and it just as easily could have been Gum Country or whatever?)

Pat McGroin (morrisp), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 01:16 (five years ago)

it would make more sense if from now on they're putting track reviews in with album reviews instead of in with news

ufo, Wednesday, 1 July 2020 01:29 (five years ago)

I wonder why they didn’t review that Beyoncé track; seems like it would have been a natural choice.

Pat McGroin (morrisp), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 01:57 (five years ago)

A Sufjan single is now the lead review and labeled BNM. So I guess this is a thing now.
