so i put four michael jackson records up on ebay and made 75 bucks. i had them priced at five bucks apiece in the store. i would have sold six records and made even more but a friend of a friend called me up at the last minute and begged me for a copy of thriller and off the wall so i sold them to her for ten bucks total. cuz i'm nice like that.

AIGHT, won an auction for Two Sides - I ended up catching feelings and overspending a little bit in the name of GRAAAAH MY RECORD MYYYYYNE, but I'm rationalizing buyer's remorse away since (a) the price I ended up paying was more or less market value so it's not like I was getting ripped off or anything and (b) I figured I had a little extra spending capital since I absolutely robbed someone over that Left Banke LP.
other weekend purchases: Grace Jones, "Nightclubbing"; Willie Nelson, "Phases & Stages"; Marshall Crenshaw's first LP

can't say i'm a fan, but only cuz i've never heard him that much. looked kinda neat. u.s. ampex pressing.
― scott seward, Monday, 29 June 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)
i am something of an ampex completist as well.
― scott seward, Monday, 29 June 2009 17:51 (sixteen years ago)
i browsed in three different places that had records yesterday and i couldn't find ANYTHING that i wanted. granted, one was a huge comix/anime/game store with a big used vinyl section and one was a depressing cd store with a fairly large used vinyl section. but one was an honest to gosh record store. i'm not THAT hard to please. so sad.
― scott seward, Monday, 29 June 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)
I went to a record store Saturday and was annoyed with the prices. The two stores I've been to here in Orlando (Park Ave and Rock n Roll Heaven) are too expensive. Everything was $10 this, $15 that, $20 this, $30 that. I saw a record I gave away - for good reason - selling for $20.
Eventually I settled on an Elliott Carter Nonesuch thing for $3 and Ricky Nelson's self-titled for $4 (or prices vice versa).
― bamcquern, Monday, 29 June 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)
yeah mayyors 12" listening now so pwrfl
― 69, Monday, 29 June 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
also love that lol coxhill cover
the cd store i wwas in was such a desolate pit. they actually had chain link fence inside the store and i definitely felt trapped. just a huge airless room devoid of any human touch. they might as well have been selling dollar socks and canadian pasta sauce. so sad. 95% of their vinyl should have been a dollar. trashed stevie wonder dollar records priced at $9.95. blahhhhhhh.....
― scott seward, Monday, 29 June 2009 18:06 (sixteen years ago)
i mean, i'm happy to just find ONE decent record. just one. i'll even overpay for it if it's something i actually want.
― scott seward, Monday, 29 June 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)
shut-outs are the worst.
anni3 and i are going to LA this weekend, and might have some time to bop to some rekkstores. besides fishin for bargains at amoeba, where should we go? we'll wanna hit ooga booga in chinatown, but thats a little too boutiquey to satisfy all my dollar-bin fantasies
― 69, Monday, 29 June 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)
we'll be basically between hollywood and south pasadena
went to a big flea market on sunday and that was kinda fun. not a ton of records, but i got a couple of things for the store. nice copy of birds of a feather by jack blanchard & misty morgan. some other stuff.
― scott seward, Monday, 29 June 2009 18:12 (sixteen years ago)

i had no idea i would be selling so many tapes. i mean, not, like, crazy amounts, but i sell about 20 a week. which is around 19 more than i thought i'd be selling every week. then again, i'm probably the only record store in the county that sells them. and it's hard to find cool tapes at thrift stores.

will sonny sharrock's ASK THE AGES ever come out on LP? it is a little dumb for me to want that, since it was probably never even mastered for vinyl?
― 69, Thursday, 2 July 2009 18:03 (sixteen years ago)
today: cecil barfield LP on Mississippi, Mayyors 12", and also enjoying a listen to the new Magik Markers LP.
― ian, Thursday, 2 July 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

