it is a v good and also interesting choice. kinda realized how amazing it is while putting together my own list.

"Machine Gun" was my #1. The unhinged-ness of Hendrix's vocal is what puts it over the top for me - that, and the unbelievable guitar soloing, of course.

the noisy, ramshackle manic is my fav track from the debut, helps that it's relatively easy to hack the main part on the guitar!

xp it is ridiculously good. It is definitely my #1 on some days.

I know there was stuff like "Tomorrow Never Knows" and "Eight Miles High" out there already, but the opening of "Purple Haze" really feels like the "We're Not In Kansas Anymore..." of Psych.

Re: Purple Haze - to me the most sonically audacious of the big songs off the first album. So big and beefy. You would probably have gotten to metal anyways, but this song definitely pointed the way more than any other I can think of that music could be that heavy.

1983 was #3 on my ballot but on some days it could be #1. Electric Ladyland was the first Hendrix I head beyond the hits and I just wasn't expecting something like this at all.

1983 was my #13. i love it more in theory than in practice. loses the plot towards the end, imo; too much psychedelic horseshit (and i _like_ psychedelic horseshit). somewhere in my head there's a version of "1983" that's truly transcendent, "mysterium" in full rather than just an unfinished prelude.

Opening riff signals danger like the rattle from a snake. There is a reason it soundtracks every 1960s based movie. It IS the 1960s and it cannot be overplayed or fucked with.

And that solo. Every section of it could be expanded to 5 minutes, but it's so concise.

That placement surprises me. But that probably just shows how far apart my taste is from most Hendrix fans'. I've never liked that song.

it is the guitar that makes it enjoyable

it's a well-constructed and beautiful little ditty, too. hence all the covers.

Little Wing was my #5 and I knew it was going to be high on the ILX poll. Surprising to me is that is not a unique ILX take: it's Jimi's fourth most played song on Spotify, higher than Fire or Foxey Lady.

i should mention that i totally forgot until now about mr. mcfall's chamber's version of "little wing" from their "like the milk" album, which surely would have made my covers shortlist if i'd remembered. it's not on youtube, but it is exceeding fine.

stoked to see "1983" place so highly, that was my #2.

My #2. I just realized the San Diego 1969 version is the Hendrix In the West version, complete with crowd rushing the stage and Jimi begging the crowd to let them play.
