Did and maybe do still love these guys but after revisiting their old albums, have concluded that they have quite boring voices. In a way that's their legacy, making it ok to be a rapper with a boring voice.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 15:46 (five years ago)
They def had some late career highlights, grind date being the one yet sticks out, but I think what prince Paul did was balance out the boring voices with a lot of colourful distractions so you forgot that.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 15:47 (five years ago)
*the one that sticks out

You can see their post Paul career as a way of fully embracing the regular guy shtick their voices previously only suggested. Eg - trying people. The humour also became less zany and quirky and more regular. In fairness, the first serve album did try to address the decline in clever humour a little bit.

I need to check out their 2016 album. Totally passed me by.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 16:02 (five years ago)
"Trugoy, he just started going officially by the ludicrous alias "Dave" "
This was a tragic turning point. Though maybe influenced London rapper Dave.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 16:08 (five years ago)
candyman, I agree, they're not much in the way of stylists. No less great for it, mind.
― Daniel_Rf, Monday, 15 February 2021 17:03 (five years ago)
Someone once said that De La Soul were the first rappers whose beats were more important than their words and voices. Is this a controversial take?
― Halfway there but for you, Monday, 15 February 2021 17:15 (five years ago)
i regularly listen to and enjoy most of the music from hip hop group De La Soul
― That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 February 2021 17:18 (five years ago)
Classic

"Someone once said that De La Soul were the first rappers whose beats were more important than their words and voices. Is this a controversial take?"
That seems a bit off? But idk, I kinda lost some interest when they split from Paul. Stakes is high had some truly boring beats.
I think mc tee was the first though.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 18:23 (five years ago)
I mean, you could go back to Planet Rock
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 15 February 2021 18:45 (five years ago)
also I reject the entire premise of this revive except brimstead saying classic
absolute classic

this is like the hiphop fan version of "my best friend is black!!"
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Monday, 15 February 2021 18:48 (five years ago)
it could be, if i wasnt listening to a ton of other rap in the 90s, if rap wasnt the main genre i listened to. but then you would prob say thats like 'but my favourite genre is black!'
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:08 (five years ago)
actually no, i still dont get your analogy.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:11 (five years ago)
what? both of you stop
― (•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 15 February 2021 19:12 (five years ago)
i mean, stakes is high the title track had an amazing beat (also just the best song on there IIRC). the rest though, it was a bit weak.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:16 (five years ago)
the internet made a man out of pussies from around my way who usually wouldn't have a fucking thing to say.

The other reason this is wrong is that buhloone mind state is totally unlike the first two albums. It's much more sober, less chaotic, and has none of the earlier playfulness.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 19:56 (five years ago)
It’s also fantastic, as is The Grind Date

THERE IS NO R N B IN THIS SONG
― Ray Cooney as "Crotch" (stevie), Monday, 15 February 2021 20:09 (five years ago)
They should have just continued doing goofy, silly songs like “My Brother’s a Bashead” and “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa”
― Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Monday, 15 February 2021 20:15 (five years ago)
I can't decide between Buhloone and Art Official Intelligence: Bionix

I enjoy the 1993 album "Buhloone Mind State" from the all-time great rap band De La Soul.I also enjoy the 2001 album "Art Official Intelligence: Bionix" from the excellent rap band De La Soul. These album, along with most of their albums, are very good albums. Thanks for your time!

Yeah, Art Official Intelligence: Bionix was surprisingly good - Mosaic Thump didn't feel like much past a few good singles, so I wasn't sure if they had it in them to make an album like that. The first three, Stakes Is High and Bionix are all excellent-to-great.
― birdistheword, Monday, 15 February 2021 20:33 (five years ago)
i always forget how good Held Down ishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2ckWYPMqPc
― That's not really my scene (I'm 41) (forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 February 2021 20:40 (five years ago)
i thought mosaic thump was disappointing at the time. it's okay, i guess. bionix was a clear and obvious return to form.
even though it was an obvious attempt to get on the radio, i liked "shoomp" a lot:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9tEhwnr2qs
shame they didn't end up including it on the grind date. i thought it continued the feel good vibe of bionix perfectly.

"They should have just continued doing goofy, silly songs like “My Brother’s a Bashead” and “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa”"
The thing is, buhloone is musically much more of a cynical or at least deflated record than the earlier two, even DLSID. Doesnt take a PhD in hip hop to see that.
― candyman, Monday, 15 February 2021 21:11 (five years ago)
More than that though, I think its the album they really sounded like mature adults.

how does BM sound "cynical"?
― meticulously crafted, socially responsible, morally upsta (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 February 2021 22:08 (five years ago)
for real, that's legitimately ridiculous. it's not.
nothing de la ever did could be considered truly "cynical." not after de la soul is dead.