― dmr, Thursday, 2 July 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
BOSS is so good!
― 69, Thursday, 2 July 2009 20:08 (sixteen years ago)

more like boss, a few tender piano moments. xp
and i love that record, scott! especially the first track. so pretty.
― ian, Thursday, 2 July 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)
aaron moore is also in amolvacy, who released one of the best records in recent memory--HoHoKus.
too bad the new starving weirdos album isn't on vinyl. cuz bo'weavil makes such nice vinyl packages. that might be my fave album of the year. i did get a really cool starving weirdos 7 inch from abandon ship records.
abandon ship sent me another really good two-dudes-sitting-around-collaborating-on-a-split-lp album by steve gunn and shawn david mcmillan. you guys probably know who they are. the steve gunn side is really pretty guitar stuff.
― scott seward, Thursday, 2 July 2009 21:02 (sixteen years ago)
otm "more like BOSS" is what I was hoping ian would say
― dmr, Thursday, 2 July 2009 21:42 (sixteen years ago)
just wanna put in a good word for Volcano The Bear here!
― sleeve, Thursday, 2 July 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)
i will investigate volcano the bear. might have thought they were one of those twee indie animal acts.
i'm having so much fun listening to so much noise! haven't listened to so much of it in years. come to think of it, i've probably never listened to it as much as i am now. maybe i'll burn out on it, but it feels like there is so much good stuff out there right now. and so much under the radar experimental/sound stuff. maybe there always is. not noise and not on vinyl, but i can't get over how much fun that kommissar hjuler & mama bar comp i got is. so invigorating. and it definitely makes ME want to experiment and do crazy stuff. (i wish you guys could have heard the radio show me and maria did for awhile on the island. all cut-up sound stuff and some of it was actually really good too. i need to collaborate with my own mama bar more in the near future.)
anyway, vinyl-wise, i'm listening to the very noisy Embarker album on Malleable Records. (philly label that is awesome)

i am being outbid on a tower recordings record on ebay. i don't want to spend much more than i made dogsitting. a few hours to go...
― ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:43 (sixteen years ago)
i'm also gonna sell some books today. i know this is the vinyl thread and not the books about music thread, but at the bookstore near me they had a really cool looking book abt the AACM, so i might pick that up. that reminds me that i have a copy of the richard abrams "levels and degrees of light" lp at work that i need to bring home.
― ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:45 (sixteen years ago)
I picked up so many good records this weekend and it's got me really psyched (Savage Republic, Holger Czukay, Landscape, Beach Boys, Chameleons, Vanilla Fudge, and others I can't remember at work).
BUT...
I bought a used copy of Amon Duul II's "Yeti", in a plastic sleeve, taped up, with the 'ask clerk to see disc' sticker for $20, took it home, and it's just the standard reissue! Same thing with a similarly packaged copy of The Beach Boys' "Surf's Up" ($12)! I feel duped!Pretty sure both of those reissues new are pretty close to what they were charging used. Anyone have this happen? I really couldn't tell through all the plastic and tape that they were just reissues. buyer beware I guess?
This was at Amoeba SF by the way
― Chinavision (altair nouveau), Monday, 6 July 2009 16:45 (sixteen years ago)
oh I also sold a bunch of garbage at Amoeba Berkeley which always feels good
new Idea Fire Company lp on Ultra Eczema is fantastic.
― nerve_pylon, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ YES! great record.
― ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)
hey, ian, do you have the BEAR album on verve? artie traum's old band with eric kaz? got that this weekend. i might actually keep it instead of selling it. first side is pretty cool anyway.
― scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:51 (sixteen years ago)
no! i don't! is it weird jazz rock? i hear a few of his later records (all on Rounder I think??) that weren't so hot.
― ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)
got some good stuff to sell in the store. PRISTINE copy of young brigham by ramblin' jack. excellent oldtyme country record on REBEL records by curly ray cline. some other stuff.
― scott seward, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
man, i've definitely seen that record though, now that i google it. i wonder how i missed my man Artie. xp
― ian, Monday, 6 July 2009 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
REBEL RECORDS is/was run by David Freeman who also ran/runs County Records. Rebel put out those seldom scene records, which I like.
