i was a little bummed by the new Modern Nature release, but their album from last year (I think) was awesome.

bonus if you like both, ums

both of those Ultimate Painting guys seem to be pretty much worth following no matter what they do.

so their female Indian EIC is targeting POC for layoffs, or was that decision made above her head?

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:27 (three years ago) link

they just laid off their white male EIC so that characterization doesn't seem fair to me

a problem w/ media unions is that they're very good at addressing things like money but very bad (or at least inefficient) in addressing diversity issues (separate from pay), and the problem only gets more intractable in a climate such as this where every site is making cuts and nobody is hiring

EXCLUSIVE: Employees at the music and culture site Pitchfork are staging a work stoppage in protest of what they say are anti-union initiatives taken by the publication and its parent company, magazine publisher Condé Nasthttps://t.co/tGpCEeNZWX

Earlier this month, CEO Lynch dismissed the usefulness of unionization, saying in an all-staff email that while “some may believe that joining a union will protect their job, unfortunately, it’s just not the case. We all have seen the thousands of journalists who have lost their jobs over the last many months. The headwinds that the media industry is experiencing right now, combined with COVID-19, are just too strong for any union.”

“What will save jobs is an entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to be innovative when it comes to the ways we evolve and grow our business together,” he said.

the ways we evolve and grow our business together

holy shit, a shiver of disgust just went down my spine. the crappy place i work at has an "evolve" initiative that has never been explained and has no point, but usually involves some guy i don't know telling us about how we need to "grow our business together"

Karl Malone, Thursday, 18 June 2020 17:58 (three years ago) link

he's right that being in a union won't save your job -- journalists aren't cops. but it's also one of the best pitches for creating a union. get money now by extracting structural raises and get money later by bargaining and ratifying severance for when you get thrown out on the street, bcuz they will throw you out on the street

The new Neil Young album was awarded "Best New Reissue," but I don't think it's a reissue (the material is old, but it's a new album)?

October is the most embarrassing shit

https://oct.co/essays/sylvan-esso-interview?utm_source=p4k

In particular, what type of wine do you guys like to drink?
Nick: Well, it's hot out, so there's been a lot of Italian whites.

Amelia: Yeah. A lot of Italian whites.

Nick: There's no way to talk about what wine you're drinking without sounding like a turd.

Amelia: It's a beer publication. You can say whatever you want.

Nick: I guess that's true.

Amelia: Yeah. Into Italian whites right now. I like anything from the Loire Valley. Mostly white, unless we're having food, or steak. And then we'll go for really solid Nebbiolo.

Is this different from when you're out on the road? What's the tour drink of choice?
Nick: Gin.

Amelia: Yeah, yeah. I have gin and then we put grapefruits on the rider, so that I can make like a gin, La Croix, fresh squeezed grapefruit drink every night.

Nick: That's kind of like the tour drink. That and, like, Peroni.

I remember when October was a real beer site. Now there's all this "woke" wine talk there.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 26 June 2020 18:49 (three years ago) link

I'm not going to spew any elitist bullshit, but white wine? Oh my fucking God. I'll stay for a little while to see if October still serves my needs, but with today's interview, I'm not counting on it. I understand the career move, but I just don't think it's going to serve me any more.

OG Honeymoon Ave (morrisp), Friday, 26 June 2020 19:00 (three years ago) link

I wonder if it's going to serve anyone's needs. I don't think a web- only publication can attract readers interest in Barefoot and Ecco. To my knowledge, no one actually hunts down information about such wines. People just see it on the shelves and that's it. Let's give October a few months, until the corporate contributors pull the plug.

I've started to hear good things about October, seems like it's breaking down barriers between genres by allowing token appreciation of drinks that beer kids usually look down on.

I really liked this review, because even though I own and adore that compilation, the writing put a new perspective on it, the piece is a really good justification for why it's worth them doing these Sunday revisits

Some good lines in that review, for sure. (Quoting Sontag on camp is a bit of a “Webster’s Dictionary defines ________ as...” move, but the citation feels earned in the 2nd reference.)
