second toughest does feel like a sequel to dubno, more refined, confident, exploratory, lighter on its feet in every way, but "juanita/kiteless" still feels like it comes from another world entirely

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 17:59 (six years ago)

like how did they make that

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 17:59 (six years ago)

i see you

maffew12, Monday, 11 May 2020 18:03 (six years ago)

q: is "juanita/kiteless" the greatest song ever recorded by anyone

a: no

(pvmic)

DJP, Monday, 11 May 2020 18:04 (six years ago)

you're still wrong but it's ok

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 18:07 (six years ago)

q: is "juanita/kiteless" the greatest song ever recorded by anyone

I can't help thinking that while listening to it, but it's currently my #3 of 77.

like how did they make that

One thing I'm noticing between these amazing STITI era tracks, namely Juanita / Kiteless, Cherry Pie, og Born Slippy, and NUXX, is just how good / interesting their drum processing was. Like that breakdown in J/K where it's all percussive... idk what's going on exactly, some 909 pitchshifting / delay cleverness or something, but it's so effective.

Brad can you please rank and compare Pearls Girl (Tin There) vs the six-minute Tin There from the Playstation version of Wipeout 2097, vs the five-minute Tin There from the Wipeout soundtrack CD

Elon's musk (sic), Monday, 11 May 2020 18:40 (six years ago)

the lean mean 5 minute oscillating wormhole that is the wipeout soundtrack version is prob my favorite but i also love the proggy excesses of pearls girl (tin there)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 19:26 (six years ago)

ty

All I got so far is that Change the Weather slays Underneath the Radar!

this is the only wrong opinion it is possible to have in this poll

I still believe those are the worst moments in their entire history, including the Freur wardrobe.

this one comes close though

Just absolute garbage aimed at morons who yearn for a return of the Skint label and a big beat revival.

🤩🤩

I think they realized that when it comes to pop culture and singles charts you don't really get a second go at it

they'd already had three goes tbf

Elon's musk (sic), Monday, 11 May 2020 19:31 (six years ago)

is the six minute "tin there" just an additional minute of the breakdown from the five-minute one? i've had trouble differentiating it lol

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 19:34 (six years ago)

yeah me too, I think it keeps the frenzied part up a bit longer and then goes to more of a long synth-pad-y outro than the 5-minute version's breakdown-and-fade. basically the short version sounds kind of like an arbitrary edit for time BUT somehow seems to work better! just trying to figure out if I'm missing something.

Elon's musk (sic), Monday, 11 May 2020 20:09 (six years ago)

5 minute edit is just bottled perfectly

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 20:12 (six years ago)

Been having some thoughts about A Hundred Days Off

* A friend said he thought they were finished when Emerson left, he seemed to think he was the one with the talent and the other two were cock rock bozos from the 80s, he was really fucking wrong about that eh?
* Two Months Off is the sweetest, most joyful thing of all time, and stands up easily alongside their darkest-sounding work, I love it as much for existing as I love it as a tune, which is a lot.
* I heard the LP in a guesthouse in Krakow, it was being played on the radio, then when I moved to Prague my housemate was a big fan, this was when I relly got into the band, so it's kind of my first Underworld LP in an odd way (though I was aware of Born Slippy, etc. of course)
* First five tracks are superb, then it runs out of steam a bit in the second half, however Trim has the lyric "Woman in a box with her head in her box / Speaks French when spoken like a tourist French / Hey classic coca-cola in a can when you want to cool down" so all is forgiven.
* Dinosaur Adventure 3D is such an odd choice for a single, not that it's bad really, but everything about it is textbook last-third-of-the-LP-semi-banger, even the title is like something filled out when they'd run out of actual titles to use.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 11 May 2020 20:17 (six years ago)

xp Moaner is also better in shorter edits, the extra bits at the end are nice but not really needed

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 11 May 2020 20:19 (six years ago)

when I was in Mexico I once heard Ballet Lane at a movie theater, it sounded awesome there

ADHO seemed to clearly be not as good as the first 3 albums but every time I hear it I marvel at how great the sound is.

main issues with it are A) "Twist" doesn't have the awesome guitar bit that the live version does and B) "Dinosaur Adventure 3D" is missing....something. I can't put my finger on what. Maybe the fact that it reuses the "Dark Train" hook gets me.

frogbs, Monday, 11 May 2020 20:51 (six years ago)

Dinosaur Adventure 3D also has two b-sides which are better.

