today i'm thinking "you know what, why _haven't_ i ever listened to the complete recordings of swamp dogg?"

we'll see how long that lasts. i have a tendency to be slightly overambitious in my music listening plans.

Aren’t we all.

I've hardly played any music at all the past two weeks. I took Automatic for the People with me my last trip into the city last week, and "Try Not to Breathe" sounded poignant and apropos. I spend more time watching DVDs and reading, though.

Honestly I haven’t been looking for funny or apposite choices (aphex “ventolin” would be one), I stuck on an official Spotify playlist titled “deep listening” that had a lot of faves - plight + premonition, cluster & eno, timeless (ecm not goldie) - plus a load of stuff I didn’t know but dug. It was absolutely the tonic

Today my connection started breaking up so I rebooted the firetv stick that I play music thru and played the first thing recommended by Spotify and it was Leonard Cohen, Everybody knows that the plague is coming/everybody knows it’s moving fast

Leiber and Stoller had left Atlantic Records to start their own record label, Red Bird. They had recorded a bunch of stuff but were running out of cash and needed to release something. They ran into George Goldner (at the Palm? Meeting with Hy Weiss?) who was once again down on his luck. Typically he would start a successful R&B or Latin label, then run up a gambling debt and have to sell it to Morris Levy. Jerry and Mike told him they would hire him on the spot, brought him back to their office, showed him the slush pile of recordings, left him the keys, went home to sleep, came back in the morning, to find him sitting there, still dapper, holding up the tape or acetate of The Dixie Cups version of "Chapel of Love," saying something like "On my very word" or however he would have said it. One of them, Jerry, no doubt, said "That PoS!?" but they put it out anyway and it was a hit and kept them alive for a while. They made Goldner a partner, and he eventually ended up selling out his interest as per usual, no to Morris Levy but to someone like him, so Jerry and Mike sold their interest as well, for a dollar I think.
