oh wow "eugene"

the chorus is quietly devastating

not sure i would have posted it in this thread specifically but ty for sharing it

dyl, Wednesday, 19 February 2020 06:40 (six years ago)

no prob - yeah, it came up in an r&b playlist, but I wasn't really sure where to put it (I can post it in rolling pop, too...)

meanwhile - kaash has top-of-Pitchfork placement today :) https://pitchfork.com/levels/kaash-paige-heartbreaker-new-song-listen/

You have seen the heavy groups (morrisp), Wednesday, 19 February 2020 21:22 (six years ago)

ro james has put out a surprising number of good singles since his first album + "permission"

dyl, Friday, 13 March 2020 06:12 (six years ago)

don toliver so sick. his last album was amazing

||||||||, Friday, 13 March 2020 08:24 (six years ago)

Jhene Aiko's just scored her biggest opening week ever with the #2 debut of her new album on Billboard. She's sort of quietly been sneaking to new fan base highs. Of course some of us really appreciated TRIP, naming it one of the best albums of last decade

enjoying this. the way it suddenly transmogrifies into a delicate piano ballad at the end is so odd but kinda works?

dyl, Saturday, 28 March 2020 06:22 (six years ago)

just listened to Victoria Monet's lush jam posted upthread, six times in a row

her album's out too

||||||||, Saturday, 4 April 2020 09:33 (six years ago)

Yeah, it’s really good!

morrisp, Saturday, 4 April 2020 17:31 (six years ago)

that's a pretty nice song

dyl, Saturday, 4 April 2020 21:21 (six years ago)

don toliver album is so great, stretching out to more rarefied places but still got punchy hooks and that voice

ogmor, Monday, 6 April 2020 23:50 (six years ago)

cosign, one of my favourite albums of the year so far.

I don’t follow r&b close enough to know, but is this Young Thug-does-r&b style (reductive I’m sure, but I don’t know how else to describe it) unique to Toliver?

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Tuesday, 7 April 2020 08:55 (six years ago)

kiana ledé record is really good

megan thee macallan 18 year (||||||||), Wednesday, 8 April 2020 18:52 (six years ago)

i liked tink's new one but it's a little sad to me that she's not rapping at all anymore

here 1st (roxymuzak), Friday, 10 April 2020 00:12 (six years ago)

I don’t really think of don toliver as r&b any more than I would 03 greedo, shordie Shordie, rod wave, rylo Rodriguez, no cap, or even polo g at times ... tho obviously a very blurry line there

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 10 April 2020 10:19 (six years ago)

(With maybe rod wave leaning hard r&b and polo g being more obviously rap)

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 10 April 2020 10:20 (six years ago)

Less than young thug i think of 03 greedo meets Travis Scott in that style

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Friday, 10 April 2020 10:21 (six years ago)

Ah thanx deej, I could have suspected there would be much more in that r&b/rap interzone, but it’s another area where I’m not all that much at home. Will try out some of the artists you mentioned.

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Friday, 10 April 2020 20:29 (six years ago)

Really nice beat here (though I could do without hearing the phrase “morning wood” in a lyric...)

now i love her

knife sharpening tips (gaudio), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 15:49 (six years ago)

so much greatness. the songwritting obv and foremost; then the taut strings that crackle as glorious as those little psychedelic breezy effusing perfectely-timed underneath; her caressing phras-ing designing the whole thing to such an extent, that that second part of the song reveals itself

knife sharpening tips (gaudio), Wednesday, 22 April 2020 16:00 (six years ago)

the arrangement takes it to the next level for sure

dyl, Thursday, 23 April 2020 02:47 (six years ago)

i think "dive" is pretty solidly her best yet

ufo, Thursday, 23 April 2020 03:36 (six years ago)

it's a dope track

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 23 April 2020 18:48 (six years ago)

"lick the beach/fuck the shore" over the trillville bed squeak takes some serious chops to pull off but she's got it.

certainly not as unique or bold as her material from her commercial prime, but brandy's return is pretty solid imo. backing is fairly repetitive but that moment when the horns and percussion retreat for a few seconds hits the spot. chance's guest verse veers from eyebrow-raising to genuinely amusing

dyl, Monday, 4 May 2020 17:48 (six years ago)

i will take literally whatever Brandy i can get but that's fairly undistinguished

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 4 May 2020 21:59 (six years ago)

the chloe x halle single seems like an instant classic, the sort of thing that might've led off a "summer jams" thread in precedented times gone by!

I will have to listen to it more, but one thing’s for sure, the title track is a beauty.

New single “Forgive Me” is also good:

I don't know much about this artist, Alycia Bella (apparently she has surfaced in the past, under other names); but she has three lovely new singles out:

wet tip hen ax (egg drop mix) (morrisp), Saturday, 5 December 2020 21:14 (five years ago)

Just came across this – not really sure how to classify it... it has an “indie” quality, reminds me of something I can’t put my finger on... I think it’s a fascinating single:

Maeta - Teen Scene (feat. Buddy)

wet tip hen ax (egg drop mix) (morrisp), Sunday, 6 December 2020 07:41 (five years ago)

(I wasn’t familiar with the track’s producer, Kaytranda – he clearly has a rep)

he even has his own thread!

Juls - ' blessed' feat mira may and donne'o

think some will like this
📹

I think there’s actually a lot of r&b-leaning West African (afro)pop people here might like. I posted Tems upthread, but there’s the whole (mostly) Nigerian alté (for alternative) scene, with people like Odunsi (The Engine) and Cruel Santino (fka Santi), and the vibe on the current Wizkid album is extremely r&b-friendly as well: check “Sweet One”, the tracks with Ella Mai and Tems, and “True Love”, another Juls jam.
Producer Juls (who’s British-Ghanaian) himself is kind of a trailblazer for this kind of sound, on his own releases, but he also worked on GoldLink’s Diaspora album, for instance.

Anyway, I actually came here to big up the Amaarae’s The Angel You Don’t Know album. She’s Ghanaian American and her music is a hybrid of r&b, rap and (alté) afrobeats. The album is basically one long netfreax & chill - and in an unexpected plot twist was selected as Best New Music in Pitchfork last month.

The current video is for “Jump Ship” (with Kojey Radical and Cruel Santino), which leans more to the afro side:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-RCIu45VIc

Last year’s slinky “Like It” got some traction on ILM:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai0RgtrRGSY
(it’s not on the album and hasn’t been streamable for a long time now, presumably because of a sample clearing issue)

fat ass deep state operative (breastcrawl), Sunday, 6 December 2020 16:31 (five years ago)

love that Maeta track, thanks (best Kay production this year? maybe!!)

sean gramophone, Sunday, 6 December 2020 16:32 (five years ago)