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 11 May 2020 21:09 (six years ago)

looking forward to the extensive documentation of all the Drift alternate versions

here's one I prepared earlier

Happy Christmas from Underworld 🎅 • [video 2019] 0:26

when I was in Mexico I once heard Ballet Lane at a movie theater, it sounded awesome there

I heard the LP in a guesthouse in Krakow, it was being played on the radio

what the... Well now I can't not say that I caught "Two Months Off" coming out of a shop in Tokyo my first time there and danced a little bit. I'm pretty sure it was on the radio and not coming out of a record shop. I was young and full of sushi vinegar.

status: stoned and getting lost in "banstyle/sappys curry"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 23:53 (six years ago)

"banstyle" is like... weightless jazzy dnb that i'd like to hear way more of

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 11 May 2020 23:53 (six years ago)

It's underrated cuz of what it follows. I'm putting it high!

maffew12, Monday, 11 May 2020 23:56 (six years ago)

i took the dubno box set and mashed in all the stuff it's missing. I forgot how good "Minneapolis" is!

maffew12, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:04 (six years ago)

Ok, Oblivion with Bells is great. It will be hard to compare songs on that with songs I've loved for 20 years but it's definitely my favorite album they've done after the 90s

Vinnie, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:05 (six years ago)

I don’t know every single remix and B-Side and outtake to consider myself knowledgeable enough to vote in this poll (I know she’s a classic and all, but does the world really need FIVE official remixes of “Dinosaur Adventure 3D”?), but I’m super excited to see the results. I had no idea they put out so much music in the past ten years and looks like they’re still going amazingly strong 40 years into their career. That is super impressive.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:15 (six years ago)

Listen for a couple of weeks and vote!

Elon's musk (sic), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:18 (six years ago)

tfw "sappys curry" goes hard techno all of a sudden

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:19 (six years ago)

FIVE official remixes of “Dinosaur Adventure 3D”

there's no way i'm listening to any of these, and i like that song. Forget anything that is just gonna feel like homework to you and join in!

maffew12, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:22 (six years ago)

imo the only vital "remixes" are the Dark and Long ones (most of these aren't remixes and were labelled like they were for chart considerations?) and the ones for Cups.

maffew12, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:27 (six years ago)

and Jumbo Jedi Future Shock something something

maffew12, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:28 (six years ago)

i prefer "cherry pie" but when i'm listening to "rowla" and i start to feel like it's slowwwing... dowwwwn.... it's great

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:33 (six years ago)

q: is "pearl's girl" the greatest song ever recorded by anyone

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:37 (six years ago)

q: is "big mouth" the greatest harmonica song ever recorded by anyone?

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:47 (six years ago)

None of the remixes by outside artists are relevant to this poll anyway, so Dinosaur Adventure only had one remix

Elon's musk (sic), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:49 (six years ago)

second toughest was my favorite underworld record for a very long time and when i hear "air towel" i remember why

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:51 (six years ago)

after all this you're putting something above Second Toughest?

maffew12, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:53 (six years ago)

"stagger" too, jeez xp

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:57 (six years ago)

yeah oblivion with bells is my fave, i arrived at this opinion after a very long period of acceptance and deep reflection

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:57 (six years ago)

perhaps I've been naive to think Second Toughest could place first

maffew12, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 00:59 (six years ago)

it has a pretty solid chance imo

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:00 (six years ago)

"Holding the Moth" from OWB is the one that always surprises me with how good it is

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:01 (six years ago)

conversely dubno may (deservedly) be very difficult to dethrone xp

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:01 (six years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vewj8NR08nE

i'm not going to make youtube embedding a thing and it's not like you can vote for this specific version of "air towel" anyway but it is sooo awesome and i am having a great time listening to it right now

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:04 (six years ago)

the thing with dubnobass is I discovered it in high school (about a decade after its release) and it quickly became the most important album in the world to me. it also functions as a cross between electro, New Wave, and prog which happen to be my favorite genres

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:12 (six years ago)

"air towel" is one i've never gotten at all, that repetitive synth loop gets on my nerves without there being much else to hold my attention. that version brad linked is so much better i can't believe it

ufo, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:14 (six years ago)

the thing about second toughest for me is there's about an hour that's absolutely perfect and then there's "rowla" which is a little grating and far inferior to "cherry pie", and "air towel", so it's strange to listen to as a whole.

ufo, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:18 (six years ago)

sorry for liveblogging my way through the catalog by oh my fucking goddd "cups"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 01:31 (six years ago)

Pearl's Girl (Carp Dreams... Koi) • [1996 b-side] 10:09

yo wtf i've never heard this before

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 May 2020 02:01 (six years ago)

the thing with dubnobass is I discovered it in high school (about a decade after its release) and it quickly became the most important album in the world to me. it also functions as a cross between electro, New Wave, and prog which happen to be my favorite genres
it was my first too. I'm enjoying taking the time with some of the box materials I've never bothered with before (and that won't affect any of my ballot, probably, but when am I ever going to dive back in like this?). It is a great synthesis like that.

But then there's Second Toughest just being like... what Brad said... where did that come from?? For real. I'm not a huge techno guy. Anyone have any recommendations for fans of that album?

maffew12, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 02:19 (six years ago)

*listens to underworld all day* wow i really spent 24 hours with the king of snake
