mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 13:55 (five years ago)

kyoto is almost as good as motion sickness. i'll bet this one is great after a few listens, even if it doesn't make a perfect first impression.

treeship., Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:01 (five years ago)

on first listen it's pretty immediately better than stranger imo

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:02 (five years ago)

she's a fucking great lyricist

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:02 (five years ago)

i love "halloween" but i hate conor and wish he'd go away

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:06 (five years ago)

"chinese satellite" has absolutely ruined my life, i'd say she outdid "motion sickness" there

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:13 (five years ago)

was listening without paying much attention to the lyrics, and it’s washing over me. im clearly doing it wrong and will save it for a time i can pay better attention.

kyoto is still a kick in the ass tho, what an excellent song.

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:18 (five years ago)

if you're a work of art
i'm standing too close
i can see the brush strokes

i hate your mom
i hate it when she opens her mouth
it's amazing to me how much you can say when you don't know what you're talking about

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:21 (five years ago)

"i see you" is.... the best song

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:21 (five years ago)

just got to chinese satellite, another great one. major echoes of the last couple albums by the national, especially in the way the drums and the strings interact. the chorus melody is super strong, feels like it could fit easily into a heroine's torch song in a disney movie.

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:31 (five years ago)

i find it hard to get to the end of the record because i have to listen to "i see you" at least three times in a row before progressing

arrangement reminds me of neon bible (underrated)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:32 (five years ago)

That chord change 30 seconds or so before the end of Savior Complex!

Matt DC, Thursday, 18 June 2020 14:47 (five years ago)

that part where it briefly turns into 'what a wonderful world'?

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:01 (five years ago)

Brad you should go back to stranger too

But yeah a few days on this album and even some of the less conspicuous tracks like Moon Song are revealing their richness. Helps to hear it in good sound quality.

abcfsk, Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:27 (five years ago)

i have gone back to stranger! it's a good record. this one's great

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:30 (five years ago)

Good interview here

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:46 (five years ago)

Ah, twas mentioned earlier I see. Looking forward to playing this!

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 18 June 2020 15:48 (five years ago)

if you never get to the end of the record than you never get to the middle section of "I Know The End"

don't let that happen to you

alpine static, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:17 (five years ago)

horns on this remind me of Beulah at times.

akm, Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:36 (five years ago)

agreed, that was my first reaction when i heard kyoto

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Thursday, 18 June 2020 16:41 (five years ago)

"chinese satellite"! "i know the end"! idk if this is better than her debut but probably its equal

ufo, Friday, 19 June 2020 01:09 (five years ago)

This seems better than her debut on first listen - I couldn't really get into Stranger aside from "Smoke Signals", "Motion Sickness" and "Scott Street".

Already love "I See You" and "Kyoto". "Chinese Satellite" is incredible, the careful plucking on "Halloween" is gorgeous imo and Oberst isn't on it long enough to be distracting, and I'm a sucker for pretty strings so "Savior Complex" is right up my street.

Still kinda meh about: "DVD Menu", "Garden Song"

Roz, Friday, 19 June 2020 02:47 (five years ago)

update: the title track is perfect

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:27 (five years ago)

The last two songs too.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:33 (five years ago)

"chinese satellite" is like a kathleen edwards-quality song

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:34 (five years ago)

and "moon song" is 100 percent taylor swift

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:39 (five years ago)

fucking incredible record jesus

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:41 (five years ago)

if we were to pin boygenius songs to individual songwriters my favorite phoebe bridgers song would be "me & my dog" and she wrote an album full of songs as good or better than that one

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 18:49 (five years ago)

this list gets the top 3 right:

you called me on a payphone
they still got payphones
it costs a dollar a minute

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 19 June 2020 20:02 (five years ago)

That's about her dad, right?

Colonel Radle (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 June 2020 00:08 (five years ago)

I’m on my first listen but so far making me feel like the early 00s is starting to come back into vogue? Reminding me of songwritery albums from that era.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 20 June 2020 00:35 (five years ago)

xpost yes, she confirmed in something i read

alpine static, Saturday, 20 June 2020 01:01 (five years ago)

I hear that early 2000s thing too. Big Sufjan/Polyphonic Spree vibes from 'I Know The End'.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Saturday, 20 June 2020 09:52 (five years ago)

"I Know The End" sounds most like Bright Eyes tbh, just with a much better singer lol. Amazing song though, that closing verse is incredible.

Roz, Saturday, 20 June 2020 10:17 (five years ago)

i don't really like the horns on this album that much because they reminds me of bombastic 00s indie folk in a way that conflicts with the things i like about this album

ufo, Saturday, 20 June 2020 10:24 (five years ago)

even on kyoto?

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Saturday, 20 June 2020 12:29 (five years ago)

especially on kyoto

ufo, Saturday, 20 June 2020 13:01 (five years ago)

gasp!

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Saturday, 20 June 2020 13:07 (five years ago)

😱

Colonel Radle (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 20 June 2020 13:15 (five years ago)

i love the horns. i love the ending of i know the end too.

treeship., Saturday, 20 June 2020 13:30 (five years ago)

i listened to this while jogging today and yesterday. i think it's a masterpiece and an album i'll be listening to 20 years from now.

treeship., Saturday, 20 June 2020 13:31 (five years ago)

one of the reviews i saw compared "I Know the End" to the last track on Lifted

xxxxpost to Roz

alpine static, Saturday, 20 June 2020 19:07 (five years ago)

Early favorites: "Garden Song," "Moon Song," and "Punisher."

Indexed, Saturday, 20 June 2020 20:53 (five years ago)

Fantastic stuff. Huge step up from the first album imo, in terms of - well, in terms of nearly everything. Lyrics, consistency of sound not for the sake of it, not monotonous but because it builds towards something, creates a whole of an arc, and a hugely impressive one. 'I Know the End' is killer, and such a release!

Only quip is that the sonics of 'Garden Song' don't sit well with me at all! Listening through headphones, the warbly sound makes me feel seasick lol.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 20 June 2020 23:06 (five years ago)

@LBI, was just thinking how much I love 'Garden Song' but that the soft but persistent pulse underlying everything makes me a bit anxious.

unashamed and trash (Unctious), Monday, 22 June 2020 13:10 (five years ago)

The sound on this is really weird in general, like everything is slushed together in the mix and backgrounded and then her voice is absolutely front-and-centre and crystal clear over it all.

Matt DC, Monday, 22 June 2020 13:29 (five years ago)

otm
