Thanks for the list, Matthew. I've actually heard everything you mention at least once except for Untilted; it's more a question of not having digested the material (i.e., lukas's suggestion makes sense). Confield is actually the one I've heard the most; I got peak enjoyment out of it around listen five or six, and then some of it got annoying (again) without having also become entirely familiar, which is an unusual combination. I do want to spend more time with Exai, and I remember nothing about EP7 (the EPs box is a neat object but has the presumably deliberate effect of rendering the original releases less distinct. Just what do they mean when they say they've finished a new album—actually two? I can't wait to find out).
In part I went further in with Ae in '18 because Mark E. Smith died and The Fall's oeuvre had seemed similar in being enormous and esoteric when I got into them. But the way I "relate" to The Fall is more trad rock fan territory; Autechre really is a different kettle of fish.
xps Thanks, that playlist looks ambitious! (fellow Fall fan, no?)

I feel somewhere between excited and unprepared.
This is the best feeling though, no? A surprise AE album drop is the best album drop!
but if you played name-that-Ae with me I'd probably bomb.
Tbf with their track titles this happens to the best of us :) I think you'll feel way more at ease to stop trying to achieve full knowledge and just enjoy the ride. It's what their whole approach is aimed at.
Basically, whiney completely otm: There no rules to the Ae

chat updates:
Autechre :
pretty sure warp are going to want to do a physical release so the date = ?
but the stuff is done, by pure coincidence a few weeks ago, at the moment we're living with it and tidying up tiny things, but not touched it in 2 weeks so it's basically done
rob and i were both thinking of bringing it sooner but idk
need to talk to warp
was orig planned for late this year/early hext
also seven onesix recordings drop in less than a month

and now they're answering questions about their process
Time for some gamelan theory.

Seven onesix recording? Live recordings I guess
I tried buying the big dump of previous live recordings but the download failed. Got money back, but haven't tried again (also a bit miffed that there was no discount for the ones I already had)

I created a Spotify playlist of all the 2015 live sets and have had it on shuffle for most of the day. It might be the perfect post-COVID music, because I really can't think of any reason to leave home and stand in a pitch black room with other people to hear this stuff.

Just catching up to the news now... TWO new albums? Curious what will differentiate them to be separate in a stylistic sense rather than one epic compendium a la NTS. And to confirm, seven onesix project that's imminently dropping is a set of recorded jams?
Knowing this is all coming soon gives me some latent strength to handle the inevitable drudgery and economic challenges that will ensue this summer
― octobeard, Monday, 23 March 2020 22:17 (four years ago) link
OneSix was the name of the last tour, so it'll be live recordings of that. I lost my downloaded audience recordings of that tour so I'm warming up my wallet.

Lotta good shit, Sean's done swathes of metal, reggae, Detroit, abstract ... last night he went through a folder of working Ae jams and played a few seconds of each. Quite a few recognisable, many quite dull, the very coolest ones cut off almost immediately (presumably wants to keep them for future releases!).

Just listened to Helsinki. As I recall from when I saw them in London it's a very different mood from the 14/15 sets. Low energy, slow to develop, hard to love, except for a couple of short sections around 35 & 45 mins. Will try Melbourne now.

lovely downtempo ambient beat jam that has the synths at the end of maphive6.1 with some funky slow percussion and processed sounds reminiscent of a bit of the NTS sessions. really good

it's generative - been going for more than a week now. Someone at watmm pasted this bit of explanatory chat from Sean:
Broadcaster4utechre: all the synths are just playing whatevers in the frame at that pointBroadcaster4utechre: it scans the frame line by line top to bottomBroadcaster4utechre: r g b are 3 diff channels so i use all 3 but i put red stuff lower, green around the mid and blue for the cooler feeling higher stuff, idk i did it by tasteBroadcaster4utechre: and then combine the 3 and the output is the oscilattor outBroadcaster4utechre: the frame is actually 3 diff matrices overlaid if you like, r g and bBroadcaster4utechre: so i can use all 3 so i used a crossover to split them across the spectrumBroadcaster4utechre: 2 crossoversBroadcaster4utechre: so i put red stuff lower freq, green stuff is sort of melodic midrange, and blue is anything above thatBroadcaster4utechre: i did it to how the sort of warm/cool axis works around sounds in my head idkBroadcaster4utechre: yeah_: So, can you dial in colours, or are they chosen randomlyBroadcaster4utechre: its an algorithmBroadcaster4utechre: colour is p interesting it turns outBroadcaster4utechre: i like colour best of all the things i got into doing thisBroadcaster4utechre: the visuals are being controlled by certain events but its minimal interactionBroadcaster4utechre: mostly its about the image changing the sound_: I guess I’m curious how the visuals are informing the audio if the algorithm is taking the music into account. Is it a feedback loop?Broadcaster4utechre: its luminance across all 3 clour planes_: So i dont think s ean programmed key changesBroadcaster4utechre: yeah the key i just setBroadcaster4utechre: i can make it keep changing but u might feel sick after a bit...Broadcaster4utechre: all the oscillators in all the synths (incl drums) are reading the same wavetable are their respective frequenciesBroadcaster4utechre: it reads what's on the screen the same way a tv shows an imageBroadcaster4utechre: line by line, across and downBroadcaster4utechre: each full frame is one cycleBroadcaster4utechre: but as the oscillators are going at different rates sometimes the data in the wavetable changes before a cycle is completeBroadcaster4utechre: it interpolates pretty well though_: So the linear vector of RGB values is the wavetable? What triggers the envelopes?Broadcaster4utechre: am just using stock objects to do thisBroadcaster4utechre: all the sequencing etc is just existing stuff, as were the synths before i swapped in these oscillatorsBroadcaster4utechre: i mean the music is new but the patches used to sequence are existing_: ahhh yeh so there's still a sequence of on off in each synth yeh?Broadcaster4utechre: yeah the synths and drums etc are all doing what they would do anyway, just the wavetable in all the oscillators is changing
Broadcaster4utechre: it scans the frame line by line top to bottom
Broadcaster4utechre: r g b are 3 diff channels so i use all 3 but i put red stuff lower, green around the mid and blue for the cooler feeling higher stuff, idk i did it by taste

Broadcaster4utechre: i can make it keep changing but u might feel sick after a bit
...
Broadcaster4utechre: all the oscillators in all the synths (incl drums) are reading the same wavetable are their respective frequencies
Broadcaster4utechre: it reads what's on the screen the same way a tv shows an image
Broadcaster4utechre: line by line, across and down
Broadcaster4utechre: each full frame is one cycle
Broadcaster4utechre: but as the oscillators are going at different rates sometimes the data in the wavetable changes before a cycle is complete
Broadcaster4utechre: it interpolates pretty well though
