Rolling Worst Music of 2020

I spend some of my lunchtimes cleaning up acoustic (like pre-1925 pre-electric-mic) recordings and they have this narrow band of recorded sound, so you can cut off a lot of surface noise by fading down the high and low ends of the EQ. I could put that same filter over the Hide Your Mother track and it would still sound the same.

That just sounds to me like a variation on pretty much every popular rap single since 2010

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 20 April 2020 11:25 (six years ago)

i haven't heard them because i don't have the stomach, but i feel like psychedelic nazis Black Magick SS probably belong here

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 April 2020 12:49 (six years ago)

I don't believe for a moment this band has any ties to nsbm, it's merely this year's Uncle Acid + edgelordiness. Music for Discogs speculators. That said, undeniably catchy from the bits I just heard online, not even close to worst music of 2020 imo. Sounds a little like Ghost BC via Bone Awl

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 20 April 2020 15:24 (six years ago)

lol, ponzi this isn't a "defend the indefensible" thread but your eagerness to immediately cape for some nazi bullshit you had literally never heard of five minutes ago is duly noted

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 April 2020 16:07 (six years ago)

also, lol that you "don't believe they have any ties to nsbm", you know hitler was in a band before burzum, right?

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 20 April 2020 16:08 (six years ago)

I check out everything posted itt and your post's (understandable) lack of a link inspired me go listen. I was expecting terrible music but didn't hear any. It just sounds like boilerplate catchy / crusty bm to me, albeit boilerplate catchy / crusty bm with questionable sleeve art

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 20 April 2020 16:59 (six years ago)

a quick look into it reveals they've released stuff on multiple actual nsbm labels so lol at the idea that they have no ties to nazism and are just edgelords using nazi imagery (which would still be indefensible)

ufo, Monday, 20 April 2020 23:06 (six years ago)

For my own edification, which of these two labels has ties to usbm?

www.discogs.com/label/1335453-Creep-Purple

www.discogs.com/label/164278-Infinite-Wisdom-Productions

Because these are the only two labels who've released music by this band according to Discogs outside of obvious bootleg labels with this as their only release

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 20 April 2020 23:42 (six years ago)

obviously I meant nsbm

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 20 April 2020 23:42 (six years ago)

if you're willing to go look up their music to satisfy your curiosity, i'm sure you can just as easily look up their past affiliations with nazi record labels. i didn't post what i did to open up a discourse.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 21 April 2020 01:22 (six years ago)

uh idk i think that "reich of the black sun" cassette on infinite wisdom looks pretty iffy??

crüt, Tuesday, 21 April 2020 01:25 (six years ago)

oh damn black magick ss doesn't have nazi themes in their music.... yet has a big ol' "ss" in their band name.... which means they're fuckin nazis

https://www.discogs.com/Black-Magick-SS-Hidden-In-Plain-Sight-/master/978077

they've released vinyl on German nsbm label Darker Than Black and searching reveals a number of the bands on Infinite Wisdom are also nazis (Wolfblood, Baal Gadrial, Reich of the Black Sun). there's probably more but i'm too lazy to look further and it's pretty clear

I listened to a few tracks from that Danzig record, and it actually is kind of okay! but i also have a deep affection for Danzig's voice, and do impressions of him all the time lol.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:10 (five years ago)

I also want to say that David Guetta appropriating MLK Jr's "I Have A Dream" speech is about as horrifying and disgusting as the literal Nazi shit that was being talked about above it. Even if he was doing it for charity, it's completely despicable and without any redeeming qualities.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:12 (five years ago)

i think it's safe to say it is the worst readily available music of 2020 and there's real competition!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:18 (five years ago)

very much so. it also goes to show that Guetta doesn't know about the many excellent Detroit techno and Chicago house tracks made by Black people that sample the MLK speech quite effectively. either that or he doesn't care, and both cases are inexcusable.

Now Reese & Santonio? Play this at the next march, please.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:29 (five years ago)

at least it's a pretty concise and suitably grotesque encapsulation of the relationship between '''edm''' (aka dance music that white heterosexuals have learned is socially acceptable for them to enjoy) and blackness in general

honestly the industry would do well to move on from that especially unfortunate phase in the marketing of dance music with all due haste. luckily this should not be particularly difficult to do in the united states, since most '''edm''' now struggles tremendously in that market and the small number of success stories are in the 'future-nostalgia' mold which openly takes abundant cues from more inclusive eras in dance music's history. hopefully soon we will all stop being terrorized in restaurants by sedated deep house covers of iconic hits by black artists with whispered anonymous vocals

dyl, Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:33 (five years ago)

you speak as if restaurants will exist in a few years

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Sunday, 21 June 2020 17:43 (five years ago)

I confess to appropriating “edm” as a broad catchall to save myself from having to painstakingly apply increasingly detailed genre names in my iTunes library

I've only listened to Ep. 5, and while I detest the spoken intro and outro which I guess are, like, Gorillaz character development things (?!) which I care 0 about, I thought the song was fine, loved the bridge tbh. I appreciate that Damon has finally learned how to sing high without yelling

Is justin bieber thing to just repeat the title word as a chorus? I don’t really feel in the mood to relisten to his singles but iirc “baby”, “sorry”, “yummy” and now this one have a chorus where he just repeats 2 syllable words 10x times.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 26 September 2020 17:07 (five years ago)

Not really hating on those singles - althought yummy and holy are abysmal - but just noticed that thing. Just like Lady Gaga’s thing is to stutter in her choruses.
