So I'm probably the last person to learn this, but apparently she's not singing "shocked" here at 1'12, 2'00 and 2'46:

Nice list Alfred. Nice to see you mention the quality of some of her albums. Body Language, X and Aphrodite are all pretty underrated.

Would be great to see a Kylie poll on here one day.

i've been wanting to run one for ages

maybe in a few months

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 21:12 (four years ago) link

That would be awesome!

kitchen person, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 21:29 (four years ago) link

three months pass...

The new song "Magic" reminded me of another recent song I couldn't put my finger on until I read the YouTube comments and realized it was Katy Perry's "Chained to the Rhythm"

anyway it's not bad or anything but the similarity is a bit too much for me tbh

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 24 September 2020 11:34 (three years ago) link

guess it's for the best that i struggle to remember what "chained to the rhythm" was like

think this is another great one

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 15:48 (three years ago) link

definitely not too similar to 'chained to the rhythm' for me. one thing about that song is that the lyrics sucked while these lyrics are great. i love everything about the new song. i loved 'say something' too. lol i didn't expect to like new kylie especially this year but like she is so so good at the highest form of generic disco pop it makes me want to cry.

Give me a Chad Smith-type feel (map), Friday, 25 September 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

wrt the katie perry song it represents a type of major-hit pop song that wants to look like it 'has something to say' but really just makes a virtue out of submission to the powers that be - i gag at that sort of thing. with these new kylie songs she just sounds so refreshed and focused on this goal of achieving pure dance pop transcendence it bowls me over completely. i'm buying it all lol. i didn't like 'golden' much.

she looks SO GOOD in that blue dress

another good one!

ufo, Friday, 25 September 2020 23:17 (three years ago) link

one month passes...

Great album but I dunno if it's everything going on or what but it's going in one ear and out the other

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Friday, 6 November 2020 05:00 (three years ago) link

on first listen it's all just fine. no real duds but there's nothing really to elevate it and make me want to come back to it either

ufo, Friday, 6 November 2020 12:23 (three years ago) link

the speed-up & solo in "dance floor darling" is quite cool though

ufo, Friday, 6 November 2020 12:27 (three years ago) link

This set of tracks seems super generic but I'll give them a few tries. Maybe a few of them will start to pop.

skip, Friday, 6 November 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link

... whoa @ "real groove"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 6 November 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

^^ yes.

Between this album, Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, and Kylie Minogue's, it's been a banner year for post-disco awesomeness.

monday tuesday wednesday thursday friday it's the weekend

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 6 November 2020 18:30 (three years ago) link

This is a really likeable album. I don't see it sticking and some of the production is a bit Hype Machine Remixes 2008, but she's so endearing and charismatic even when it feels a little bland.

gonna assume you intended to write Roísín Murphy there. would make for a nice poll.

I did, thanks.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 7 November 2020 11:15 (three years ago) link

Feel like Sophie Ellis-Bextor could get those Instagram living room disco covers into an album we would be living through a total renaissance

boxedjoy, Saturday, 7 November 2020 11:18 (three years ago) link

That unexpected tempo change on Dancefloor Darling is one of my favourite musical moments of the year.

Great album.

kitchen person, Saturday, 7 November 2020 18:33 (three years ago) link

This album is nonstop. Such a fantastic return to form.

KevRus, Tuesday, 10 November 2020 18:19 (three years ago) link

Love “Magic”, and the Infinite Disco version of “Say something” with the added choir is A+

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 14 November 2020 00:28 (three years ago) link

i think this is probably better than future nostalgia as far as post-disco pop this year

definitely the best kylie album in a decade

ufo, Saturday, 14 November 2020 00:33 (three years ago) link

I don't think it's a great album, certainly not as imaginatively produced as Roisin Murphy, Jessie Ware, and Dua Lipa's, say -- what a year! But I like half of it.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 14 November 2020 00:33 (three years ago) link

it's good-not-great but still incredibly solid. a lot of little great moments like the "get me to the weekend!" mini bass solo on "monday blues"

ufo, Saturday, 14 November 2020 00:47 (three years ago) link

Between this album, Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, and (Roisin)'s, it's been a banner year for post-disco awesomeness.

Also for consideration on the pile, Horse Meat Disco's debut album, including four Amy Douglas lead vocals, two Kathy Sledge leads, and one N'Dea Davenport.

after a few listens, i'm not hearing anything exciting here and it's bumming me out

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:13 (three years ago) link

how is "dancefloor darling" at least not exciting

ufo, Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:28 (three years ago) link

tbh i have just replayed the first six tracks a number of times so i don't think i've gotten there yet. i will try DFD and check back.

I get grouping these four albums together as some mini-zeitgeist, but Kylie's is bringing up the rear by a considerable distance.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:54 (three years ago) link

*at a considerable distance makes more sense. It's late.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:56 (three years ago) link

Have been caning the HMD album the last two weeks - so good! xps

groovypanda, Saturday, 14 November 2020 16:49 (three years ago) link

Playing all four records (plus Annie's) back-to-back this weekend and having the best time. xpost

Disagree that Kylie's is the worst - it's about on par with Future Nostalgia for me.

Roz, Sunday, 15 November 2020 04:05 (three years ago) link

Ware > Murphy >>>> Dua Lipa >>>>>>>>>>>>> Kylie

The Annie is a different thing imo, and I would've loved it in 2014 more than I do now.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 November 2020 04:48 (three years ago) link

Disco LP debuted at #1 in the UK: she has now had #1 albums there in five calendar decades.

(she didn't get a #1 in Australia until the 2000s.)

Ware > Dua > Roisin > Kylie for me

Trust me, I’m more disappointed in myself for the order of the middle two than anyone in here could be

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Sunday, 15 November 2020 14:35 (three years ago) link

I hadn't noticed this was happening - a 24 hour Kylie channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t982j1D5V_o

currently playing one of my fave videos: "Did It Again" <3 <3

Roz, Sunday, 15 November 2020 16:15 (three years ago) link

Dua’s is best, to me

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Monday, 16 November 2020 03:22 (three years ago) link

alright, i tried dancefloor and it feels like it's trying way too hard for me.
i don't think i fuck with this at all.

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 November 2020 05:49 (three years ago) link

idk if it's weird to talk about the songwriting on a dance-pop record but the real strength on this record for me is the way the melodies move. i get ppl's issues with the production, it's certainly broad, but i think the songs have really interesting and catchy interlocking parts

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 16 November 2020 22:28 (three years ago) link

reviewing this has certainly renewed my faith in people being awful
