hmmmmmmmmm so many choices - i feel like im totally drained of thoughts about this album. i guess i would choose "right side of my brain" or maybe "love vs money" - "mr yeah" has crazy things going on and i always forget how amazing the outro is. "kelly's 12 play" is maybe lyrically the best song of dream's career. "fancy" is like a monument basically, and the transition to the rap verse is one of my favorite parts of the album. "put it down" and "sweat it out" are amazing - esp the way "sweat it out" starts so exultantly, but those are two songs where i look back on l/h and go "yeah 'falsetto' and 'purple kisses' and 'luv songs' are better" and the singles are great songs but probably my three least favorite songs on the album except for maybe "my love" but i played that one out. i don't think i loooove "take u home 2 my mama" texturally, it's kind of trebly and flat and though i certainly do love it as i do all songs on this album, i wouldn't consider it for the title of best song even despite HER TITTIES LIKE WOOOHOOOOOHH. "love vs money 2" is great in tandem with "love vs money" but i think the first song is better and could stand alone whereas "love vs money 2" is a great song that works best as a transition between "love vs money" and "fancy". i did not consider voting for "let me see the booty"

i will choose amongst "fancy"/"right side"/"mr yeah"/"kellys 12 play" and then regret my choice
― s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 07:27 (sixteen years ago)
For me it's "Fancy" or "Right Side" but I basically endorse Jordan's handwringing above.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 08:39 (sixteen years ago)
'fancy'. it's v much a default answer, much like 'deeper & deeper' is always my answer to "what's your favourite madonna song", b/c it could so easily be anything else at any given time, but there it is. it's the lynchpin of the album for sure.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 08:45 (sixteen years ago)
yeah basically agree w/ jordan as well -- thats absolutely the heart of the album

put it down or right side of the brain is my initial thought. take you home through fancy is almost too much of a suite for me to pick one. i did finally learn the other day that fancy is mindfuckingly amazing on headphones but (and i mean this in the best way possible) it's almost too much song. i think if i were to just put on one track from this album it would be right side.
― unlucky son (call all destroyer), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)
only joints i did not consider voting 4 were 'my love', '12-play, & 'booty'. think the best song is prob 'fancy' but i voted 'mr. yeah'

^def agree about "take you home" and "mr yeah" (the latter especially) being prime singles choices, though i do love "rockin that shit" and "my love" too. "sweat it out" might be a bit dense/layered for radio, and its tempo might not be ideal for summer jam candidacy
xp cutty holy shit i forgot "walkin on the moon" is a single :( not a bad song but it's got to be the worst on the album

"walking on the moon" i've decided isn't that bad but it's one of those weird songs where the verse and pre-chorus melodies are killer and then the chorus is just totally dead weight.
"sweat it out" would/could be the album's big quiet storm legacy song imo

oh i prob meant to post this somewhere but the-dream agrees with what rev said somewhere else about 'take u home 2 my mama' secretly being a country song.
'walkin on the moon' is a fine track, i really like that the first third of the album consists of exquisitely executed generic radio jams w/glittering star cameos, kanye and mariah just doing what they do - lays the groundwork nicely for the album's lurch into WHOA blowing my mind territory. i even love the first half of kanye's verse - "i swear god must've made lightning strike and bottled it up, it hit the red carpet and modelled it up" is so great. pity he totally undoes it all immediately with "after i pound you" ughhhhh.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 16:59 (sixteen years ago)

― s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)
as for "fancy", like everyone says it's such a great slow-burner of a song that it gets to the point where merely the addition of the drums ups the drama of the album immensely - also "fancy" is so integral because it really is like dream is building up this great love life of jet setting and fucking in gucci stores and then he totally tears it down with "right side of my brain" - the two songs are really important to each other. and then "mr yeah" is like "fuck it!! girls are awesome im the best at fucking!!!" and then "mr yeah" ends the album in his bedroom <3
aaaaanyway im gonna vote for "right side of my brain" for the build up in the last 40 seconds or so where the drums pick up
― s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)
i agree that he's a retard for not releasing "sweat it out" or "put it down" but idk about "mr yeah" - it's definitely a great summer pop song but i think it might remind too many people of "touch my body" to really be a huge success
― s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)
one of my favorite parts on the whole album is right at the beginning of "right side of my brain" when his voice is suuuuper autotuned and he goes "fell in love with a real heartbreaker/ and there's nothing i can dooo, to shake her" - part gets stuck in my head all the time
― s1ocked up, they won't let me out (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)
tbh this is why I don't really like the "tracks" thing and always make singles lists, for P&J or whatever -- a straight list of my favorite songs of the year would be so redundant with my albums list and would feature so many tracks by the same people over and over that I'd rather just stick to singles as a medium in and of itself.
― some dude, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 02:25 (sixteen years ago)
anyway i REALLY object to the idea that "Fancy" is universally agreed upon as the best song from this album, since again it didn't win this poll, and it's not even in the top half for me.

I get what you're saying, but don't tell me that Clear Channel isn't empowered by a lack of anti-monopoly laws, either. Government does have an effect, however subtle, on most every sector of business out there. Radio is no exception.

― plaxico (I know, right?), Monday, December 14, 2009 5:28 PM (2 hours ago)
not to pick on you here but, uh, since when are end-of-year tracks lists supposed to be representational of their albums?
― k3vin k., Tuesday, December 15, 2009 1:08 AM (5 hours ago)
nah, by representational I meant that, you know with pitchfork they want a list that shows off the full extent of their aesthetic, their ecectecism and weird wildcards that show how they can look outside their standard field of focus to find things that complement or offset their musical landscape
― plaxico (I know, right?), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 07:13 (sixteen years ago)
I suspect you're drawing a bit of a bow from pitchfork's historical love of remixes - but the thing with remixes is that, esp. for the period 2004-2006, when it came to dance music non-dance fans were much more likely to be into remixes of things than they were to be into original dance music tracks.
Pitchfork has never particularly celebrated R&B or hip hop non-singles in its end of year polls - non-single rap tracks that did well have almost always been radio hits at the very least.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 07:25 (sixteen years ago)
looking for 'fancy' would be like me expecting, i dunno, 'my shadow' to be gucci's token critic pick this year
tbh "my shadow" is definitely the standout gucci track of 09 for me, and of everything he released probably has the most critical catnip
for some reason i didn't realise we were talking about the pfork list last night, so all i have to say now is "fuck it, who cares".
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 07:44 (sixteen years ago)
non-single rap tracks that did well have almost always been radio hits at the very least.
that's not entirely true, as i alluded to before, stuff like "Georgia Bush" and random Clipse mixtape tracks weren't radio hits. but yeah generally those are the exceptions that prove the rule.
