would rather just vote for the jimi hendrix songs i like; don't get why so many people like to make voting into a 4d chess game

xp Kate, love your write-up on Hey Baby.

Freedom was on my ballot early and maybe should have stayed. One of his most overtly political songs. Chorus seems to demand freedom from the racism/drug use etc. of the verses. Don't see a Republican connection.

xp yeah, i don't think jimi's intention is republican at all, though i'm sure it's been distorted and used that way. i regret posting the thought here now. but i do think about it every time i hear the song, and it contributes to why i don't enjoy it very much.

Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:01 (six years ago)

come on pt. 1 snuck into the 20th space on my ballot. it was duking it out with red house for the honor of being my favorite straightahead blues solo that jimi put to tape. it's all about that moment halfway through the solo where it shifts up in key and kicks into hyperdrive.

― Nudeln und Klopapier Gore (Sufjan Grafton)

hey, if you're cool with buddy that's ok! if you're being true to yourself you don't need to justify yourself to me or anyone else, either with 4d chess or bagging on "crosstown traffic" or anything else!

the academic paper on the star spangled banner/"this is america" (quick shout-out to donald glover, who probably wasn't making a deliberate reference) was really interesting and helped me understand more about just how many changes jimi went through in his career. in '66 he was a hawk on vietnam! hendrix by '70, when he was doing "freedom", was about as far from a republican as, say, "born in the usa" is, which is to say very far indeed.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 23 April 2020 20:21 (six years ago)

understood, kate. sorry to throw a tantrum and challop on "crosstown traffic" in response.

i LOVE "up from the skies"

was introduced as a young teen via mix CD from cooler older cousin. later on in high school i wrote an arrangement for small jazz combo + female vocalist and we ended up winning some kind of award at state or something ? i'm sure it wasn't actually very good, but hearing the song always makes me nostalgic for jazz band-related extracurriculars of yesteryear, weak coffee in styrofoam cups in makeshift dressing rooms in nursing homes etc

Was just listening to The Cry of Love and noticed that almost all of the first side charted today.

i've been delving deep into the weird bootlegs lately - recent listen is this comp put together by a head who goes by funkydrummer of acoustic and demo fragments from the first rays era. really enjoying this stuff, not at all "professional" or releasable but super fucking listenable

"Yes, I know I missed a verse, don't worry" - that was such an amazing moment to me when I was a kid. I had this cassette when I was 14, probably the first Hendrix thing I bought with my own money (as opposed to hearing my aunt's old LP of AYE).

There have been times when "Drifting" was my favourite Hendrix song. Definitely voted for that as well as "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" (I assume this is the same as "Come On pt 1?"), "Who Knows". "Freedom" and "Ezy Ryder" missed my ballot somehow but probably shouldn't have.

Feel a million filaments (Sund4r), Friday, 24 April 2020 17:24 (six years ago)

Same song. It's sometimes just referred to as "Pt. 1" because the original version by Earl King was an early "PT. 1/Pt. 2" single. Adding to the intrigue, sometimes the SRV cover was called "Come On Pt. 3".

power of soul (the real title, come on) is so freakin' good, and one of the songs that makes me angry that we couldn't see hendrix compete with the funkadelics of the world in the ensuing decade.

This an element of what I meant above about laid back Jimi being one of my favorite Jimi modes. Just that confidence in his timing to ad lib like this and have it not kill the flow of the song but actually toy with the flow of the song. *Swoon*

Fetch the Bolt Thrower (PBKR), Friday, 24 April 2020 18:41 (six years ago)

Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland) is a good time to point out something that I noticed in listening to all this Hendrix for the poll: he has some of the best sequencing of his studio albums ever, especially EL. The way that HYEB(TEL) is such a soft, warm, welcome landing pad after the chaos of . . . And The Gods Made Love, then the blast of Crosstown Traffic. The whole album has amazing transitions.

Didn’t vote in this but if I had managed to put together a tracks ballot, one of the live versions of Red House would probably have been my #1. It made me completely re-think my perspective of the 12 bar blues.

Jeff W, Friday, 24 April 2020 21:07 (six years ago)

I voted for the Winterland “Wild Thing” because a buddy and I in hs made an air guitar video to it where I played Jimi and picked me up like Ozzy did Randy Rhoads and it ruled. We turned it in as a school assignment and the teacher thought it was gross. RIP
