Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) is a good time to point out something that I noticed in listening to all this Hendrix for the poll: he has some of the best sequencing of his studio albums ever, especially EL. The way that HYEB(TEL) is such a soft, warm, welcome landing pad after the chaos of . . . And The Gods Made Love, then the blast of Crosstown Traffic. The whole album has amazing transitions.

Didn’t vote in this but if I had managed to put together a tracks ballot, one of the live versions of Red House would probably have been my #1. It made me completely re-think my perspective of the 12 bar blues.

Jeff W, Friday, 24 April 2020 21:07 (six years ago)

I voted for the Winterland “Wild Thing” because a buddy and I in hs made an air guitar video to it where I played Jimi and picked me up like Ozzy did Randy Rhoads and it ruled. We turned it in as a school assignment and the teacher thought it was gross. RIP

red house is mind-blowing and the one i regret most snubbing :(

My oldest sister bought The Ultimate Experience because of Wayne's World. Foxy Lady and Garth are inseparable in my mind, so I couldn't vote for it. But it's responsible for my first exposure to a small bit of the hendrix catalog.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 24 April 2020 21:51 (six years ago)

Wayne's World & something else I'll be posting soon basically introduced Hendrix to my generation.

Those Camaro commercials being the other thing I referred to upthread. Seem to recall them being a bit controversial at the time. The Bowling for Boomer Nostalgia Ball was fully rolling by then.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 24 April 2020 22:19 (six years ago)

May This Be Love was my #8. I had to have heard it before, but I most remember it being on the Soundtrack to the Movie "Singles".

I love those pastoral Hendrix numbers.

I voted for the one of the trio of hits off the first album that hasn't shown up yet. I expect it will be top 10 unless ILX is going to ILX.

Nice catalog when Foxy Lady doesn't even crack the top 20.

don't think I really understand how the sounds in May This Be Love were created. A very beautiful and surprising song on that album.

happy to see power of soul get votes. Kind of a rollercoaster of grooves and amazing, loud rips. Sooooul, soooul, sooooul.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 25 April 2020 01:46 (six years ago)

Xxxpost: iirc Jimi jokingly called Noel Redding "Bob Dylan's grandmother," maybe because he looked like an elderly Dylan.

Best use of the image yet. My first band (40 years ago now) used to do Fire and Foxy Lady, both which were dance floor fillers for awkward dancing college students.

loved this post.

and also your point about his asides in the monterey 'like a rolling stone'. his brain just spilling out. i don't think my #1 is going to make the list now, but i put it there because of the casual introduction if nothing else.

"Voodoo Chile" my #1. Winwood adds an enormous amt in terms of texture, another solo voice and call-and-response with Hendrix, and Casady is my favorite rock bassist, so this was an easy vote for me.

I appreciate Jimi's version of The Star-Spangled Banner, but I don't think of it as a song to put on and enjoy in the context of a normal music listening experience. But amazing on the album.

here's my number one. a collection of incredible moments, especially the false ending, leading into mitch's fill and the flanged-out final solo. the lyrical conceit makes me wish i had synesthesia.
